“2 Peter 2:17–22, Thursday, June 4”, 베드로후서 2:17-22, 6월4일 목요일

오늘 본문은 좀 불편한 내용입니다. 거짓 선생들에 대한 이야기입니다. 베드로가 이 편지를 쓰는 이유 중 하나가 바로 이 사람들 때문입니다. 공동체 안에 들어와서 잘못된 것을 가르치고, 사람들을 혼란에 빠뜨리는 사람들. 베드로의 언어가 거칩니다. 물 없는 샘, 폭풍에 밀려가는 안개. 있는 것 같은데 없는 것들입니다. 있어야 할 것이 없는 것들입니다.

17절에. "그들에게는 캄캄한 어둠이 마련되어 있습니다." 이 구절에서 어떤 마음으로 거짓교사들을 대하는 지를 잘 보여줍니다. 이들은 지금 당장은 화려해 보이고, 말도 그럴듯하고, 사람들을 끌어당기는 것 같아도, 결국 향하는 곳은 캄캄한 어둠이라는 것입니다.

18절은 더 진지하게 지적합니다.. "그들은 허무맹랑하게 큰소리를 칩니다. 그들은 그릇된 생활을 하는 자들에게서 가까스로 빠져 나온 사람들을 육체의 방종한 정욕으로 유혹합니다" 갓 벗어난 사람들. 막 신앙을 시작한 사람들, 이제 막 뭔가를 새롭게 시작하려는 사람들이 가장 취약하다는 것입니다. 아직 뿌리가 깊지 않은 사람들을 향해 허황된 말이 먼저 들어온다는 것입니다.

교회 안에서 오래 신앙생활을 하다 보면 이런 장면을 봅니다. 처음에는 좋아 보였는데 점점 이상해지는 것들. 처음에는 은혜로운 것 같았는데 나중에 보면 사람을 묶어두는 것들. 베드로가 이것을 경고하는 것은 이미 그 시대에도 이런 일이 있었기 때문입니다. 새로운 문제가 아닙니다. 아주 오래된 문제입니다.

20절에서 베드로가 더 날카롭게 말합니다. "사람들이 [우리의] 주님이시며 구주이신 예수 그리스도를 앎으로 세상의 더러운 것들에서 벗어났다가, 다시 거기에 말려들어서 정복을 당하면, 그런 사람들의 형편은 마지막에 더 나빠질 것입니다." 한번 알았던 사람이 돌아서는 것이 처음부터 몰랐던 것보다 더 나쁘다는 것입니다. 알았기 때문에 더 무거운 것입니다. 실제로 이런 경험은 공동체가 전부 아파할 수 밖에 없게 하는것 같습니다.

22절에 나오는 속담이 씁쓸하게 남습니다. "개는 자기가 토한 것을 도로 먹는다.” 그리고 “돼지는 몸을 씻고 나서, 다시 진창에 뒹군다.” 거칠지만 정확한 말입니다. 본성이 바뀌지 않으면 결국 원래 자리로 돌아간다는 것입니다. 그래서 신앙은 행동의 교정이 아니라 본성의 변화라는 것입니다. 겉을 닦는 것이 아니라, 안에서부터 달라지는 것입니다.

오늘 아침 불편한 본문을 붙들고 하루를 시작합니다. 하지만, 이 본문이 우리를 깨어있게합니다. 자극은 깨우고 준비하게 하는 힘이 있습니다. 이런의미에서 예수동행운동에서 하는 영성일기는 자극입니다. 내가 그리스도인이라는 자극, 예수님과 동행하는 사람이라는 분명한 자기인식을 있게하는 것. 잘 연구해서 교인들에게 잘 안내해보려고 합니다. 그러면 우리는 늘 든든하게 자기 자신과 교회공동체를 지켜갈 수 있을것 같습니다.

묵상

신앙은 겉을 닦는 것이 아니라, 안에서부터 달라지는 것입니다.

Today's passage is uncomfortable. It is about false teachers — one of the main reasons Peter wrote this letter in the first place. People who had come inside the community, teaching the wrong things, throwing people into confusion. Peter's language is blunt. Springs without water. Mists driven by a storm. Things that appear to be there but aren't. Things that should have something in them and don't.

Verse 17 shows clearly how Peter regards these teachers. Blackest darkness is reserved for them. Right now they may look impressive, their words may sound compelling, they may seem to draw people in — but the direction they are heading is toward deep darkness. What is going wrong will eventually show itself. What you see in the moment is not the whole story.

Verse 18 gets more pointed. For they mouth empty, boastful words and, by appealing to the lustful desires of the flesh, they entice people who are just escaping from those who live in error. People who are just escaping. Those who are just beginning their faith, those who are just starting something new — they are the most vulnerable. Empty and boastful words find their way in first, before the roots have gone deep.

Anyone who has been in church long enough has seen this kind of thing. Something that looked good at first but gradually became strange. Something that seemed full of grace at first but turned out, over time, to be the kind of thing that holds people captive. Peter warns about this because it was already happening in his time. This is not a new problem. It is a very old one.

Verse 20 cuts sharper. If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. Turning away after having known is worse than never having known at all. The knowing makes it heavier. And when this actually happens, the whole community ends up carrying that pain together.

The proverbs in verse 22 leave a bitter taste. A dog returns to its vomit. And a sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud. Rough words. But accurate. If the nature doesn't change, a person eventually returns to where they started. That is why faith is not a correction of behavior — it is a transformation of nature. Not cleaning the outside. Changing from the inside.

This morning begins with an uncomfortable passage in hand. But discomfort has a way of keeping us awake. Discomfort stirs us, prepares us. In that sense, the spiritual journal practice of the Walking with Jesus movement is a kind of productive discomfort — a daily reminder that I am a Christian, a regular return to the clear self-awareness that I am someone walking with Jesus. I want to study this well and help our congregation enter into it. If we do, I believe we will be able to hold ourselves and our community steady, with real roots underneath us.

Reflection

Faith is not cleaning the outside — it is being changed from the inside.
