"보혜사 곧 아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실 성령 그분이 너희에게 모든 것을 가르치고 내가 너희에게 말한 모든 것을 생각나게 하리라" (요 14:26, 새번역)

예수님이 떠나시기 전날 밤에 이야기입니다. 제자들과 마지막 식사를 하시고, 앞으로 일어날 일들을 말씀하시는 자리입니다. 분위기가 무거웠겠죠. 예수님이 떠난다고 하시니, 제자들은 불안하고 당황스러웠을 것입니다.

마지막 자리에 "보혜사." 낯선 단어를 말씀하십니다. 헬라어로 파라클레토스입니다. 곁에서 부르는 자, 도움을 주기 위해 곁에 있는 자라는 뜻입니다. 법정에서는 변호인을 가리키기도 했습니다. 예수님이 떠나시고 나면, 곁에서 변호해주고, 도와주고, 함께 있어줄 분을 보내신다는 것입니다. 혼자 두지 않으신다는 것입니다.

성령이 하시는 일이 두 가지라고 합니다. 가르치는 것과 생각나게 하는 것입니다. 이 두 가지가 비슷해 보이지만 다릅니다. 가르치는 것은 새로운 것을 알게 하는 것이고, 생각나게 하는 것은 이미 들은 것을 다시 살아나게 하는 것입니다. 성령은 우리에게 처음 보는 것만 가져오시는 것이 아니라, 이미 받았던 것을 필요한 순간에 다시 꺼내주신다는 것입니다.

살다 보면 이미 알고 있는 것인데 막막한 순간이 있습니다. 분명히 들었고, 분명히 믿었던 것인데, 그 순간에는 생각이 나지 않는 것. 두렵고 당황스러운 순간에 말씀이 증발해버리는 것 같은 경험. 그런데 성령이 하시는 일이 바로 그것이라는 것입니다. 내가 기억하지 못하는 순간에 기억나게 하시는 것. 내가 꺼내지 못하는 순간에 꺼내주시는 것입니다.

불현듯 기억못하는 것을 기억나게 해주신다는 의미보다는, 마땅히 필요한 것을 할 수 있도록 안내해주신다는 의미인듯합니다. 이런 경험이 있죠. 잘 몰랐는데 지나고 보면 생각보다 지혜롭게 말을 건넸다거나, 하는 경험은 우리를 도우시는 분이 계시다는 생각이 들때가 있는데 이런 도움이 보혜사 성령을 통해 주어지는 것이라는 것입니다.

그러니 말씀을 읽는 것이 중요합니다. 성령이 생각나게 하시려면, 먼저 들어가 있어야 합니다. 창고에 없는 것은 꺼낼 수 없습니다. 오늘 아침 이 말씀 앞에 잠깐 앉아있는 것이 그 창고를 채우는 일입니다. 지금은 별로 와닿지 않더라도, 필요한 순간에 성령이 꺼내 주실 것입니다.

"아버지께서 내 이름으로 보내실." 예수님의 이름으로 보내신다는 것입니다. 성령은 예수님과 연결된 분이라는 것입니다. 성령을 통해 예수님이 계속 우리와 함께 계신다는 것입니다. 떠나셨지만 떠나지 않으신 것입니다.

한국에 오셨던 분들이 잘 도착했다고 연락이 왔습니다. 짧은 시간이지만, 긴 여운이 남습니다. 그냥 좋은 시간이었어가 아니라, 나름 교회안에 이와 비슷한 분위기를 만들어야겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 성령은 이렇게 우리를 새롭게 이끌어 가시는것 같습니다.

묵상

성령은 우리가 기억하지 못하는 순간에, 필요한 말씀을 꺼내주시는 분입니다.

중보기도

1. 이번 주일부터 찬양팀과 방송팀을 새롭게 운영합니다. 하나님께 온전히 예배드리는 은혜가 가득하도록 기도해주세요.

2. 예수동행운동이라는 용어가 어색하죠. 영성일기라는것은 사실 교회전통에서 자주 등장하는 기도방식이고, 삶을 매일 매일 하나님께로 나아가기 위해 노력하는 중요한 방식중에 하나였는데, 용어가 우리에게 많은 선입관을 갖게 합니다. 그런데 우리들이 매일 매일 들어왔던 이야기에요. 그래서 열심을 내서 교회에 안내하려고 합니다.

"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." (John 14:26)

This is the night before Jesus leaves. He has shared a final meal with his disciples and is speaking about what is coming. The atmosphere must have been heavy. Jesus is saying he is going away, and the disciples are unsettled and confused.

And in that final gathering, Jesus uses an unfamiliar word: Advocate. In Greek, Paraclete — the one who is called to come alongside, the one who is present to help. In a legal setting, it referred to a defense attorney. When Jesus leaves, he is sending someone who will stand alongside them, defend them, help them, stay with them. He is not leaving them alone.

The Holy Spirit does two things, Jesus says. Teaching and reminding. These sound similar but they are different. Teaching brings new understanding. Reminding brings back to life what has already been heard. The Spirit does not only bring us things we have never seen before — the Spirit reaches into what we have already received and draws it out at exactly the moment we need it.

There are moments in life when you know something but still feel completely lost. You heard it clearly, you believed it genuinely — and yet in that moment, it simply isn't there. The experience of fear or confusion making the Word seem to evaporate. That is precisely what the Spirit does: bringing back what we cannot retrieve on our own, drawing out what we cannot reach in ourselves.

This is less about suddenly remembering a forgotten fact, and more about being guided to do what is needed in the moment. There are experiences like this — looking back on a conversation and realizing you spoke more wisely than you knew how to, wondering afterward where that came from. That kind of help, I think, is what the Advocate Spirit gives.

So reading the Word matters. For the Spirit to bring something back, it has to be inside us first. You cannot take something out of a storehouse that was never put in. Sitting with this passage for a few minutes this morning is part of filling that storehouse. Even if it doesn't land deeply right now, the Spirit will draw it out when the time comes.

Whom the Father will send in my name. Sent in Jesus' name. The Spirit is connected to Jesus. Through the Spirit, Jesus continues to be with us. He left — and yet he did not leave.

Word came that our guests from Korea arrived home safely. It was a short visit, but it left something that lingers. Not just the feeling of a good time — it stirred something in me about creating that kind of atmosphere inside our own church. The Spirit seems to work like this: quietly leading us somewhere new, through the ordinary moments we almost overlook.

Reflection

The Holy Spirit is the one who brings out the Word we need, in the moments we cannot find it ourselves.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Starting this Sunday, we are relaunching our worship and media teams with a fresh start. Please pray that our worship would be full of grace — offered wholly to God.

2. The phrase "Walking with Jesus Movement" might feel a little unfamiliar. And "spiritual journal" carries its own preconceptions. But the practice itself has deep roots in church tradition — a way of drawing near to God day by day that has shaped believers across the centuries. It's really something we've been hearing about all along. So we want to help our church embrace it wholeheartedly, and we're going to do our best to make that introduction well.
