Hebrews 13:1–16, Tuesday, June 9, 히브리서 13:1-16, 6월9일 화요일

"예수 그리스도께서는 어제도 오늘도 영원히 같은 분이십니다." (히 13:8, 새번역)

히브리서의 마지막 장입니다. 긴 신학적 논증이 끝나고, 이제 실제 삶의 이야기가 나옵니다. 형제 사랑을 계속하십시오. 나그네를 대접하십시오. 갇힌 자를 기억하십시오. 결혼을 귀히 여기십시오. 돈을 사랑하지 마십시오. 읽다 보면 이게 2천 년 전 편지인지, 오늘 아침 내게 쓴 편지인지 구분이 안 될 만큼 가깝게 느껴집니다.

1절이 도전적인 말씀을 전합니다. "형제 사랑을 계속하십시오." 계속하라는 것입니다. 시작하라는 것이 아닙니다. 이미 하고 있는데, 멈추지 말라는 것입니다. 아마 히브리서를 받아 읽는 공동체가 지쳐있었던 것 같습니다. 박해가 있었고, 흩어졌고, 서로를 돌보는 것이 버거워지기 시작했던 시절이었을 것입니다. 그 자리에서 계속하라는 말. 거창한 새 출발이 아니라, 이미 해오던 것을 놓지 말라는 것입니다.

2절은 익숙하면서도 삶에서 실제로 이런 마음으로 살아가는 것에 대한 경계가있는 우리시대에 깊은 생각을 던져줍니다. "나그네 대접하기를 소홀히 하지 마십시오. 어떤 이들은 나그네를 대접하다가 자기도 모르게 천사들을 대접하였습니다." 아브라함 이야기입니다. 마므레 상수리나무 곁에 앉아있다가 나타난 세 사람을 영접했던 그 장면을 소환하고 있습니다. 여기서 히브리서 저자가 하고 싶은 말은 대접을 잘하면 천사를 만날 수 있다는 것이 아니라, 내 앞에 있는 낯선 사람이 어떤 사람인지 모른다는 것입니다. 알 수 없기 때문에 소홀히 하지 말라는 것입니다.

5절에서 돈 이야기가 나옵니다. "돈을 사랑하는 것에서 벗어나서 지금 가진 것으로 만족하십시오." 지금 가진 것으로 만족하라는 것입니다. 이게 말은 쉬운데, 사는 것은 어렵습니다. 늘 조금 더 있으면 좋겠다는 마음이 드는 것이 사람입니다. 그런데 히브리서가 이 말을 하면서 바로 이어서 하나님의 약속을 붙입니다. "내가 결코 너를 떠나지 않겠고, 결코 너를 버리지 않겠다." 만족의 근거가 내 통장 잔고가 아니라, 하나님이 함께하신다는 약속이라는 것입니다.

그리고 8절에서 이렇게 말합니다. "예수 그리스도께서는 어제도 오늘도 영원히 같은 분이십니다." 앞에서 나열한 모든 것들 — 사랑하고, 대접하고, 기억하고, 만족하고 — 이것이 가능한 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 세상이 바뀌고, 상황이 바뀌고, 사람들이 바뀌어도 변하지 않는 분이 계신다는 것입니다. 그 분을 붙들고 있기 때문에 흔들리는 세상 안에서도 계속할 수 있다는 것입니다.

마지막으로 15절에 "그러므로 우리는 예수를 통하여 항상 하나님께 찬양의 제사를 드립시다. 이것은 그의 이름을 고백하는 입술의 열매입니다." 찬양이 제사라고 합니다. 예배가 특별한 장소에서, 특별한 형식으로만 드려지는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 일상의 언어로, 일상의 자리에서 드려지는 것이라는 것입니다.

요즘 일상이 예배가 되는 삶이 어떤 것인지를 자주 생각합니다. 예수동행, 즉 주님이 늘 함께하십니다! 이 고백을 붙들고 형제를 사랑하고, 나그네를 대접하고, 갇힌 자를 기억하고, 지금 가진 것에 감사하는 것. 이것이 입술의 열매이고, 이것이 찬양의 제사라는 뜻이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 교회 안에서만 드리는 예배가 아니라, 날마다 주님과 동행하는 삶.. 이런 삶에 대해서 이야기하고 기대하고 있습니다.

