"섬 사람들이 우리에게 특별한 친절을 베풀어 주었다." (행 28:2a, 새번역)

배가 난파되었습니다. 276명이 살아서 해변에 올라왔습니다. 몰타 섬입니다. 아무것도 없는 상황입니다. "비가 내린 뒤라서 날씨가 추웠으므로, 그들은 불을 피워서 우리를 맞아 주었다." 거창한 것이 아닙니다. 비 맞고 추운 사람들을 위해 불을 피워주는 것. 그런데 그것이 특별한 친절이었습니다.

요즘 친절이 특별한 것이 되어가는 시대인 것 같습니다. 당연한 것이 아니라 눈에 띄는 것이 되어버린 시대. 그런데 섬 사람들이 한 것은 그냥 당연한 것을 한 것입니다. 추운 사람들이 있으니 불을 피워준 것입니다. 그 당연한 것이 276명의 생존자들에게 가장 필요한 것이었습니다.

"바울이 나뭇가지를 한 아름 모아다가 불에 넣으니." 죄수 신분입니다. 로마로 압송되는 길입니다. 그런데 불을 피우는 일을 거들고 있습니다. 자기가 지금 어떤 처지인지, 앞으로 어떻게 될지 불확실한 상황인데도, 지금 눈앞에 있는 것을 합니다. 나뭇가지를 모으는 것. 거창하지 않습니다. 그냥 지금 할 수 있는 것을 합니다.

그런데 나뭇가지 속에 독사가 있었습니다. "뜨거운 기운 때문에 독사가 한 마리 튀어나와서, 바울의 손에 달라붙었습니다." 섬 사람들이 수군거립니다. "이 사람은 틀림없이 살인자이다. 바다에서는 살아 나왔지만, 정의의 여신이 그를 그대로 살려 두지 않는다." 그런데 바울이 뱀을 불 속에 털어버리고 아무렇지 않습니다. 사람들이 기다립니다. 분명히 쓰러질 것이라고 기다립니다. 그런데 아무 일도 없습니다. 그러자 "생각을 바꾸어서, 그를 신이라고 하였습니다."

이 장면이 좀 웃깁니다. 살인자라고 했다가, 아무렇지 않으니까 신이라고 합니다. 사람들의 판단이 얼마나 빨리 바뀌는지를 보여줍니다. 바울은 그 판단에 흔들리지 않습니다. 살인자라고 해도 흔들리지 않았고, 신이라고 해도 흔들리지 않았습니다. 사람들의 시선이 자기 정체성을 결정하지 않는다는 것입니다.

"마침 보블리오의 아버지가 열병과 이질에 걸려서 병석에 누워 있었습니다. 그래서 바울은 들어가서 기도하고, 그에게 손을 얹어서 낫게 해주었습니다." 소문이 퍼졌고, 섬의 병든 사람들이 다 찾아오고, 다 고침을 받습니다. 난파된 해변에서 시작된 이야기가 섬 전체의 치유로 이어진것입니다. 지금 눈앞에 있는 사람에게 최선을 다했더니 이렇게 큰일들이 일어났습니다

목회하면서 계획대로 되지 않는 상황이 자주 있습니다. 반대로, 전혀 예상하지 않았는데, 뜻밖에 일어나는 일들을, 사람들의 헌신이 있습니다. 오늘 본문을 보면, 기적은 특별하고 능력있고, 완벽하게 세워진 계획을 통해 기적이 일어나는 것이 아니라, 눈앞에 닥친 것을 최선을 다해 돕는 마음과 행위를 통해 일어나는 것을 확인할 수 있습니다. 하나님은 이렇게 일하시는 것 같습니다.

아침부터 분주합니다. 둘째가 졸업하는 날이라 온가족이 총출동이라 화장실도 분주하고, 머리 말리는 드라이소리, 분주하게 오고가는 발소리에 여느때와 다른 분위기에서 묵상을 하며 글을 씁니다. 오늘 아침에 일어나면서, 감사한 마음으로 눈을 떴습니다. 잘 걷지도 못하고 잘 먹지도 못해서 걱정했던 아이가 고등학교를 졸업하다니... 어제 한국에 계신 어머니와 통화하는데, "시간 가는게 무섭다"고 하십니다. 기쁘지만 동시에 그만큼 나이들어가는 것을 깊이 받아들이는 고백이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 그럼에도 감사한건 그 시간을 꼭 오고 그 시간을 통과한 아이들이 이제 세상을 짊어질것이라는 생각에 감사하고 든든합니다.

지금 눈앞에 있는 것에 최선을 다하면 그 시간들을 넘어 기적처럼 오는 새로운 기대가 바로 눈앞에 있는것 같습니다.

하나님은 난파된 해변에서도 일하십니다. 지금 이 자리가 하나님의 자리입니다.

"The islanders showed us unusual kindness." (Acts 28:2a)

The ship has wrecked. All 276 people make it to shore alive. Malta. They have nothing. And the text says: It was raining and cold, so they built a fire and made us all welcome. Nothing grand about it. Just building a fire for people who are cold and soaked. And yet that was the unusual kindness.

It feels like kindness has become unusual these days. Not something ordinary — something that stands out. But what the islanders did was simply the obvious thing. There were cold people in front of them, so they lit a fire. That obvious thing was exactly what 276 survivors needed most.

Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and put it on the fire. A prisoner. Being taken to Rome under guard. And here he is, helping tend the fire. Uncertain about his situation, uncertain about what comes next — and yet he does what is in front of him. Gathering firewood. Nothing impressive. Just what can be done right now.

But there is a snake in the brushwood. A viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. The islanders whisper to each other: This man must be a murderer. He survived the sea, but Justice has not allowed him to live. Paul shakes the snake into the fire and feels no harm. The islanders wait. Surely he will swell up or drop dead. But nothing happens. And so they changed their minds and said he was a god.

There is something almost funny about this scene. A murderer one moment, a god the next. It shows how quickly people's judgments shift. Paul is not moved by either verdict. He was not shaken when they called him a murderer, and he was not shaken when they called him a god. Other people's assessments do not get to determine who he is.

Publius's father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer, placed his hands on him and healed him. Word spreads. The sick people of the island start coming. All of them are healed. What began on a shipwrecked beach becomes healing for an entire island. Paul did not plan this. He simply gave his full attention to the person in front of him.

Ministry often doesn't go according to plan. But the opposite is also true — things happen that were never planned at all, through unexpected moments and unexpected people giving what they have. Today's passage shows that miracles don't require special conditions, impressive credentials, or a perfectly organized strategy. They come through the simple act of doing your best for whoever is standing in front of you. That seems to be how God works.

This morning is busier than usual. Our second child is graduating today, and the whole family is in full motion — the bathroom occupied, the sound of a hair dryer, footsteps going back and forth. I'm writing this devotional in the middle of a different kind of morning. I woke up this morning with a grateful heart. This child who couldn't walk well, couldn't eat well, who gave us so much worry — and now graduating from high school. Yesterday I called my mother in Korea, and she said, the way time passes frightens me. It is a joyful thing, but also a confession of how deeply she feels the years going by. And yet what I feel is gratitude — that the time came, that these children passed through it, and that they are now the ones who will carry the world on their shoulders.

When you give your best to what is right in front of you, there comes a moment when you look up and find something that looks like a miracle waiting just ahead.

God works even on a shipwrecked beach. Wherever you are standing right now is where God is at work.
