"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power." (1 Corinthians 4:20)

Yesterday, members came to the church for Scripture copying. There is a growing momentum to it now — and with that, a growing sense of accomplishment, one page at a time. The idea behind the project is this: different people, different handwriting, all working through the whole Bible together. When it's finally complete, those different hands woven into a single manuscript will mean something in itself.

It will take a long time. There will be stretches where it feels like the process is just holding us in place. But through consistency and cooperation, the day will come when the entire Bible has been written out. That is something like the magic of time.

Children growing into young adults is the same kind of thing. The ones who needed help with every bite of food, every moment of play — suddenly they are making their own choices, following their friends, charting their own direction. And that rapid growing-up sometimes comes out in a raised voice, a mix of pride and loss. This is how time works: through effort and shared investment, things fill in gradually, people grow, and what once seemed impossibly far away quietly becomes complete.

Walking down a street you haven't walked in a while, or getting on a bus you haven't taken in years — things you stopped noticing start to catch your eye again. Life feels like it's moving slowly, like you can see every detail. And then: when did all of this happen? The lament of someone who couldn't hold onto the time. Which probably just means life is still busy catching up with itself.

Reading Paul's letters lately, one question keeps coming back to me: why does something written to the early church still land as a necessary word for the church today? If the teaching had actually taken root, these letters would eventually become unnecessary. But they haven't become unnecessary. The words haven't yet been absorbed into the way we live. That says something.

Paul's challenge — that faith must be lived, not just spoken — keeps arriving with weight because it is both basic and difficult, universal and obvious. Talking is easy. Acting is not. That gap is built into the structure of human life. And faith lives in that same structure. Which means we are all, in some fundamental way, people engaged in a continuous face-to-face with ourselves, trying to live out what we say we believe. Given that, it makes sense that no stretch of time ever feels fully satisfying — and that the time already gone gets held onto in regret and frustration.

What Paul is actually after is not dazzling skill or miraculous spectacle. It is the daily, concrete reality of walking with God — and faith that shows up in actual life. The desire for recognition and influence may shift behavior for a while, but it doesn't change a person at the root. That five-percent gap God seems to have left in us — maybe the answer isn't to fill it with recognition and display. Maybe it's to fill it with a faith that visibly changes the way we live.

None of this is easy.

Reflection

What does faith expressed through life actually look like? I don't think it's just showing up to worship consistently — though that matters too.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. Reina and Yiru are preparing for children's ministry every week and showing up for the kids. When they share their experiences, it usually ends in laughter — because it's genuinely hard. And yet they keep giving their best. Please pray for them and hold them up in intercession.

  2. The young adult ministry is in a bit of a summer lull. When the semester starts, students won't automatically come back on their own — and honestly, I'm not quite sure yet how to prepare for that transition. We're short on people, and the planning keeps getting pushed aside by other things pressing in. What we need isn't more hands — it's vision and direction. Please pray.
