그러므로 예수께서 [그들에게] 말씀하셨다. “너희는, 인자가 높이 들려 올려질 때에야, ‘내가 곧 나’라는 것과, 또 내가 아무것도 내 마음대로 하지 아니하고 아버지께서 나에게 가르쳐 주신 대로 말한다는 것을 알게 될 것이다 (요한복음 8:28)
요한복음이 읽기에 난해한 이유가 예수님이 이야기하시는 방향에 함께 등장하는 자들은 엉뚱한 방향으로 예수님의 말씀을 이해하고 있다는 것을 보여주기 때문입니다. 아마 초대교회가 처음 교회가 세워지고 예수의 복음을 전하는데 사람들마다 오해가 있다보니 그런것 같습니다. 이런 오해는 자기가 이해한대로 이야기하는 것을 말하는 것인데, 생각해보면 신학이라는 학문이 꽤 오랫동안 이 오해를 바로 잡고 성경의 뜻과 의미를 잘 전달하기 위해 노력한 결과로 우리들은 이제 오해와 오독 없는 신앙생활을 할 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다.
지금도 비슷하게 이단이나 성경을 자기마음대로 해석하는 자들이 있는 것은 변함이 없지만, 분별할 수 있는 시선이 가진것에 대해서 우리는 감사해야합니다. 신학이 어려워 어떻게 분별할지에 대해서 궁금하시면 이런 자와 교회들을 조심해야합니다. 첫번째 "성경지식은 자기, 또는 자기 교회만 정확하게 알고 있다고 이야기하는자들(다른 교회는 문제가있다고 이야기하는 자들) 두번째, 공동체생활을 너무 강조하는 자들 1년 365일 교회생활을 강요하거나 지나친 희생으로 직장을 포기해야한다고 이야기하는 자들 세번째는 세상은 악하니 교회안에서 기도만 해야한다고 주장하는 자들, 이런 행위들의 가장 큰 문제는 자기가 이해한것이 진리인것처럼, 지금까지 공교회가 함께 논의하고 방향을 잡고, 신학적인 작업들을 무시하고, 개신교 이전에 모든 역사를 부정해야 순수한 신앙을 가진것처럼 주장하는데 이런 행위의 문제는 교회 전통에 대한 이해가 부족해서 결국 자기가 아는것만 진리인양 이야기하는 것이 문제라는 것입니다.
초대교회에도 예수님에 대한 오해가 많았던것 같습니다. 요한복음 기자는 이런 오해가 곧 예수가 누구인가?에 대해서 각자가 이야기하는 것이 있는데 그것은 예수님이 가르친 방향과 맞지 않다고 이야기합니다. 마치 평행선을 달리듯 달을 가리키는데 달은 안보고 손가락만 보고 있는 격이라는 뜻이겠죠.
초대교회도 이해하기 힘든 것은 지금 우리들이 완벽하게 이해한다는 것은 어쩌면 교만일 수 있습니다. 한가지 잊지 말아야 하는 것은 우리들이 함께 섬기는 교회는 성경, 이성, 전통, 경험을 통해 든든히 세워졌다는 것을 기억하시고, 어느것 하나 가볍게 여기면 안된다는 것을 기억해야합니다.

Understanding the Gospel of John
One of the reasons the Gospel of John is difficult to read is that those who interact with Jesus often misunderstand His words, interpreting them in a completely different way. This likely reflects the early church's experience—when the gospel was first being proclaimed, misunderstandings about Jesus were common.
Such misunderstandings arise when people explain things based on their own interpretations rather than the true intent of the message. In many ways, the field of theology has spent centuries correcting these misunderstandings, working to convey the true meaning of Scripture. As a result, we are now able to live out our faith with much clearer understanding, free from misinterpretation.
Even today, there are still cults and individuals who distort Scripture for their own purposes. However, we should be grateful that we have the tools to discern these distortions. If you ever find theology challenging and are unsure how to discern false teachings, be cautious of the following:
Those who claim that only they or their church alone possess the correct understanding of Scripture while insisting that other churches are flawed.
Those who overly emphasize communal life—forcing members to spend all 365 days of the year in church activities or pressuring them to make extreme sacrifices, such as quitting their jobs.
Those who teach that the world is entirely evil and that believers should do nothing but pray within the church without engaging in society.
The biggest problem with these approaches is that they treat their own interpretations as absolute truth while rejecting the collective theological efforts and historical traditions of the church. They act as if faith was only pure before the Protestant Reformation, disregarding the valuable insights of church history. Such perspectives often arise from a lack of understanding of church tradition, leading people to believe that their limited knowledge is the ultimate truth.
Misunderstanding Jesus in the Early Church
The early church also struggled with misunderstandings about Jesus. The writer of John’s Gospel highlights how people had different ideas about who Jesus was, yet many of these ideas did not align with His teachings. It’s as if Jesus was pointing to the moon, but people were only looking at His finger rather than the moon itself.
Even if the early church found it difficult to understand Jesus fully, it would be arrogant for us to assume that we have everything perfectly figured out today. What we must remember is that the church is built upon Scripture, reason, tradition, and experience. None of these should be taken lightly, as all are essential in shaping our faith.
Reflection
As spring approaches, we find ourselves debating whether to dress lightly or warmly. In the same way, we must carefully consider how we approach our faith.
