Ephesians 3:14-21

Knowing Love

1. To summarize the July sermons, the first and second Sundays were about boasting. The first boast was that we should "boast in our weaknesses."

2. We discussed how showing weakness means filling in the gaps with God's power.

3. The second boast is that we should boast that "we are all God's children, and he has made us heirs."

4. We talked about the importance of remembering these two boasting points because we need to know exactly where we stand in our relationship with God to know where we are headed in our faith.

5. Last week, in week three, we talked about "priorities," and I said that while many complex and varied issues will be visible as we live out our faith in the Church, "God's fairness and justice" should be our first priority.

6. It may sound too big, but it is essential to remember that being a Christian means being fearless in dreaming big and taking significant action.

7. big people don't do big things but are called to do small or big things.

8. we will talk about "love" for the last part of July.

9. Perhaps today's text concludes what we discussed earlier about boasting and prioritizing.

10. whatever we boast about and prioritize in our practical lives is based on God's love for us.

11. Earlier in today's reading, Paul discusses "the economy of God's salvation." 12.

12. Paul is serious when discussing how God is preparing and working to save us.

13. Paul confesses that God's plan is that "He had a plan to save this world."

14. This is what we read in the Gospel of John. John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life."

15. this passage is very famous, and the reference to "this world" is the realm of God's love that John is conveying, that God is preparing and carrying out God's plan of salvation, which is broader and more extended than we realize.

16. Our reading today concerns how this plan begins and how we experience it.

17. In verse 14, Paul begins the text by saying, "I kneel and pray to the Father." You can see the desperation in Paul's voice.

18. in verse 15, he confesses that the Father has named everything in this world.

19. This is Paul's confession: "God is the one who made the earth and established each and every one of them."

20. that nothing came into existence out of nowhere without God's knowledge.

21. Paul confesses that God created this world, piece by piece, through his efforts.

22. For this to be true in our lives here and now, we must have a clear conviction that there is nothing in our world that God has not touched.

23. It's not just the natural world, but all of creation. You will encounter people and things that are uncomfortable and unfamiliar to you, but God made them, too.

24. People sometimes create beings in their imaginations that represent evil and are worthy of opposition to God, but the Bible is clear that God is the creator of everything in this world.

25. When people create these entities out of their fears, tendencies, or personalities and become anxious about them, they have not encountered God personally or do not know God well enough to recognize them.

26. We must remember that God made this world, and it is His will that we live in the order He created.

27. Remember that nothing was made on earth without God's knowledge.

28. In verse 16, we are told that through the "Holy Spirit," he strengthens the inner man in all people.

29. The English Bible says, "His Spirit will make you become strong followers."

30. the literal translation of strengthening the inner man is that God will make you a strong follower.

31. Some people worry that this English translation is too simple a translation of the original text and too simple to understand, but it doesn't need to be.

32. In Paul's view, God is interested in building everyone up as a strong follower of God, a person who follows God.

33. In verse 17, we are told to "pray that Christ may remain in our hearts through faith," which gives us a good idea of what "strong follower" means.

34. We can be influential followers of God because "Christ is in us" through "our faith."

Paul continues to tell us something that sounds simple but is very difficult.

In order for Christ to be in us, we must have faith, and this faith enables us to become powerful followers of God through the Holy Spirit.

37. in the end, God starts it, but what else is necessary?

38. it starts with God, but we must respond in faith.

39. we must realize this, take it to heart, and remember it. Again, it takes work.

40. So Paul continues in the second half of verse 17, verse 18, and verse 19 to tell us how we can do this difficult thing.

41. Let's look at it on the screen and read it together: "...that you may be rooted and grounded in love, 18that you, along with all the saints, may be able to comprehend what is the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ's love, 19and to know what is the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."

42. Whose love is it that "you are rooted and grounded in love"?

43. Be rooted and grounded in the love of the Lord your God.

44. This is a declaration that God is the one who treats us with absolute love.

45. What is God like?

46. He is the one who loves us. What kind of person is He? He loves us.

47. But we are not just loved; we are rooted and grounded in this love.

48. The English Bible translates it as Stand Firm and be deeply rooted in his love.

49. My life and yours should be deeply rooted in this love and not waver.

50. Then, we can understand the long, comprehensive, and deep meaning of what God has called us to.

51. In other words, we will know how far God's love reaches and who he loves beyond our wildest dreams.

52. To have this understanding, we need to understand God's love so well that we can understand everything.

53. Paul has experienced that his ministry to the Gentiles presented more challenges than he expected.

54. He tried to solve this problem and seems to have been thinking about how to understand God specifically.

55. After this struggle, Paul's confession is an understanding of "the love of God."

56. What role do followers of God play in this?

57. someone who can boast about their weaknesses without hiding them.

