"Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God's slaves." (1 Peter 2:16)
Honestly, today's passage made me uncomfortable. Submit yourselves to every human institution. In a time like this, bringing up those words is a good way to be misunderstood. Some will say, "See — it means just go along with everything." Others will say, "The Bible says to obey, so why are you questioning anything?" When the same passage sends people running in completely opposite directions, I start to think the problem isn't that Scripture is hard to understand — it's that we tend to read what we already want to find.
When Peter wrote this letter, the Roman emperor was Nero. The very man who was persecuting Christians. And Peter told them to submit to him. So this is not a passage that says follow good governments. It's something far more uncomfortable, and far wider than that.
But Peter doesn't stop there. Right after, he says: live as free people. Submit — and then, live free. It sounds like a contradiction. But look more closely, and what Peter is describing is not the submission of fear. It is the submission of someone who chooses freely — because they know who they belong to. Not being pulled along by the current, but standing unshaken because your identity is already settled.
Honor everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honor the emperor. Four things, in one sentence. And the order matters. Fearing God comes before honoring the emperor. When you know who you are most afraid of, everything else loses its power to destabilize you. Not because the emperor isn't real or powerful — but because you know Someone greater.
Maybe that is what we need most right now. No matter what is happening in the world — knowing whose people we are. From that place, honoring what deserves honor, loving what deserves love, fearing what deserves fear. Not grand resistance, not helpless compliance — just living as free people.
Reflection
When you know who you fear most, everything else loses its power to shake you.
Intercessory Prayer
Tomorrow there is a wedding at our church. Hyungchul Ko and Piyadida registered at our church last year and, after much deliberation, decided to hold their wedding here. Just this past Sunday they asked me to officiate. I'm not sure whether the planning came together late because this is their first wedding and life has been busy, or whether they simply took their time making up their minds — but I felt the need to share this and ask for prayer. Please pray for these two young people as they begin their life together, and for me as I officiate.
After the wedding on Saturday, the young adults will be having a lock-in at the church — though "lock-in" might be a stretch, since everyone is planning to head home at a reasonable hour. They'll be talking through fall semester tabling and the overall direction of the young adult ministry. We're hoping to launch a Sunday service at Trinity Chapel starting in the fall. This needs a lot of prayer.
