"아버지께서 아들을 사랑하사 만물을 다 그의 손에 주셨으니" (요 3:35, 새번역)

오늘 본문은 세례 요한의 마지막 증언입니다. 요한의 제자들이 예수님 때문에 불안해합니다. 선생님, 사람들이 다 예수에게로 갑니다. 그런데 요한의 반응이 담담합니다. 오히려 기뻐합니다. "그는 흥하여야 하겠고 나는 쇠하여야 하리라." 이 말을 쉽게 할 수 있는 사람이 얼마나 될까요. 자기 자리를 내어주는 것, 무대에서 내려오는 것, 그것도 기쁘게 그리 할 수 있는 것은 보기 드문닙다. 사촌이 땅을 사면 배가 아프다는 속담이 있는 이유가 있습니다.

요한이 이렇게 말할 수 있었던 것은 자기가 누구인지 알았기 때문입니다. 나는 신랑이 아니라 신랑의 친구라고 했습니다. 친구는 신랑을 위해 기뻐합니다. 자기가 주인공이 아니라는 것을 아는 사람은 흔들리지 않습니다. 비교당해도, 밀려나도, 사람들이 떠나가도 마땅히 그렇게 되는 것에 마음을 두고 있다면 무엇이 더 중요한지 알기 때문입니다.

그리고 오늘 본문 31절에서 이런 말이 나옵니다. "위로부터 오시는 이는 만물 위에 계시고." 요한이 말하려는 것의 핵심입니다. 예수님은 위로부터 오신 분이라는 것입니다. 땅에서 난 것은 땅에 속하고 땅의 것을 말하지만, 위로부터 오신 분은 그 차원이 다르다는 것입니다. 요한이 자신을 낮출 수 있었던 것은 예수님이 누구신지 알았기 때문입니다. 비교의 문제가 아니었습니다. 차원이 다른 분이라는 것을 알았기 때문입니다.

"그가 보고 들은 것을 증언하되 그의 증언을 받는 자가 없도다." 이 말이 좀 쓸쓸하게 들립니다. 직접 보고 들은 것을 말하는데, 받아들이는 사람이 없다는 것입니다. 진리가 언제나 환영받는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 옳은 말을 해도, 정확한 것을 말해도, 받아들여지지 않는 순간이 있습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 증언하는 것. 그것이 요한이 한 일이었습니다.

35절에서 반전이 옵니다. "아버지께서 아들을 사랑하사 만물을 다 그의 손에 주셨으니." 만물을 다 그의 손에 주셨다는 것입니다. 예수님의 손 안에 없는 것이 없다는 것입니다. 요즘처럼 세상이 어지럽고, 방향이 잡히지 않는 것 같고, 내 힘으로 어떻게 할 수 없는 것들이 많은 시절에 이 말씀에서 우리들이 믿고 동행하는 분이 누구인지를 명확하게 드러내보입니다. 만물이 그의 손 안에 있다는 것. 내가 통제할 수 없는 것들이 방치된 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 그러니 불안해할 필요가 없습니다.

아침에 더워지기전에 교회 텃밭을 살피기 위해 교회에 일찍 나왔습니다. 텃밭에 심은 씨앗들이 싹을 틔우서 뭉쳐있는 것을 골고루 다시 심어주고 혹시 다른 문제가 없는지를 살피고 하는 시간도 만만치 않습니다. 4박스정도는 아직 아무것도 심겨지지 않아서 무엇을 심을지 고민하고 있습니다. 깻잎과 파를 심으면 어떨까 하는데 아이디어 있으시면 심으시기만하면 제가 아침마다 돌보도록하겠습니다.

황폐한 곳에 마음을 써서 생명이 일어나게 하는 손길도 자기가 했으니 자기가 가지려는 마음이 아니라 함께 나누고, 마음을 비워서 우리에게 제공하려는 마음은 참 복되다는 생각이 들었습니다. 이런것들이 다 하늘의 힘이 아닐까? 라는 생각으로 오늘 하루를 시작합니다.

늦은 아침 묵상은 당분간 지속될겁니다.

자기가 누구인지 아는 사람은, 누군가가 흥해도 흔들리지 않습니다.

"The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands." (John 3:35)

This is John the Baptist's final testimony. His disciples are unsettled. Teacher, everyone is going to Jesus. But John's response is unhurried. He is actually glad. He must become greater; I must become less. How many people can say that easily? Stepping aside, coming down from the stage, and doing it with joy — that is rare. There's a Korean saying: when your cousin buys land, your stomach hurts. It exists for a reason.

John could say this because he knew who he was. I am not the groom, he said — I am the friend of the groom. The friend rejoices for the groom. A person who knows they are not the main character doesn't get shaken. When comparisons come, when they get pushed aside, when people leave — if your heart is already settled on what is supposed to happen, you know what matters most.

Then in verse 31, this: The one who comes from above is above all. This is the heart of what John is saying. Jesus comes from above. What is born of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of earthly things — but the one who comes from above operates in a different dimension entirely. John could lower himself because he knew who Jesus was. It wasn't a matter of comparison. It was a matter of recognizing someone on a completely different level.

He testified to what he has seen and heard, but no one accepts his testimony. There's something quietly lonely about that line. Speaking from direct experience — and no one receives it. Truth is not always welcomed. You can say the right thing, say it accurately, and still not be received. And yet John kept bearing witness anyway. That is what he did.

Then verse 35 arrives like a turn. The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands. Everything. There is nothing outside the hands of Jesus. In a time like this one — when the world feels disordered, when direction is hard to find, when so much is beyond our ability to control — this verse makes something clear: it shows us exactly who we are walking with. Everything is in his hands. The things I cannot control are not abandoned. They are held. So there is no need to be afraid.

I came to church early this morning to check on the garden before the heat set in. The seeds we planted have started sprouting — little clusters of seedlings bunched together that need to be thinned out and replanted with more space. There's enough to tend to just in that. Four of the boxes still have nothing in them, and I've been wondering what to plant. I'm thinking perilla and green onions — if anyone has ideas, just plant them and I'll water them every morning on my rounds.

It struck me, watching all of this, that the hands doing this work — caring for a bare patch of ground, coaxing life out of it, not to claim it but to share it, emptying themselves so others can enjoy it — those hands carry something from above. That thought is how I'm starting today.

And for what it's worth — even in Korea, they say it's hard to get people to come to these kinds of seminars these days. But they also say that laypeople's hunger is deeper than it used to be.
