1 John 4:1–6, Tuesday, June 30. 요한일서 4:1-6, 6월30일 화요일

요한이 경고로 시작합니다. "사랑하는 여러분, 어느 영이든지 다 믿지 말고, 그 영들이 하나님에게서 났는가를 시험하여 보십시오." 처음 듣기에 좀 의외입니다. 신앙생활을 하다 보면 영적인 것이라면 무조건 좋은 것이라고 생각하기 쉽습니다. 은혜로운 것 같고, 신비로운 것 같고, 영적인 분위기가 나면 그것이 하나님께로부터 온 것이라고 생각하는 것. 그런데 요한은 그렇게 단순하지 않다고 말합니다. "거짓 예언자가 세상에 많이 나타났기 때문입니다." 시험하라는 이유가 분명합니다. 거짓이 섞여 있다는 것입니다.

당시 교회 안에 거짓 예언자들이 많이 나타났습니다. 그들도 영적인 언어를 사용했을 것입니다. 그럴듯한 말로, 신비로운 분위기로 사람들을 흔들었을 것입니다. 그래서 요한이 분별의 기준을 줍니다. 2절입니다. "여러분은 하나님의 영을 이것으로 알 수 있습니다. 곧 예수 그리스도께서 육신을 입고 오셨음을 시인하는 영은 다 하나님에게서 난 영입니다." 시험의 기준이 예수님입니다. 예수 그리스도가 육신으로 오셨다는 것을 시인하는지. 이것이 분별의 출발점입니다.

이게 왜 중요했을까 생각해보았습니다. 당시 영지주의 같은 사상들은 영은 거룩하고 육신은 더럽다고 가르쳤습니다. 그래서 예수님이 진짜 사람의 몸을 입으셨다는 것을 부정하는 가르침이 많았습니다. 3절은 이것을 정확히 짚습니다. "그러나 예수를 시인하지 않는 영은 다 하나님에게서 나지 않은 영입니다. 그것은 그리스도의 적대자의 영입니다." 예수님이 진짜 육신을 입으셨다는 것, 진짜 배고프시고 진짜 피곤하시고 진짜 고통당하셨다는 것. 그것을 부정하면 십자가도, 부활도 의미가 없어집니다. 영적인 것처럼 들려도, 예수님의 인성을 부정하는 것은 진리가 아니라는 것입니다.

요즘도 비슷한 일이 있습니다. 영적인 것처럼 보이는데 핵심에서 벗어난 것들. 은혜로운 것 같은데 사람을 묶어두는 것들. 신비로운 것 같은데 결국 사람을 두렵게 만드는 것들. 분별이 필요한 이유입니다.

4절에서 요한이 위로합니다. "자녀 된 이 여러분, 여러분은 하나님에게서 난 사람들이며, 여러분은 그 거짓 예언자들을 이겼습니다. 여러분 안에 계신 분이 세상에 있는 자보다 크시기 때문입니다." 분별이 우리 능력에 달려있는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 우리 안에 계신 분이 더 크시기 때문이라는 것입니다. 우리가 똑똑해서 거짓을 가려내는 것이 아니라, 성령이 우리 안에 계시기 때문에 가능하다는 것입니다.

5절과 6절에서 요한이 두 종류의 사람을 대조합니다. "그들은 세상에서 났습니다. 그런 까닭에 그들은 세상에 속한 것을 말하고, 세상은 그들의 말을 듣습니다." 그리고 "우리는 하나님에게서 났습니다. 하나님을 아는 사람은 우리의 말을 듣고, 하나님에게서 나지 아니한 사람은 우리의 말을 듣지 아니합니다." 마지막 문장이 결론입니다. "이것으로 우리는 진리의 영과 미혹의 영을 알아봅니다." 분별은 한 번의 판단이 아니라, 누구의 말에 귀를 기울이고 있는지를 계속 살피는 삶의 태도라는 것입니다.

이 말씀이 묻습니다. 나는 무엇을 기준으로 영적인 것을 분별하고 있는가. 그럴듯하게 보이면 다 받아들이고 있는 것은 아닌가. 분별의 기준이 예수 그리스도인지, 아니면 그저 느낌인지.

