Hebrews 2:5–9, Thursday, June 18, 히브리서 2:5-9, 6월18일 목요일

"오직 우리가 천사들보다 잠시 동안 못하게 하심을 입은 자 곧 죽음의 고난 받으심으로 말미암아 영광과 존귀로 관을 쓰신 예수를 보니" (히 2:9a, 새번역)

히브리서가 시편 8편을 인용합니다. "사람이 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 생각하시며, 인자가 무엇이기에 주께서 그를 돌보시나이까." 다윗이 밤하늘을 바라보면서 쓴 시입니다. 별들을 보면서, 이 광대한 우주 안에 사람이 무엇이기에 하나님이 돌보시는지를 묻는 것입니다. 경이로움에서 나온 질문입니다. 두려움이 아니라, 감사에 가까운 질문입니다.

그런데 히브리서가 이 시편을 가져와서 전혀 다른 방향으로 읽습니다. 다윗은 사람에 대해 이야기했는데, 히브리서는 이것이 예수님에 관한 이야기라고 합니다. "잠시 동안 천사들보다 못하게 하심을 입은 자." 예수님이 이 땅에 오신 것이 잠시 동안 낮아지신 것이라는 것입니다. 하늘의 영광을 내려놓고, 사람의 몸을 입으시고, 죽기까지 낮아지신 것.

"잠시 동안"이라는 의미는 예수님의 낮아지심이 영원한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 잠시였다는 것입니다. 그 잠시의 낮아지심이 죽음의 고난으로 이어졌고, 그 고난 끝에 영광과 존귀의 관을 쓰셨다는 것입니다. 낮아지심이 목적이 아니라 통로였다는 의미겠죠.

9절에서 히브리서가 이 모든 것의 이유를 말합니다. "하나님의 은혜로 말미암아 모든 사람을 위하여 죽음을 맛보려 하심이라." 모든 사람을 위하여. 예수님이 죽음을 맛보신 것이 자신을 위한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 모든 사람을 위한 것이었습니다. 내가 그 모든 사람 안에 있다는 것입니다.

"죽음을 맛보려 하심"이라는 표현이 특이합니다. 죽음을 맛보셨다는 것입니다. 경험하셨다는 것입니다. 멀리서 보신 것이 아니라, 직접 그 안으로 들어가셨다는 것입니다. 두려움도 아시고, 고통도 아시고, 버려지는 것도 아신다는 것입니다. 그래서 히브리서가 계속해서 예수님을 우리의 대제사장으로 이야기하는 것입니다. 우리가 경험하는 것을 직접 경험하신 분이 우리를 위해 간구하신다는 것입니다.

요즘 지치는 순간이 있습니다. 수련회를 마치고 돌아온 몸이 아직 제자리를 찾지 못하고 있습니다. 피곤한 것 같은데 잠이 잘 안 오고, 해야 할 것들은 쌓여 있고, 어딘가 빈 것 같은 느낌. 컴퓨터 충전에 계속 문제가 생기고, 서둘로 교회에 왔더니, 새벽부터 장로님과 권사님이 교회 가든을 다 정리해놓으셨습니다.

피곤함과 생각한대로 잘 되지 않는다는 약간의 짜증이 사라지고, 헌신과 수고에 감사한 마음이 들었습니다. 우리는 잠깐의 불편함에 불평을 쏟아내기 바쁜데, 주님은 일부러 그 길로 걸어가셨다고 합니다. 일부러 이른 아침에 교회 마당을 정리하고, 나무를 자르고 가든을 정리합니다. 못본척해도 그만인데, 그러지 않고 그 일을 묵묵히 해내십니다. 이런 상황에 저를 붙드는 연약함은 사라지고, 주님이 왜 그 일을 하셨는가?에 온전히 집중하게 됩니다. 만나는 분, 시간을 함께 나누는 분들을 통해 하나님은 더 깊은 곳을 바라보는 눈을 허락하시는 것 같습니다.

잠시 동안의 낮아지심이 영광으로 이어졌습니다. 지금 잠시 동안의 어려움이 그 끝이 아닐 수 있습니다. 예수님이 먼저 그 길을 걸어가셨고, 그 길의 끝을 보여주셨습니다.

묵상

예수님은 우리가 경험하는 것을 직접 맛보셨습니다. 그분이 아시기 때문에, 우리는 혼자가 아닙니다.

중보기도

1. 수련회를 다녀온 아이들이 허전하지 않고, 더 큰 기대와 하나님을 향한 열정이 가득하도록 기도해주세요. 그들이 꿈꾸는 것을 통해 함께 주님이 일하심을 고백하도록 기도해주세요.

"But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death." (Hebrews 2:9a)

Hebrews quotes Psalm 8. What is mankind that you are mindful of them, a son of man that you care for him? David wrote this looking up at the night sky. Staring at the stars, asking why God would bother with human beings inside such a vast universe. It is a question born from wonder — not fear, but something closer to gratitude.

Hebrews takes that psalm and reads it in an entirely unexpected direction. David was writing about humanity — but Hebrews says this is actually about Jesus. Made lower than the angels for a little while. Jesus coming to this earth was a descent, a deliberate lowering. Setting aside heavenly glory, taking on human flesh, going all the way down to death.

For a little while. That phrase matters. The lowering was not permanent. It was for a season. And that season of lowering led through the suffering of death — and on the other side of that suffering, he was crowned with glory and honor. The lowering was not the point. It was the passage.

Verse 9 gives the reason for all of it. So that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. For everyone. Not for himself. For every person. I am included in that everyone.

Taste death. That is an unusual way to put it. He tasted it — experienced it from the inside. Not observed from a distance, but entered into directly. He knows what fear feels like. He knows what pain feels like. He knows what it is to be forsaken. This is why Hebrews keeps coming back to Jesus as our high priest — the one who has personally experienced what we go through is the one interceding for us.

These days I have been feeling the tiredness. My body hasn't found its footing again since coming back from the retreat. Tired but can't sleep well, things piling up, a kind of hollowness sitting somewhere inside. The laptop charger kept giving me trouble this morning, and I rushed to church feeling a little frayed at the edges — only to find that the Elder and the Deaconess had been there since early morning, quietly working through the church garden, clearing and trimming and putting everything in order.

The fatigue and the low-grade irritation at things not going smoothly — it just left. Gratitude replaced it. We are so quick to complain about small inconveniences, and here is Jesus who deliberately walked toward suffering. And here are these two, out in the garden before anyone else arrived, doing the work that no one would notice if they didn't do it — and doing it anyway, without a word. In moments like that, whatever was pulling at me fades, and I find myself fully focused on the question of why Jesus did what he did. Through the people we encounter, through the hours we share with others, God seems to give us eyes that can see further in.

The temporary lowering led to glory. The difficulty of right now may not be where the story ends. Jesus walked that road first — and showed us where it comes out.

Reflection

Jesus tasted what we experience. Because he knows, we are not alone.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Please pray that the students coming home from the retreat don't land in emptiness — but in greater expectation and a deeper hunger for God. Pray that through what they are dreaming, the Lord's work among them becomes a shared confession.