58. to boast of being God's children and heirs.

59. to remember that we are called to bring God's equity and justice to the earth and to live lives that demonstrate that.

60. and to be strong followers of God by letting the love he gives us take root deep within us.

61. Stop believing vaguely and remember clearly how God has called us, what He has called us to do, and what we are specifically called to do to make it happen.

62. May we not be ashamed of our lack, but may we be like you and me, boasting in God's grace that makes up for our lack.

63. May I and you remember that we are holy beings living on this earth as children and heirs of God.

64. May we remember that our lives are meaningful because we are called to live on this earth as people committed to realizing and establishing God's equity and justice on earth.

65. Finally, may I make it our life's goal to live so that God's love transforms us into lovers and influential followers of God's work.

66. when we think of love, we think of what we will receive, but instead, I pray that you and I will live our lives with more emphasis on how we love.

67. God still loves us fervently, and we are to pass on that love fervently, revealing God's fairness and justice,

68. we live as God's children and heirs on this earth and can boast of God's power to provide for our every need.

69. For July, Boasting and Priorities, we believe that if we are "rooted in the love of God" and live out that love on earth as influential followers of God, we will be able to love like God, establish equity and justice, and live as children and heirs of God, experiencing God's power to fill in the gaps.

70. The theme of the sermon for August is Eternal Life.

사랑을 아는것

1.     7월의 설교내용을 잠깐 요약하자면, 첫주와 둘째주일은 자랑해야할 것 두가지를 나누었습니다. 첫번째 자랑은 “약함을 자랑해야 한다고 말씀드렸습니다.”

2.     약함을 드러내는 것은 곧 부족함을 하나님의 능력으로 채워가는 것임을 의미한다고 말씀드렸습니다.

3.     두번째 자랑할 것은 “우리들이 모두 하나님의 자녀이고, 상속자로 세워주셨다”는 것을 자랑해야한다고 말씀드렸습니다.

4.     하나님과의 우리의 관계를 정확하게 알아야 신앙생활의 방향을 잘 알 수 있으니 이 두가지 자랑 거리를 기억해야 한다고 말씀드렸습니다.

5.     세째주인 지난주에는 “우선순위”에 대해서 이야기 나누었는데, 복잡하고 다양한 과제들이 교회안에 신앙생활을 하면서 눈에 보이게 될텐데 가장 우선적으로 실천해야 할 것은 “하나님의 공평과 정의”라고 말씀드렸습니다.

6.     너무 거창하게 들릴지 모르겠지만, 기독교인이 되었다는 것은 이런 거창하고 큰 꿈을 품고 큰 실천하는 것을 주저하지 않는다는 것을 기억하셔야 합니다.

7.     큰 일을 큰 사람이 하는 것이 아니라, 부름 받아야 작은 일이든 큰일이든 할 수 있습니다.

8.     7월의 마지막은 “사랑”에 대해서 이야기하려고 합니다.

9.     아마, 앞서서 이야기했던, 자랑과 우선순위에 결론정도로 오늘 본문을 읽을 수 있을 것 같습니다.

10.   우리가 자랑할 것이든, 우리들이 우선순위를 세우며 살아가야 하는 실제적인 삶에서는, 하나님의 우리에게 베푸신 사랑을 근거로 합니다.

11.    오늘 읽은 본문 앞에서 바울은 “하나님의 구원의 경륜”에 대해서 이야기합니다.

12.   하나님이 어떻게 우리를 구원하시려고 준비하시고 노력하시는지에 대해서 바울은 진지하게 이야기하고 있습니다.

13.   바울이 고백하는 하나님의 계획은 “이 세사랑을 구원하기 위한 계획을 가지셨다”고 합니다.

14.   이는 요한복음에서 읽혀지는 내용입니다. 요한복음 3:16, “하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생에 이르게 함이라”

15.   이 구절은 매우 유명합니다. 그리고, “이 세상”이라는 기준은 우리들이 생각하는 것보다 더 넓고 확장된 하나님의 구원의 계획을 하나님이 준비하시고 실천하고 계시다는 것이 요한이 전하는 하나님 사랑의 영역입니다.  

16.   오늘 읽은 본문은 바로, 이런 하나님의 계획이 어떻게 시작되고 우리들이 경험하게 되는지에 대해서 이야기하고 있습니다.

17.   14절에 바울이 “아버지께 무릎을 꿇고 빕니다”라고 본문이 시작합니다. 바울의 간절함이 묻어나는 문장입니다.

18.   그리고 15절에 아버지께서 이 세상에 모든 것들에게 이름을 붙여주셨다고 고백합니다.

19.   바울의 이 고백은 “하나님이 이 땅을 만드시고, 하나 하나 세워주신 분”이라는 고백입니다.

