"정의가 이길 때까지, 그는 상한 갈대를 꺾지 않고, 꺼져 가는 심지를 끄지 않을 것이다." (마 12:20, 새번역)

집을 비운사이에 강아지가 먹어서는 안될걸 먹었나봅디다. 기력을 잃고 운동능력이 떨어져 있는 개를 안고는 동물병원을 찾아갔습니다. 응급이라 자리가 없어서 안내에 따라 제법 먼곳을 운전해서 갔더니, 병원이 사람병원 뺨칠만큼 크고 시스템이 고급입니다. 의사뿐만 아니라 모든 사람들이 친절하고, 이런 저런 이유로 병원을 찾은 견주들이 힘없이 누워있는 자신들의 애완견과 함께 걱정스럽게들 앉아 있습니다.

병원인데 공간이 탁트여서 모든 진료실을 한눈에 볼수 있고, 애완견들은 어디든 앉을 수 있게해놓았습니다. 주인들이 머물 편의시설도 좋고, 화장실을 사용하는데, 세심한 배려에 놀랐습니다. 그냥 동물병원인데 많은 아이디어와 경험을 녹여서 전혀 다른 차원의 병원을 디자인 한것입니다.

우리들에게 익숙하고 알고 있던것과는 다른 완전히 다른 모양,

예수님이 복음을 전한 것또한 익숙한 것과는 거리가 먼, 새로운 것들을 들고 오셨다는 생각이 들었습니다. 오늘 본문에도 보면 전혀 다른 차원의 이야기를 하십니다. 눈에 띄는 것을 좋아하는 기존의 종교지도자들과는 다르게 예수님은 조용히 큰일을 하십니다. 그리고 소문이 나는 것을 경계합니다. "상한갈대를 꺽지 않고, 껴져가는 등불을 밝히신다"는 이사야 말씀의 인용은 예수님이 우리에게 가르키는 방향은 이기는 방법이 아니라 고치는 방법에 대해서 이야기하십니다.

병원을 나오면서 결제한 금액은 예상을 훨씬 뛰어넘는 액수였어도, 이만한 서비스면 그럴만하다는 생각이 들었습니다.

교회는 뻔한 방향에서 세워지는 공간이 아닌것 같습니다. 세상도 나름의 방식으로 감독과 탁월함 또는 특별함을 드러내기 위해 노력하는데, 교회는 특별하다는 의미가 비교의 용어가 아니라, 가장 보편적이고 탁월한 사랑을 드러내기 위해 노력해야한다는 것을 깊이 묵상해 봅니다.

주님은 우리를 통해 하나님의 특별한 일을 하기원하십니다. 뻔한 일에 허우적거리는 존재에서 세상과 다른 방향으로 드러나지는 거룩함에 힘을 쓰는 존재...이런 기대로 하루를 시작합니다.

무엇이 우리를 다르다고 이야기하는 것 같습니까? 정말로 그런게 있습니까?

1. 9월4일(금)-7일(월)까지 청년연합수련회가 저희 교회에서 있어요 작년에도 했었는데 이번에는 더 많은 교회들이 참석한다고 합니다. 다른 교회들은 청년이 아니라 청장년들이 참석하는것 같습니다. 결혼하고 아이들도 있는 분들이 수련회에 함께합니다. 교회에서 자는게 아니라 집에서 다녀가는 수련회고 하루정도 참석해도 된다고 해요, 위해서 기도해주세요

"He will not break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering wick until he has brought justice through to victory." (Matthew 12:20)

While we were out, our dog apparently got into something she shouldn't have. By the time we noticed, she had lost her energy and couldn't move the way she normally does. I carried her to the animal hospital — but they were full, no emergency slots available, and directed us to another clinic quite a distance away. When we finally arrived, the place was nothing like what I expected. It was the size of a proper hospital, the systems were polished, and every single staff member was genuinely kind. In the waiting area, other pet owners sat quietly with their limp, tired animals in their laps, all of us wearing the same worried expression.

What struck me was the space itself. Open floor plan, every exam room visible at a glance, animals allowed to settle wherever they felt comfortable. Good facilities for the owners too — and then I walked into the restroom and was surprised by how much thought had gone into even that. This was an animal clinic, technically, but someone had taken everything familiar about what a clinic is and redesigned it from the ground up into something altogether different.

Something entirely unlike what you'd expect.

That's what came to mind reading today's passage. When Jesus brought the gospel, it wasn't a polished version of what already existed. It was something from a completely different register. The religious leaders of his day wanted visibility, prominence, recognition — and Jesus moved in the opposite direction. He healed quietly. He asked people not to spread the word. The quotation from Isaiah says it plainly: he will not break a bruised reed, will not snuff out a smoldering wick. Jesus isn't teaching a strategy for winning. He's showing a method for healing.

The bill when we left was considerably more than I'd anticipated. But walking out, I thought — for that level of care, it made sense.

The church, I keep thinking, should not be a predictable place. The world has its own ways of pursuing excellence and distinction — its own designs for standing out. But what makes the church different shouldn't be comparison-based. It should be something else entirely: the most universal, most costly love made visible. Not special in the sense of superior, but special in the sense of genuinely other. That's what I find myself sitting with this morning.

The Lord wants to do something through us that doesn't look like the obvious thing. To move from being creatures tangled up in the predictable, toward a holiness that shows up differently from the world around us. That expectation is how I want to begin today.

1. The Young Adult and Young Family Retreat is being hosted at our church from September 4 (Friday) through September 7 (Monday). More churches are participating this year than last, and it sounds like several are bringing young married couples with children — not just college students. It's a commuter-style retreat, so coming for even one day is welcome. Please pray for it.

2. Please pray for Dinner Church — it's time to gather again and find our momentum. ^^
