Galatians 4:21–5:1, Tuesday, July 21, 갈라디아서 4:21-5:1, 7월21일 화요일

"그리스도께서 우리를 해방시켜 주셔서, 자유를 누리게 하셨습니다. 그러므로 굳게 서서, 다시는 종살이의 멍에를 메지 마십시오." (갈 5:1, 새번역)

월드컵이 끝났습니다. 4년에 한번 있는 전세계 축구축제는 이제 4년후에 있습니다. 그 시간은 우리를 많은 변화의 시간으로 지나갈것이고, 우리는 다시한번 축구를 응원하기 위해 TV앞에 모일겁니다.

월드컵을 보면서 아이들이 커갑니다. 열린교회에서 두번의 월드컵을 보았으니 시간은 꽤 이 공동체안에서 제 삶이 살아내지고 있는 것 같습니다. 이렇게 시간은 가고 우리는 함께 삶을 살아내고, 여기에 예상하는 경험, 예상못한 경험과 다양한 삶을 만나게 될것입니다.

시간은 가고 잊혀지는 것도 있겠지만, 채워지는 것도 있다는 뜻이겠죠. 그런데 시간이 지나도 바뀌지 않는게 있습니다. 사람은 고쳐쓰는 거 아니다 라는 말에 강하게 거부감이 있음에도 현실에서 마주하는 어쩔수 없는 것들에 삶은 고스란히 막막함에 절망하는 경우도 있을 것 같습니다.

바울은 갈라디아 교회에 예수 그리스도의 복음으로 새롭게 누리는 자유인의 삶을 여전히 종의 멍애에 묶여있는 것을 안타까워하고 있습니다. 은혜의 방식이라는 새로운 방식이 선물로 주어졌는데, 여전히 율법의 방식에 어우적 거리는 것에 대한 안타까움.

시간이 가면 자연스럽게 세상이 좋아질것이라고, 발전하고 성장한다고 생각하지만, 실제 우리들의 삶은 여전히 수천년간 변함없는 한계에 허우적 거리고 있을지 모릅니다. 바울이 쓴 오늘 편지는 지금도 우리들에게 깊은 사색의 공간으로 초대합니다. 바울과 이어지는 수많은 그리스도인들의 헌신으로 우리도 하나님을 믿고 하나님의 자녀가 되었고, 예수와 동행하는 공동상속자가 되었어도 우리는 여전히 바울이 고민하고 지적하는 것에 허우적 거리고 있습니다.

주님이 주신 은혜의 기쁨으로 자유를 누리며 살아가야 합니다.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1)

The World Cup is over. The global festival of football that comes once every four years is now four years away. That stretch of time will carry us through a great deal of change — and then we will gather again in front of a screen to cheer. Watching the World Cup, the children grow. We've now watched two of them here at Yeolin Church, which means a good portion of my life has been lived out inside this community. Time passes, and we live it together — the experiences we anticipated, the ones we never saw coming, the full texture of it all.

Time passes and some things are forgotten, but other things fill in. And yet there are things that don't seem to change no matter how much time goes by. There is a saying that people don't really change — and even if something in us resists that idea, the reality we encounter in everyday life can leave us feeling stuck and quietly without hope.

Paul looks at the Galatian church and feels something like grief. The freedom of life in Christ has been given to them as a gift — and yet they are still tangled up in the old way, the way of the slave. A new way of grace has been placed in their hands, and they are still reaching back for the law. The frustration in Paul's words is the frustration of someone watching people refuse a gift they've already been given.

We tend to assume that time brings improvement — that the world naturally grows better, that people develop and mature. But the truth may be that our actual lives are still caught in the same limitations that have always been there. Paul's letter, written centuries ago, still reads like an invitation into deep reflection today. Through Paul and the long line of faithful people who followed, we have come to know God, become God's children, co-heirs walking with Jesus — and still we find ourselves caught in exactly the patterns Paul was addressing. The struggle isn't new. It is old and persistent.

We are meant to live in the freedom and joy of the grace the Lord has given us.