20.   어디서 갑자기 하나님 모르게 생겨난 것이 없다는 것입니다.

21.   하나 하나 하나님이 노력하셔서 이 세상을 창조했다고 바울은 고백하고 있습니다.

22.   이런 고백이 지금 현재 우리들의 삶에서도 일어나려면, 우리들이 사는 세상에 하나님의 손길이 닿지 않은 것이 없다 것에 대한 분명한 확신이 있으셔야 합니다.

23.   단순히 이 땅의 자연만을 이야기하는 것이 아니라, 모든 피조물을 포함합니다. 여기서 불편한 사람, 익숙하지 않은 존재들을 경험할텐데, 이 마저도 하나님이 만드셨다는 겁니다.

24.   사람들은 가끔 하나님과 대적할 만한 자로 악함을 대표하는 존재들을 상상속에서 만들어내지만, 성경에는 이 세상의 모든 것을 만들어 내신 분은 하나님이시라고 분명히 고백하고 있습니다.

25.   자기 개인의 두려움을 또는 자기가 가진 성향이나 성격에 이런 존재들을 만들어서 불안해하는데, 하나님이 만드신 것 이외에 자기 자신이 만들어낸 것에 붙들려 사는 것은 하나님을 인격적으로 만나지 못했거나, 하나님을 잘 모를 때 일어는 것입니다.

26.   이 세상은 하나님이 만드셨고, 하나님이 만드신 질서속에서 우리들이 살아가기를 원하시는 것이 하나님의 뜻이라는 것을 기억해야 합니다.

27.   하나님 모르게 이 땅에 만들어진 것은 없다는 것을 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

28.   그리고 16절에 보면, “성령”을 통해 모든 사람들의 속사람을 강건하게 하셨다고 합니다.

29.   속사람을 강건하게 하셨다는 뜻은 영어성경은 “his Spirit will make you become strong followers”라고 이야기하고 있습니다.

30.   그러니까, 속사람을 강건하게 한다는 말을 직역하면 하나님을 따르는 강력한 Follower로 만드신다는 뜻입니다.

31.   사실 이 영어번역은 너무 간단하게 원래 원어본문을 번역해서, 그 이해가 너무 간단하다고 걱정하는 분들도 있지만,  복잡하게 이해할 필요는 없는 것 같습니다.

32.   바울이 볼때, 하나님은 모든 사람을 하나님의 강력한 추종자, 즉 하나님을 따라가는 사람으로 세우시는 것에 관심이 있다는 것입니다.

33.   17절에, “믿음으로 그리스도를 우리들의 마음속에 머물게 하기를 기도”한다고 하는데, 이 구절은 “강력한 Follower”가 어떤 의미인지를 잘 알려줍니다.

34.   우리들이 하나님의 강력한 추종자가 될 수 있는 것은 “우리의 믿음”을 통해 “우리 안에 그리스도가 계시면” 그렇게 된다는 것입니다.

35.   바울은 간단하게 이야기하지만 사실 굉장히 어려운 이야기를 계속 우리에게 하고 있습니다.

36.   그리스도가 우리 안에 있으려면, 믿음이 있어야 하고, 이런 믿음이 있어야 성령을 통해 우리들이 하나님의 강력한 추종자가 된다는 것입니다.

37.   결국 하나님이 이 일을 시작하시지만, 무엇이 꼭 필요합니까?

38.   하나님으로 부터 시작하지만, 우리가 믿음으로 반드시 응답해야합니다.

39.   이걸 깨닫고 마음에 새기고, 잊어버리지 않는 것이 중요합니다. 또 다시 말씀드리지만, 쉽지는 않습니다.

40.   그래서 바울은 17절 후반부와 18절로, 19절 이어지는 구절을 통해 이 어려운 것을. 어떻게 우리들이 할 수 있는지를 이야기하고 있습니다.

41.   화면으로 보시고 함께 읽어보겠습니다. “…여러분이 사랑 속에 뿌리를 박고 터를 잡아서, 18모든 성도와 함께 여러분이 그리스도의 사랑의 너비와 길이와 높이와 깊이가 어떠 한지를 깨달을 수 있게 되고, 19지식을 초월하는 그리스도의 사랑을 알게 되기를 빕니다. 그리하여 하나님의 온갖 충만하심으로 여러분이 충만하여지기를 바랍니다.”

42.   “여러분이 사랑속에 뿌리를 박고 터를 잡아서” 누구의 사랑을 말하는 것입니까?

43.   네 하나님의 사랑속에 뿌리를 박고 터를 잡으라는 것입니다.

44.   이 말은 하나님이 우리를 절대적으로 사랑으로 대하시는 분이라는 선언입니다.

45.   하나님은 어떤 분이신가요?

