오늘 본문은 은사 이야기이고, 성령강림절에 나누었던 본문입니다. 은사에 대해 그리고 방언에 대해, 성령충만에 대해 바울이 주는 탁월한 가르침은 지금 우리들이 알고 있는 은사와 성령, 방언과는 다른 이야기입니다.

바울이 은사를 이야기하면서 하나 됨을 이야기합니다. 은사는 여러 가지이지만 성령은 같은 성령이고, 섬김은 여러 가지이지만 주님은 같은 주님이고, 활동은 여러 가지이지만 하나님은 같은 하나님이라고 합니다. 세 번 반복됩니다. 다름을 말하는 것 같은데, 결국 같음을 말하고 있습니다.

교회 안에 사람이 모이면 다름이 보입니다. 어떤 사람은 말을 잘하고, 어떤 사람은 뒤에서 조용히 일합니다. 어떤 사람은 기도가 뜨겁고, 어떤 사람은 성경 지식이 깊습니다. 이 다름이 때로는 갈등의 씨앗이 됩니다. 내 방식이 옳고, 저 사람 방식은 좀 부족한 것 같다는 생각. 고린도 교회가 딱 그랬습니다. 은사를 가지고 서열을 매기고, 줄을 세웠습니다. 그래서 바울이 이 편지를 쓴 것입니다.

7절은 우리들이 결정적으로 은사와 방언, 성령충만의 방향이 어디로 향하는 지를 잘 보여줍니다. "각 사람에게 성령을 나타내 주시는 것은 공동 이익을 위한 것입니다." 공동의 이익. 즉 은사가 나를 위한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 나를 드러내기 위한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 공동체를 위한 것입니다. 이 말을 뒤집으면, 내 은사가 공동체를 향하지 않고 있다면 그것은 은사를 잘못 사용하고 있다는 것입니다.

그 다음에 바울이 여러 가지 은사를 나열합니다. 지혜의 말씀, 지식의 말씀, 믿음, 병 고침, 기적을 행하는 능력, 예언, 영을 분별하는 능력, 방언, 방언 통역. 읽다 보면 나는 뭔가 싶어집니다. 이 목록 어디에도 내가 없는 것 같은 느낌. 그런데 바울이 말하는 것은 이 목록이 전부가 아니라는 것입니다. 이것은 예시입니다. 성령이 원하시는 대로 각 사람에게 나누어 주신다고 합니다. 각 사람에게. 빠진 사람이 없습니다.

13절에서 바울이 이 모든 것을 하나로 묶습니다. "우리는 유대 사람이든지 그리스 사람이든지, 종이든지 자유인이든지, 모두 한 성령으로 세례를 받아서 한 몸이 되었고, 또 모두 한 성령을 마시게 되었습니다." 출신이 다르고, 신분이 다르고, 살아온 배경이 달라도 한 성령으로 세례를 받았다는 것입니다. 그 하나 됨이 다름보다 먼저라는 것입니다.

요즘 교회 안에서도 세대가 다르고, 문화가 다르고, 생각하는 방식이 다른 사람들이 함께 앉아 있습니다. 그 다름이 때로는 불편합니다. 그런데 오늘 본문이 말하는 것은 그 다름이 문제가 아니라는 것입니다. 다름에도 불구하고 하나인 것이 아니라, 다름 안에서 같은 성령으로 연결되어 있다는 것입니다. 은사의 다양성은 공동체를 약하게 하는 것이 아니라, 오히려 공동체를 더 풍성하게 하는 것입니다.

내게 주어진 은사가 무엇인지 모르겠다는 분이 있을 것입니다. 찾아야 할 것 같은데 찾아지지 않는 것 같은 느낌. 그런데 바울의 말을 잘 들으면, 은사를 찾는 것보다 공동체를 향하는 것이 먼저인 것 같습니다. 공동체를 향해 마음이 열릴 때, 내게 맡겨진 것이 무엇인지 보이기 시작하는 것 같습니다.

예수 동행세미나를 잘 마쳤습니다. 10년전보다 확실히 고민을 많이하며 체계가 잘 잡힌것 같습니다. 영성일기라는 용어는 일기는 누군가에게 공개하는것이 아닌데?라는 생각때문에 어플리케이션으로 나누는 것은 쉽지 않겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 그래서 어플리케이션과 영성일기노트 두개를 사용해보려고 합니다.

우리들이 교회안에서 기대하는 것, 성령충만이나, 여러가지 은사나 이 모든 것은 그리스도의 몸된 교회를 위해 사용되는 것이고, 예수님과 동행한다는 의미는 내 생각대로 삶을 살아가는 것이 아니라, 하나님이 이끄시는대로 삶을 정하는 훈련을 하는 것이라는 생각이 들었습니다.

최선을 다해, 영성일기를 쓰도록 권면하고 저도 실천해서 주님과 든든한 동행을 고백하는 시간을 나누고 싶습니다.

은사는 나를 드러내기 위한 것이 아니라, 공동체를 풍성하게 하기 위한 것입니다.

Today's passage is about spiritual gifts — the same text we shared on Pentecost Sunday. Paul's teaching here on gifts, tongues, and being filled with the Spirit is actually quite different from how we tend to think about these things today.

As Paul talks about gifts, what he emphasizes first is not diversity — it is unity. Different gifts, but the same Spirit. Different kinds of service, but the same Lord. Different kinds of working, but the same God. It is said three times. It sounds like a passage about difference, but what it keeps landing on is sameness.

When people gather in a church, differences become visible. Some are gifted speakers; others work quietly in the background. Some pray with intensity; others have deep knowledge of Scripture. These differences can sometimes become seeds of conflict — the feeling that my way is right and that person's way falls a little short. The church in Corinth was exactly like that. They ranked and sorted people by their gifts. That is precisely why Paul wrote this letter.

Verse 7 shows us clearly which direction gifts, tongues, and Spirit-fullness are meant to point. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. The common good. The gift is not for the one who receives it. It is not for self-display. It is for the community. Turned the other way around: if my gift is not being directed toward the community, I am not using it well.

Paul then lists the gifts: wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. Reading through it, you might wonder where you fit. The feeling that you don't appear anywhere on this list. But Paul is not presenting an exhaustive inventory — this is a sampling. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. To each one. No one is left out.

In verse 13, Paul draws everything together. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body — whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free — and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Different backgrounds, different social standings, different life stories — and yet one baptism, one Spirit. That unity comes before the differences.

In our church today, different generations sit side by side, different cultures, different ways of thinking. That difference is sometimes uncomfortable. But what today's passage says is that the difference is not the problem. It is not that we are one in spite of our differences — it is that within our differences, we are connected by the same Spirit. The diversity of gifts does not weaken the community. It makes it richer.

We just finished the Walking with Jesus Seminar. It felt noticeably more thoughtful and well-structured than it was ten years ago. One thing I found myself reflecting on: the term "spiritual journal" — a journal is usually something personal, not shared with others, which makes the idea of sharing through an app feel a little complicated. So I'm thinking of using both the app and a physical spiritual journal notebook alongside each other.

Everything we hope for in the church — being filled with the Spirit, receiving gifts, all of it — is meant to be used for the body of Christ. And walking with Jesus doesn't mean living however we want. It means training ourselves to let God set the direction. That is what I came away thinking.

I want to encourage everyone to write their spiritual journals faithfully — and I plan to practice what I preach, and share from that journey as a testimony of walking closely with the Lord.

Gifts are not for putting ourselves on display — they are for making the community richer.