신앙생활에서 분별은 의심이 아닙니다. 사랑하기 때문에 분별하는 것입니다. 잘못된 것에 흔들리지 않기 위해서, 진짜를 붙들기 위해서 분별합니다.

연회를 잘 마지치고 돌아왔습니다. 박병준 권사가 연회 목회자들의 프로필 사진을 찍느라고 끝까지 남아있었고, 한인 목회자가 50명(은퇴자 빼고)으로 늘었습니다. 처음 코커스가 고민하고 계획한대로, 평신도 대의원 1분과, 목회자 대의원2명(한분은 리저브입니다)을 선출했습니다.

교회에 이런 대의원이 왜 필요할까? 생각할 수 있겠지만, 대의원정치는 미국이 가진 가장 민주적인 특징입니다. 여기서 한발짝 더 나아가면 이런 노력은 결국 교단과 연회를 우리들이 기대하는 건강하고 하나님이 이끄시는 그 자리로 갈 수 있도록 노력하는 마음이 더 담아질 수 있습니다.

거짓에 마음을 빼앗겨 중요한것을 잊어버리는 많은 사람들에게, 진정한 하나님이 이끄시는 방향을 한인 대의원들이 잘 이끌어갔으면 좋겠습니다.

영적인 것이라고 다 좋은 것이 아닙니다. 예수 그리스도가 분별의 기준입니다.

John opens with a warning. Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God. It's a strange thing to hear at first. In the life of faith, it's easy to assume that anything spiritual must automatically be good — anything that feels gracious, mysterious, or charged with a spiritual atmosphere gets assumed to come from God. But John says it's not that simple. For many false prophets have gone out into the world. The reason for testing is clear. There is falsehood mixed in.

False prophets had already begun appearing in the church at that time. They likely used spiritual language too — compelling words, a mystical atmosphere, enough to sway people. So John gives a standard for discernment. Verse 2: This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. The test is Jesus himself. Does this spirit confess that Christ came in the flesh? That is where discernment begins.

I found myself thinking about why this mattered so much. Movements like Gnosticism at the time taught that spirit was holy and flesh was corrupt. So a great deal of teaching denied that Jesus had truly taken on a human body. Verse 3 names this precisely. But every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist. That Jesus truly had a body, truly hungered, truly grew tired, truly suffered — deny that, and the cross and the resurrection lose their meaning. Something can sound spiritual and still not be true, if it denies the humanity of Jesus.

Something similar still happens today. Things that look spiritual but have drifted from the center. Things that feel gracious but end up binding people. Things that seem mystical but ultimately produce fear. This is exactly why discernment is necessary.

In verse 4, John offers comfort. You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. Discernment doesn't rest on our own ability. It rests on the fact that the One inside us is greater. We don't sort out truth from falsehood because we're clever — it's possible because the Spirit lives within us.

In verses 5 and 6, John contrasts two kinds of people. They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them. And: We are from God, and whoever knows God listens to us; but whoever is not from God does not listen to us. The final line is the conclusion: This is how we recognize the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood. Discernment is not a one-time verdict — it is an ongoing posture, a continuous attentiveness to whose voice we are actually listening to.

This passage asks a question. What standard am I using to discern spiritual things? Am I accepting anything that sounds convincing? Is my standard Jesus Christ, or just a feeling?

Discernment in faith is not suspicion. We discern because we love — to keep from being shaken by what is false, and to hold onto what is real.

We just returned from a good Annual Conference. Byungjun Park stayed until the very end taking profile photos of all the clergy. Korean-American clergy in the conference have now grown to 50 (not counting retirees). As the caucus had hoped and planned from the start, we elected one lay delegate and two clergy delegates (one as reserve).

You might wonder why a church needs delegates like this. But the delegate system is one of the most democratic features of how things work in America. Taking it a step further, this kind of effort carries our hope of guiding the denomination and the Annual Conference toward the healthy, God-led place we long for it to be. In a time when so many people lose sight of what matters because their hearts are captured by something false, I hope our Korean delegates can help steer things toward the direction God is truly leading.

Reflection

Not everything that looks spiritual is good. Jesus Christ is the standard for discernment.
