"예수께서 기도하시러 산으로 나가사 밤이 새도록 하나님께 기도하시고" (눅 6:12, 새번역)

예수님이 산으로 올라가십니다. 혼자서. 밤새도록 기도하십니다. 다음 날 아침에 제자들을 부르셔서 열두 명을 사도로 세우십니다.

열두 제자를 세우는 것은 작은 일이 아닙니다. 이 사람들이 앞으로 복음을 들고 세상으로 나갈 사람들입니다. 교회의 기초가 될 사람들입니다. 그 결정을 앞두고 예수님이 하신 것이 회의가 아닙니다. 전략 기획이 아닙니다. 밤새 기도입니다.

아침에 컴퓨터 베터리가 방전되서 이리저리 충전기를 찾아 헤매이다 늦게 묵상을 쓰고 있습니다. 어제 밤이 소위 리트릿의 하이라이트 마지막 집회, 마지막 찬양, 아이들은 잠을 자려하지 않고, 아쉬운 시간을 붙드느라 잠을 제대로 자지 않은 시간을 통과하여 아침 예배를 준비하고 있는 중에 짬을 내서 묵상을 쓰고 있습니다.

한 아이에게 빌린 랩탑 충전기를 어디에 둔지 몰라 이런 방법 저런 방법을 생각하다 간신히 충전을 하고는 이렇게 글을 쓰면서, 역시나 준비하는 것, 그리고 마련된 대안을 여지없이 실패하고 늦게나마 간신히 이렇게 묵상을 쓰는 것에 많은 생각을 하게 합니다.

계획은 생각하고 준비하는 것으로 끝나는 것이 아니라, 기도와 깊은 주님과의 동행을 노력하면서 완성되어 가는 것 같습니다.

올해 유니티 수련회는 준비하는 청년들이 직장인임에도 불구하고 시간을 쪼개서 목회자들이 채우지 못한것을 든든히 채워서 은혜롭게 수련회를 준비했습니다. 하나 하나 세심한 손길이 수련회를 보내는동안 느껴졌습니다. 어쩌면 몸만 함께온 저로서는 이들이 세워가고 있는 아이들을 위한 거룩한 자리에 하나님이 어떻게 이렇게 역사하시는가에 대한 경이로움을 느끼며 감사하고 있습니다.

컴퓨터 충전때문 허둥대는 저의 모습과 달리 이들은 잘 준비하기 위해 마음을 쓰고, 자신의 시간을 헐어 매년 어쩌면 자기와 직접적으로 영향이 없는 순전히 자기가 경험한것을 아이들에게도 경험케하자는 마음으로 잘 준비했습니다.

기도의 힘을 절실히 느끼고, 또한 함께 중보기도로 동행한 성도님들께 감사드립니다.

묵상

중요한 결정 앞에서 예수님은 먼저 기도하셨습니다. 기도가 먼저입니다.

중보기도

1. 수련회를 마치고 돌아가는 아이들 마음에 허전함이 있을 겁니다. 이 허전함이 찬양과 말씀으로 채워지기를 기대해봅니다. 3일여정을 보내면서 큰 은혜를 주신 하나님께 감사드립니다.

2. 열린교회 사역과 비전을 위해서 기도해주세요! 좀더 든든히 교회가 세워지고, 모든 부서가 하나님의 은혜로 잘 채워져가고 세워지기를 기도해주세요. 기도가 우선입니다.

"Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God." (Luke 6:12)

Jesus goes up the mountain. Alone. He prays through the night. In the morning he calls his disciples together and appoints twelve of them as apostles.

That sequence is what I keep coming back to in today's passage. Before one of the most significant decisions of his ministry, Jesus does not call a meeting. He does not draft a strategic plan. He prays through the night.

Appointing the twelve is not a small thing. These are the people who will carry the gospel into the world. The people on whom the church will be built. And the thing Jesus does before that decision is spend the night alone with God on a mountain.

I am writing this devotional late this morning. My laptop battery died and I spent a good while scrambling around trying to find a charger — borrowing one from one of the students, losing track of where I put it, trying one thing and then another, until finally managing to get enough charge to sit down and write. Last night was the highlight of the retreat — the final gathering, the last worship set, the kids refusing to sleep, holding onto every last minute of the experience. Not much sleep was had. And now, in the middle of preparing for the morning service, I am stealing a few minutes to get this written.

Fumbling around for a charger this morning, it struck me: planning and preparation don't complete themselves. They are finished — made whole — through prayer and the kind of deep walking with the Lord that has to be chosen, again and again, even when things don't go as expected.

This year's Unity Retreat was carried by young adults who have full-time jobs and still carved out their time to fill every gap the pastoral staff couldn't cover. The care in the details was felt all the way through. I came mostly just showing up with my body — and standing here watching what they have built for these kids, I find myself genuinely in awe of how God moves through people like this. Grateful doesn't quite cover it.

While I was scrambling over a dead battery, they were giving their time, their energy, their attention — not because it directly benefits them, but simply because they experienced something here and want the next generation to experience it too. That is what faithful preparation looks like.

I feel the power of prayer deeply right now. And I am grateful for every person who has been walking alongside this retreat in intercession.

Reflection

Before the important decisions, Jesus prayed first. Prayer comes first.

Intercessory Prayer

1. The students heading home will carry a quiet emptiness with them — that feeling when something good ends. May that emptiness be filled with worship and the Word. We are deeply grateful to God for the grace of these three days.

2. Please pray for the ministries and vision of Yeolin Church — that the church would be built up more firmly, and that every ministry would be filled and established in God's grace. Prayer comes first.
