3예수의 형제들이 예수께 말하였다. “형님은 여기에서 떠나 유대로 가셔서, 거기에 있는 형님의 제자들도 형님이 하는 일을 보게 하십시오. 4알려지기를 바라면서 숨어서 일하는 사람은 없습니다. 형님이 이런 일을 하는 바에는, 자기를 세상에 드러내십시오.” 5(예수의 형제들까지도 예수를 믿지 않았기 때문이다.) (요한복음7:3-5)
캠퍼스 개강예배로 본격적인 캠퍼스 청년 사역이 시작되었습니다. 작년에 졸업생들이 많아서 한국으로 또는 다른 지역으로 많이들 떠났는데 올해에는 교환학생들이 많이 왔네요. 정성껏 마련한 음식(어제는 김숙경집사님이 준비해주셨어요)을 나누며 청년들이 이야기하는 것을 보면서 저들의 세상이 곧 오고 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 짧은 시간 철새도래지와 같은 열린교회에서 잘 추스리고 멀리 날아오르기를 간절히 바라는 마음으로 함께하고 왔어요.
3월수요일부터 수요모임을 오린다에서 가지려고 합니다. 오전 10시와 저녁 7시 두번에 걸친 모임을 준비하는데 이 모임을 통해 기대하는 것은 저희 교회사역이 확장 되기를 바라는 마음입니다.
예수님이 고향에 가셨는데 어릴적 부터 보던 자들이 쉽게 예수를 그리스도로 고백하지 못하고 있는 장면이 오늘 본문입니다. 예수의 형제들이 가장 못미더워 하는 모습이 오늘 읽은 본문의 내용입니다. 가장 가까운 것이 가장 소중한데 사실 살면서 가까이에 있는 것보다 무지개너머에 뭔가 더 좋은 것이 있을 것처럼 생각하는게 우리들의 현실입니다. 예수님도 고향에서는 인정을 받지 못했다는 것이 복음서에 기록될 것처럼 나사렛에서 무슨 선한것이 나올까? 라는 생각, 즉 자신이 살던 고향에서는 절대로 대단한 일이 일어나지 않을 것이라는 생각들이 가득했던것 같습니다.
우리도 스스로 한계를 정해놓고 사는 경우가 있습니다. 생각한 만큼 일이 진행된다고 하는데 가장 가깝고 익숙한 곳을 가장 냉정하게 보는 것이 우리들의 모습일 수 있습니다. 어쩌면 우리가 지금 함께하는 공동체를 가장 냉정한 시각으로 바라보고 있을지 모릅니다. 그런데 우리의 교회가 너머의 가능성을 현실로 세워가는 교회가 되기를 꿈꾸는 것을 주저하는 이유가 바로 이런 이유라면 우리는 예수도 고향에서 형제들에게 처음부터 인정받지 못했다는 것을 기억해야합니다.
우리는 뛰어난 또는 모두가 주목하는 교회공동체를 꿈꾸는 것이 아니라, 단지 우리의 생각의 틀에 갇혀있는 제한된 의식보다는 그 너머를 충분히 이뤄낼 수 있는 교회공동체라는 사실을 기억하시고 함께 동역했으면 좋겠습니다. 최고와 최상을 위한 노력이 아니라 우리스스로 가장 자랑할만한 교회공동체를 기대하는 것이 우리에게 필요합니다.

3 Jesus’ brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that Your disciples there may see the works You are doing. 4 No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since You are doing these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5 (For even His own brothers did not believe in Him.) (John 7:3–5)
The campus opening service marked the official start of the campus ministry. Many students graduated last year and moved back to Korea or other regions, but this year, we’ve welcomed many exchange students. Sharing the carefully prepared meal (yesterday, it was prepared by Deacon Kim Suk-Kyung) and watching the student engage in conversation made me realize their time is coming soon. I joined them with a heartfelt prayer, hoping that they would prepare themselves well at Yeolin Church, a place like a resting point for migratory birds, and soar to greater heights.
Starting in March, we plan to hold Wednesday gatherings at Orinda. There will be two sessions—one at 10 a.m. and another at 7 p.m. Through these gatherings, we hope to expand our church’s ministry and outreach.
Today’s scripture shows Jesus visiting His hometown, where those who had known Him since childhood found it difficult to acknowledge Him as the Christ. The passage reveals the disbelief of Jesus’ own brothers, who were the most doubtful of Him. The most precious things are often the closest to us, but we tend to think there’s something better beyond, like a treasure over the rainbow. This is the reality we live in. The fact that Jesus was not acknowledged in His hometown is recorded in the Gospels, reflecting the sentiment: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” It seemed the people believed that nothing remarkable could ever happen in their own town.
Similarly, we sometimes set limits on ourselves. There’s a saying that things happen as much as we believe they will. We often view the most familiar and closest things with the coldest perspective. Perhaps we are looking at our own community through such a critical lens. If this mindset holds us back from dreaming of a church that brings possibilities to reality, we should remember that even Jesus was not initially acknowledged by His brothers in His hometown.
Our goal is not to create an extraordinary or widely admired church community, but to recognize that we can achieve more than our limited mindset allows. Let us work together with this perspective in mind. It’s not about striving for perfection or the best, but rather about building a church community that we can take pride in and genuinely love.
