어제는 아침 일찍부터 오클랜드에 있는 빌딩에 일이 있어서 다녀오느라 아침에 묵상을 쓸 시간이 없었습니다. 지난주에 이웃중에 한분이 저하고 감리사님께 문자로 교회관리가 엉망이라 동네사람들이 스트레스를 받는다고 연락이 왔습니다. 쓰레기도 그렇고 이런저런 물건들을 몰래버리고 갔다는 것입니다.

저희가 교회 야드를 맡기던 분들에게 하울링과 청소를 부탁하고, 생각보다 일이 일찍 끝나서 오린다캠퍼스에 올해 마지막이 될 잡초 정리를 부탁했습니다. 그렇게 시간을 보내니 시간을 놓치게 되었습니다.

오랜만에 오클랜드 빌딩을 살피면서 누군가가 침입하기 위해 안간힘을 쓴 흔적을 발견했습니다. 강제로 문을 열려다가 실패한 흔적속에 사용하지 않는 건물이 늘 이런 위협을 받는 생각에 비어있는 것에 대한 먹먹함이 잠시 밀려왔습니다. 마찬가지로 비어있는 공간을 사용하며 학생들과 사역을 하는 시간을 보면서 어디까지 끝도 없는 관심과 관리가 가능할까?라는 생각을 하며 우선순위에 냉정해야겠다는 생각을 하며 하루를 보냈습니다.

오늘 본문에서 바울은 스스로를 사도임을 증명해야하는 어려움을 이야기합니다. 고린도교회에 대한 바울의 열정은 수많은 시험에도 시들지 않았고, 재물을 구하는 것보다 여러분들을 구한다는 말로 바울의 분명한 목적을 이야기하고 있습니다.

열린교회의 분명한 목적이 있습니다. 돌이켜보면, 오클랜드에서 오린다로 이사할때 우리들이 소망하는 분명한 방향이 있습니다. 교회전체에 공개적으로 이야기한것도 있지만, 개인적으로는 단단한 한인공동체입니다. 교회, 예배 그리고 그너머 한인공동체도 세워가는 것 일이 먼저 떠오르겠지만, 일이 아니라 마음을 나누고 어려움을 이겨내는데 동행하는 공동체로서 열린교회를 꿈꿉니다.

그리고 또한가지, 저희가 힘을 다해 교회를 세워가는데 힘을 함께 모으기를 원합니다. 일은 혼자할때는 빠르게 하지만, 열매는 함께해야 열매가 생깁니다. 주저하지 말고 좋은 열매와 좋은 나눔을 위해 함께 힘을 썼으면 좋겠습니다.

묵상

우리의 기대보다 하나님의 원하는 것을 향하다보면 전혀 다른 것에 마음을 쓸수 있습니다.

Yesterday was an early start with business at the Oakland building, so there was no time to write in the morning. Last week, a neighbor sent a text to both me and the district superintendent — the building management has been causing stress for people in the area. Trash left around, various items dumped illegally. We arranged for the crew who handles our yard work to come out for a cleanup, and since they finished earlier than expected, we asked them to tackle the overgrowth at the Orinda campus as well — the last time we'll need that done this year. That's how the time slipped away.

Walking through the Oakland building after being away from it for a while, I noticed signs that someone had tried to force their way in. Marks of an attempted break-in that didn't succeed. Standing there, looking at an empty building showing the strain of being unoccupied — there was a moment of heaviness. Empty spaces carry their own kind of vulnerability. And thinking about the energy required to keep an eye on all of it, alongside the work being done at Trinity Chapel with the students — at some point you have to ask honestly where the limits are. The day ended with a quiet decision to be more clear-headed about priorities.

In today's passage, Paul is in the uncomfortable position of having to prove his own apostleship. The pressure is coming from inside the church he helped build. And through all of it, what he comes back to is this: what I am after is not your money. It is you. That is the whole point. The goal was never the institution or the resources — it was the people.

Yeolin Church has its own clear purpose. Looking back at the move from Oakland to Orinda, there was a specific direction we were reaching for — something we talked about openly as a congregation, and something I've carried personally. A Korean community with real substance. Church, worship — yes. But beyond the programs and the work, a community where hearts are shared, where people don't face their difficulties alone. That is what I dream Yeolin Church is becoming.

And one more thing. Building this church takes everyone's strength. Work done alone moves quickly. But fruit comes when people work together. Don't hold back. For the sake of good fruit and genuine sharing — let's do this together.

Reflection

When we orient ourselves toward what God wants rather than what we expect, we find ourselves caring about things we never anticipated.

1. Please pray for the young adults — and for the campus ministry. The opening worship service was yesterday, and the retreat is this week.

2. Please pray for Yeolin Church and its ministries. Please pray for revival and renewal.
