예수께서 말씀하셨다. “돌아가거라. 네 아들이 살 것이다.” 그는 예수께서 자기에게 하신 말씀을 믿고 떠나갔다.(요한복음 4:50)
어제, 오클랜드 캠퍼스에 관심이 있는 한 교회 목사님을 만났습니다. 한인2세들이 모이는 교회인데 400여명이 모여서 예배를 드리는, 교회건물없이 빌려서 두개의 캠퍼스에서 예배를 드리는 교회라고 합니다. 한인2세 400명도 놀라운데, 교회건물없이 빌려서 예배를 드린다는 것도 놀라웠습니다. 오린다캠퍼스를 둘러보면서 저희 교회학교 건물을 보고는 부러워합니다. 저희도 너무 감사하고 기쁜데 이렇게 새로운 공간에서 아이들이 뛰어놀수 있고, 예배할 수 있다는 것이 더욱 감사한 만남과 대화를 이어갔습니다. 서로의 사역에 대한 이야기를 하고는 헤어지고 다시 만나기로 했습니다.
공간이 주는 안정감이 개인적으로 크다고 생각합니다. 첫인상, 첫이미지 그런데 이번에 더 깨달은건 공간 안에 어떤 공동체가 활동하는가에 대한 인상이 더 클수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 아무리 좋은 건물에 생명력이 떨어지는 공동체가 있으면 그 이상 변화가 없을 것이고, 밝고 환하고 새로운 것을 위해 교우들이 노력하는 공동체는 찬란한 빛을 드러내는 공동체로 매력이 넘쳐날것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.
오늘 본문은 예수님이 병든 왕의 신하의 아들을 고치는 장면입니다. 다른 복음서에도 이와 비슷한 이야기가 나오는데, 병고침을 받은 대상이 중요한 것이 아니라, 간절한 부모의 호소에 예수님이 단지 "돌아가거라, 네 아들이 살것이다"라는 한마디를 던졌는데, "말씀을 믿고 떠나갔다"는 것에 우리들의 시선은 머물러야 합니다.
손을 대고, 소리를 지르고, 마치 특별한 형식이 있는듯 모양을 만들어 기적을 기대하는 경우는 많이 봤어도 단 한문장으로 병이 나을 것이라는 말씀에, 이 부모는 그저 순종합니다. "믿고 떠나갔다" 참 무모하기 짝이 없는 행위이지만, 요한복음은 "믿고 하는 행위"에 무게를 두고 전합니다.
또한, 본문은 마중을 나온 자녀를 보고 언제 병이 나았는지를 확인한후 온집안이 예수를 믿었다고 기록하고 있습니다. "믿고 떠나간 왕의 종"은 그 믿음이 단순히 그냥 믿는 것이 아니라, 확증을 위한 물음과 확인이 함께 이루어졌음을 보여줍니다. 믿는 것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라, 믿음으로 그 사실을 확인하기 위한 노력이 필요하다는 것입니다.
신앙이 단단해지고, 믿음이 성장하고, 어려움과 맞부딪쳤을때 주님과 힘있있게 그 길을 가는 방법은 믿음으로~! 그 길을 가는 방법인데, 그 길은 묻고 확인하고 믿음이라는 단순한 행위를 넘어서 노력과 헌신이 반드시 동행해야한다는 것을 잘 알려줍니다.
사람을 만나 위로 받고, 마음을 나누는 행위도 이와 같습니다. 나와 비슷한 사람이 있어서 위로가 되는 것이 아니라, 내가 이 마음을 편안하게 나눌수 있는 공동체가 있다는 안도감은 우리에게 매우 중요합니다. 믿음은 늘 이런 행위를 통해 든든해 집니다. 그러니 처음 시작은 "믿고" 그 다음에 삶을 나누고, 이야기를 하고, 확인을 위해 묻기도 하고 노력하는 행위를 통해 믿음은 더욱 단단해지는 것입니다.
요한은 오늘 이 이야기를 전하고 있습니다.

Yesterday, I met a pastor who is interested in the Oakland campus. His church, attended by second-generation Korean Americans, gathers around 400 members for worship. Despite not owning a church building, they rent spaces and hold services across two campuses. I was amazed—not only by the size of the congregation but also by their ability to thrive without a permanent space. As we toured the Orinda campus, the pastor admired our church's facilities for the children. We, too, are incredibly grateful that our children can play and worship in such a space, which made the conversation all the more joyful and meaningful. We shared stories about our ministries, parted ways, and agreed to meet again.
I personally believe that a space can provide a profound sense of stability. First impressions and the initial image matter, but I’ve come to realize that the impression of the community active within the space can be even more impactful. A vibrant and dedicated community will shine brightly, even in the simplest of settings, while a lifeless group will stagnate, no matter how beautiful their building may be.
Today's Scripture passage recounts Jesus healing the son of a royal official. A similar story appears in other Gospels, but the focus here isn’t just the healing itself. Rather, it’s on Jesus' simple command, “Go, your son will live,” and the official’s immediate response: he believed the word Jesus spoke and departed. Our attention should rest on this act of faith.
Many times, we expect miracles to happen with grand gestures—laying hands, shouting prayers, or following a particular formula. Yet, in this passage, the official simply obeys. “He believed and departed.” It may seem recklessly simple, but the Gospel of John emphasizes the weight of “believing and acting upon it.”
The story also notes that when the official later met his recovering son, he confirmed the timing of the healing. This led his entire household to believe in Jesus. His faith wasn’t blind; it included the process of asking, confirming, and arriving at a conviction. This teaches us that faith isn’t static. True faith involves effort—questioning, seeking confirmation, and acting upon belief.
Faith grows stronger as it matures, helping us face challenges and walk confidently with the Lord. However, this journey requires more than passive belief. It demands effort and dedication alongside faith.
This principle applies to human interactions as well. Comfort and connection aren’t found just by meeting similar people but through the assurance of a community where hearts can be shared openly. Such spaces of trust are essential. Faith, too, is fortified through these communal acts. It starts with believing, then grows as we share life, ask questions, and confirm through actions.
This is the message John shares in today’s passage.
