그들이 어린 양에게 싸움을 걸 터인데, 어린 양이 그들을 이길 것이다. 그것은, 어린 양이 만주의 주요 만왕의 왕이기 때문이며, 어린 양과 함께 있는 사람들이, 부르심을 받고 택하심을 받은 신실한 사람들이기 때문이다.” (요한계시록 17:14)
요한의 환상은 "마지막에 누가 승리하고, 가장 강력해보이고 힘있어 보이는 자들의 마지막은 어떤 모양인지"를 이야기합니다. 고난과 심판은 모두가 경험하는것이고, 고난 당한자가 곧 심판을 통해 구원받을 것이라는 것이 요한이 박해받는 교회를 향한 권면입니다.
박해속에 교회는 나약해졌을 것입니다. 예수를 믿는 믿음이라는 신앙적인 고백은 보이지 않는 것을 행하는 것이니 나약할 수 있습니다. 구약에서도 이스라엘은 늘 눈에 보이고 손에 잡히는 것을 추구하며 우상을 섬기듯, 신약시대에 교회들은 예수 그리스도의 복음이라는 눈에 드러나지 않는 것을 믿으며 신앙을 지켜야했습니다.
초대교회의 신앙은 지금까지 종교적행위와는 다르게 성숙한 신앙의 수준이었습니다. 기도로 병이 낳고, 치유와 기적들이 예수님의 사역에서 드러나보이기는 했지만, 정작 예수님의 복음은 이런 기적은 사람들을 주목하게 하는 것이고 복음의 핵심은 말씀으로 믿음으로 완성되는 것에 대해서 가르치셨습니다.
이 수준높은, 아니 성숙한 신앙은 박해에서 힘없이 나약해질 수 있는데 생각보다 든든히 믿음을 지켰습니다. 여기에 요한은 좀더 명확한 믿음의 결론을 이야기하고 있습니다. 곧 심판의 날이 오면, 우리는 승리할 것이다.
막막함을 이겨내는 것은 그날이 오면 마침내 막막함은 사라지고 견디어낸 자들에게 주는 축복을 기대하는 것입니다. 교회가 박해의 날에 오히려 능력있었다는 말은 교회는 박해를 통해 믿음을 더 단단히 세웠다는 뜻입니다. 오히려 박해가 사라진 오늘날 교회는 예전에 비해 나약하다는 평을 받을 수 있습니다.
요한계시록은 이것을 명확하게 드러내보이고 있습니다. 믿음으로 든든히 세워진 교회는 믿음의 열매를 확인할 수 있다.

Revelation 17:14"They will wage war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings—and with him will be his called, chosen and faithful followers." (Revelation 17:14)
Reflection on John’s Vision
John's vision reveals "who will ultimately triumph in the end and what the fate of those who appear to be the most powerful and influential will be." Suffering and judgment are experiences everyone faces, but John assures the persecuted church that those who suffer will ultimately be saved through judgment.
During persecution, the church must have felt weakened. Faith, which is the confession of belief in Jesus, is often unseen and may appear fragile. Just as Israel in the Old Testament constantly pursued visible and tangible idols, the churches of the New Testament era had to preserve their faith in the unseen gospel of Jesus Christ.
The faith of the early church stood out as a mature level of belief, distinct from mere religious acts. Although prayer, healing, and miracles were evident in Jesus' ministry, the true essence of the gospel was not these miracles themselves. Rather, the miracles served to draw attention to the message, while the core of the gospel was completed through faith and the Word.
This mature level of faith could have been easily weakened under persecution, but surprisingly, the church stood firm. In this context, John provides an even clearer conclusion of faith: on the Day of Judgment, we will be victorious.
Overcoming despair involves expecting the blessings that await those who endure when the final day comes. The fact that the church remained strong during persecution signifies that the trials strengthened its faith. Ironically, in today's world, where persecution is absent, the church may seem weaker compared to the past.
The Book of Revelation clearly shows that a church firmly built on faith will bear the fruits of that faith.