지난주 토요일에 뉴콰이어 25년 여정의 마지막 공연을 다녀왔습니다. 긴시간 헌신하며 함께해온 이명희 집사님, 이경태 권사님, 장태욱 집사님 수고하셨습니다.

어제도 오늘도 같은 분이 함께하시기 때문에, 우리는 오늘도 계속할 수 있습니다.

1. 여름이 시작된것 같습니다. 계절이 바뀌면서, 방학이 시작되면서 여행을 가는 교우들이 건강히 다녀올수 있도록 기도해주세요.

2. 이 번주 목요일에 대한미국 VS 체코 경기를 함께 보려고 합니다. 축구보다도 함께하는 즐거움에 대한 기대입니다. 이런 기대가 좋은 열매로 이어질 것입니다.

3. Untiy 수련회가 오늘 주일 부터 시작됩니다. 건강히 잘 다녀올수 있도록, 그리고 아이들이 많은 은혜받을 수 있도록, 준비한 분들의 손길이 감사가 넘치도록 기도해주세요.

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." (Hebrews 13:8)

This is the final chapter of Hebrews. The long theological argument is over, and now comes the practical life of it. Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Show hospitality to strangers. Remember those in prison. Honor marriage. Keep your lives free from the love of money. Reading through it, I kept losing track of whether this was a letter written two thousand years ago or something written for me this morning.

Verse 1 opens with a challenge. Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. Keep on — not start. The community reading this letter was already doing it. The word is don't stop. They had likely been through persecution, had been scattered, and caring for one another was becoming a burden. Into that exhaustion, the word comes: keep going. Not a grand new beginning — just don't let go of what you have already been doing.

Verse 2 is familiar, and yet in a time when we have become so guarded about opening our lives to strangers, it cuts deeper than usual. Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. This is the Abraham story — the three visitors at the oaks of Mamre, welcomed in the heat of the day. But what the writer of Hebrews wants to say is not that good hospitality earns an angelic encounter. It is that you never know who is standing in front of you. Because you cannot know, do not be careless.

Verse 5 gets to money. Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have. Content with what you have. Easy to say, hard to live. The human heart always seems to want a little more. But right alongside that instruction, Hebrews attaches a promise: Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. The basis for contentment is not the balance in our accounts — it is the promise that God is with us.

And then verse 8: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Everything listed before this — loving, welcoming, remembering, being content — this is why it is all possible. The world changes. Circumstances change. People change. But there is One who does not. Because we are holding onto him, we can keep going even inside a world that keeps shifting.

Finally, verse 15: Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise — the fruit of lips that openly profess his name. Praise as sacrifice. Worship is not something offered only in a special place, in a particular format. It is offered in the language of everyday life, in the ordinary places of every day. Walking with Jesus — the Lord is always with us. Holding that confession and then loving the person beside us, welcoming the stranger, remembering those who are forgotten, giving thanks for what we already have. That is the fruit of the lips. That is the sacrifice of praise. Not worship that happens only inside a church building, but a life walked daily with the Lord — that is the kind of life I keep thinking about and hoping for.

Last Saturday, I attended the final performance of New Choir's 25-year journey. To Deaconess Myunghee Lee, Elder Kyungtae Lee, and Deacon Taewook Jang — thank you for your long years of faithful dedication. It has been a beautiful run.

Reflection

Because the One who was with us yesterday is the same One with us today, we can keep going.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Summer feels like it has arrived. As the season turns and vacation time begins, please pray for safe and healthy travels for all who are heading out.

2. This Thursday we are getting together to watch Korea vs. Czech Republic. More than the soccer itself, it is the joy of being together that I am looking forward to. That kind of expectation tends to bear good fruit.

3. The Unity Retreat begins this Sunday. Please pray that everyone comes home healthy, that the students receive an abundance of grace, and that all those who worked so hard to prepare it would feel deep gratitude overflowing in their hearts.
