바울이 데살로니가 교회에 두번째 편지를 쓰는 이유는 그만큼 관심이 가지고 교회가 든든히 세워지기를 바라는 마음이 있었기때문입니다. 박해는 여전했고, 교회는 흔들렸으며, 교회를 떠나는 사람, 이단적인 가르침에 교회가 어려운 상황에서 바울의 편지를 데살로니가 교회를 든든히 붙잡으려는 마음으로 담아 편지를 씁니다.

보통 이런 상황에서는 무엇이 걱정이고, 어떤것이 문제라는 것을 논리적으로 설명하려고 듭니다. 그런데 바울은 "감사하다"말로 시작합니다. 전혀 감사할것 같지 않은 상황에서 감사로 시작하는 바울의 편지는 데살로니가 교인들을 주목시키기에 충분했을 것입니다. 도대체 무엇이 감사하다는 걸까?

바울이 감사하다는 고백은 "택하심에 대한 감사"입니다. 처음부터 구원하시기 위해 하나님이 선택하신 은혜에 대한 감사! 바울이 사울일때 이름의 뜻은 "큰 사람!"이었습니다. 바울로 이름을 바꾼 이유는 바울은 "작은 사람"이라는 뜻입니다. 하나님앞에 존재가 겸손해진것입니다.

아이들 수련회에 와 있습니다. 처음 리트릿에 온 친구들 이번이 캠퍼로 마지막이고 내년부터는 스텝이나 카운셀로로 봉사하겠다고 하는 아이들, 매년 유니티를 통해 여름을 보내는 아이들이 이 시간을 기대하는 것을 느끼고 있습니다.

안하던 베이스기타를 연주해야한다고 하는데, 손가락을 아프고 오랫동안 안하던것을 다시 하는 부담감으로 적잖은 스트레스를 받으며 시간을 보내고 있습니다. 장소는 예년보다 좋아서 숙소는 깨끗하고 불편하지만, 샤워를 하기 위해 조금 걸어야하는 그 곳은 깨끗하고 관리가 잘되어 있습니다.

매년 유니티를 곁에서 지켜보다 직접 참여하면서, 보람은 크지만 이를 위해 헌신하는 청년들과 준비하는 사역자들의 수고와 한계를 느끼게 됩니다. 희망이 보이면서도 한계를 경험하는 것은 이제는 교회안에서 익숙하게 경험되어집니다. 일을 하려고 하면 한계가 크게 보이고, 은혜와 사랑을 기대한다면 그 한계를 넘어 희망이 보여지는것 같습니다.

바울이 이런 마음으로 데살로니가 교회를 바라보고 있는것 같습니다 한계는 분명히 있습니다. 문제도 많고, 교인들이 힘들어하는 것을 잘 압니다. 그런데 바울은 감사를 먼저 고백합니다.

3장 3절에 "주님은 신실하십니다. 그분은 여러분을 굳건하게 하시고, 악한 자에게서 지켜 주실 것입니다." 주님의 신실하심입니다. 내가 신실해야 한다는 것이 아닙니다. 주님이 신실하시다는 것입니다. 내가 흔들려도, 내가 약해도, 주님이 신실하시기 때문에 굳건하게 하신다는 것입니다. 지키시는 분이 따로 계신다는 것입니다.

대부분은 스스로를 지켜야, 스스로 신앙을 붙들어야 한다고 생각하지만, 하나님이 굳건하게 지켜주신다고 합니다.

묵상

내가 신실해야 버티는 것이 아닙니다. 신실하신 주님이 우리를 굳건하게 하십니다.

Paul writes a second letter to the church in Thessalonica because he genuinely cares — he wants to see this community stand firm. Persecution is ongoing, the church is shaking, people are leaving, and false teaching has crept in. Into all of that, Paul sits down and writes — not to lay out a strategic plan, but to hold them steady with his words.

In a situation like this, the natural instinct is to start by identifying the problems, explaining what's going wrong, laying out the concerns in logical order. But Paul begins with thanks. In circumstances that seem to give no obvious reason for gratitude, he opens with gratitude. That alone must have stopped the Thessalonians in their tracks. What on earth is he thankful for?

What Paul is thankful for is election — the grace of being chosen. God chose them from the beginning for salvation. That is the thing Paul cannot get past. He used to be Saul — a name meaning great one. He changed it to Paul, which means small one. His very name became a confession: before God, I am the small one. The grace of being chosen by that God, despite being small — that is what makes gratitude possible even in hard seasons.

I am writing this from the youth retreat. Some of the kids here are attending for the first time. Others are here for their last year as campers — telling me they want to come back next year as staff or counselors. Every summer, Unity becomes the rhythm of this season for them, and you can feel how much they have been looking forward to it.

I have been asked to play bass guitar — something I haven't done in a long time. My fingers ache, and there are more songs I don't know than ones I do. It has been its own quiet source of stress. The venue is better than in previous years — the rooms are clean, and the shower facilities require a short walk but are well kept. A small inconvenience, easily managed.

Watching Unity from the sidelines all these years and now being part of it directly — the sense of meaning is real, but so is the awareness of limits. The young adults giving their vacation time, the ministry workers stretching beyond what they have. When I focus on the work, the limits loom large. When I focus on grace and love, hope appears beyond those limits. I think this is exactly how Paul was looking at the church in Thessalonica. The limits were real. The problems were many. And he knew the people were struggling. But Paul leads with gratitude.

Chapter 3, verse 3: The Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. It is the Lord who is faithful — not us. The invitation is not to hold ourselves together through sheer determination. We shake. We weaken. And the Lord, who is faithful, is the one who keeps us standing. Most of us quietly assume we have to sustain our own faith, hold ourselves in place by our own grip. But Paul says: there is One who keeps you. That is different.

Reflection

We do not stand firm by being faithful enough. We are held firm by the One who is faithful.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Please pray that the Unity Retreat comes to a strong finish and everyone gets home safely — and that the finances work out without issue. Many from our church have come to serve this year — young adults who took time off work to be here, sharing a dream for what the young adult ministry can become. Please pray for them.