46.   우리를 사랑하시는 분이십니다. 어떤 분이시라고요? 우리를 사랑하는 분입니다.

47.   그런데 우리가 사랑을 받는 것만 하는 게 아니라, 우리가 이 사랑속에 뿌리를 박고 터를 잡으라는 거에요.

48.   영어성경에서는 Stand Firm and be deeply rooted in his love 라고 번역해 놨어요.

49.   이 사랑을 잘 기억하고 흔들리지 말고 그 사랑안에 저와 여러분의 삶이 깊이 뿌리를 내려야 한다는 거에요.

50.   그러면, 우리들이 하나님이 우리를 부르신 길고도 넓고도 깊은 의미를 이해할 수 있다고 합니다.

51.   다시 말해 하나님의 사랑이 어디까지 미치는지, 우리의 생각을 뛰어넘어 누구까지 사랑하시는지를 우리들이 알 수 있게 된다는 것입니다.

52.   이런 이해를 가지려면 하나님의 사랑을 잘 이해하면 다 이해할 수 있다는 것입니다.

53.   바울은 복음을 전하는데 이방인들을 향한 사역이 생각보다 많은 어려움에 부딪힌다는 것을 경험했던것 같습니다.

54.    이를 해결하기 위해 노력했으며 구체적으로 하나님을 어떻게 이해해야 하는가를 고민했던 것 같습니다.

55.   이런 고민 끝에 바울이 고백하는 것은 “하나님의 사랑”에 대한 이해였습니다.

56.   그러면 하나님을 따르는 추종자가 어떤 역할을 하는 사람들일까요?

57.   약함을 숨기지 않고 자랑할 수 있는 사람입니다.

58.   하나님의 자녀가 되고, 상속자가 되었다는 것을 자랑하는 것입니다.

59.   하나님의 공평과 정의를 이 땅에 실현하기 위해 우리들이 부름 받았음을 기억하고 실천하는 삶을 사는 것입니다.

60.   그리고, 주님이 주시는 사랑을 깊이 우리 안에 뿌리내리게 해서, 하나님의 강력한 팔로워가 되는 것입니다.

61.   막연하게 믿는 것을 이제는 멈추시고, 분명하게 하나님이 우리를 어떻게 부르셨고, 무엇을 하게 하셨으며, 이를 위해 우리들이 구체적으로 어떤 일들을 해야 하는지 기억하시기 바랍니다.

62.   부족함이 우리를 부끄럽게 하는 것이 아니라, 부족함을 채우시는 하나님의 은혜를 자랑하시는 저와 여러분이 되기를 간절히 바랍니다.

63.   하나님의 자녀, 상속자로 이 땅을 살아가는 거룩한 존재임을 기억하며 살아가는 저와 여러분이 되기를 바랍니다.

64.   하나님의 공평과 정의를 이 땅에 실현하고 세우기 위해 헌신하는 부름 받은자로 이 땅을 살아가는 우리들의 삶을 의미 있게 기억하시는 저와 여러분이 되기를 바랍니다.

65.   마지막으로, 하나님의 사랑이, 곧 우리들이 사랑하는 자로 바꾸셔서 하나님일을 따르는 강력한 추종자가 되는 삶을 사는 것을 삶의 목표로 세워 가시는 저와 여러분이 되기를 바랍니다.

66.   우리는 사랑이라고 생각하면 받을 것만 생각하는데, 그러지 마시고, 어떻게 사랑하며 살아갈 것인가에 더 무게를 두고 살아가는 저와 여러분이 되기를 간절히 바랍니다.

67.   하나님은 여전히 열심히 우리를 사랑하시고, 우리는 그 사랑을 열심히 전하는 것 이를 통해 하나님의 공평과 정의를 드러내 보이고,

68.   하나님의 자녀 답게, 상속자 답게 이 땅을 살아가는 존재로 살아가는 것이고, 부족함이 있더라도 그 것을 채워 가시는 하나님의 능력을 자랑할 수 있는 것입니다.

69.   7월 한달, 자랑과 우선순위 이 모든 것들은 “하나님의 사랑 안에서 뿌리를 내리면” 그리고 그 사랑을 이 땅에 실천하며 강력한 하나님의 추종자가 되면, 우리는 하나님 처럼 사랑할 수 있고, 공평과 정의를 세우며, 하나님의 자녀로 상속자 다운 모습으로 하나님이 부족함을 채우는 것을 경험하며 이 땅을 살아갈 수 있으리라 믿스빈다.

70.   8월 한달 설교의 주제는 영생입니다.

71.   주보에 적혀 있는 것처럼 8월 한달동안 영생에 대해서 이야기할텐데, 더 깊은 믿음의 여정을 위해 함께 노력하기를 바랍니다.
