너희는 ‘예’ 할 때에는 ‘예’라는 말만 하고, ‘아니오’ 할 때에는 ‘아니오’라는 말만 하여라. 이보다 지나치는 것은 악에서 나오는 것이다.” (마5:37)

오늘 읽은 본문은 예수님은 우리의 행동 이전에 그 행동이 시작되는 마음의 자리을 살필것을 이야기하십니다. 겉으로 드러난 윤리의 문제를 넘어서, 내면 깊은 곳에서 형성되는 욕망과 진실의 방향에 대해서 묻는 것이겠죠.

간음하지 말라는 계명은 단지 육체적 행위의 문제를 금하는 말씀이 아닙니다. 예수님은 이미 마음에서 시작된 시선과 욕망, 그리고 그 방향성이 하나님 앞에서 어떠한지를 물으십니다. 겉으로 아무문제 없이 율법을 잘 지키며 스스로를 의롭다고 여기는 자들에게 묻는 질문이라고 볼수 있습니다. 당당해보이며 다른 이들을 정죄하는 그 삶의 내면도 그러한가?를 묻는 것입니다. 죄는 어느 순간 갑자기 나타나는 것이 아니라, 오래 머문 마음에서 자라날수 있으니 아직 삶에서 드러나지 않았다고 스스로 의로운척 거기에 다른 이들을 정죄하는 율법주의적 행위에 대해 경종을 올리는 말씀입니다.

또한 맹세하지 말라는 가르침은 말을 더 강하게 만들라는 요구가 아닙니다. 오히려 우리의 말이 추가적인 장치 없이도 신뢰받을 수 있을 만큼, 삶 전체가 진실 위에 서 있느냐를 묻는 말씀입니다. 예수님은 말의 형식보다, 말을 떠받치고 있는 삶의 무게를 보십니다.

예수님은 이렇게 말씀하시는 것처럼 들립니다. “너의 마음이 이미 정직하다면, 너의 말은 설명을 필요로 하지 않는다. 너의 삶이 진실하다면, 너의 말은 스스로 증거가 된다.” 그래서 예수님은 ‘더 잘 보이게 말하라’고 하시지 않고, ‘있는 그대로 말하라’고 하십니다.

우리는 종종 겉으로는 단정해 보이지만 마음은 분주하고, 말로는 확신에 차 있지만 내면은 흔들리는 상태로 살아갑니다. 그래서 예수님은 행동을 고치기 전에 먼저 시선을 돌리라고 하십니다. 손보다 먼저 마음을, 입보다 먼저 내면을 바라보라고 부르십니다.

이 아침, 내가 지키고 있는 선한 모습보다 하나님 앞에서 정직하게 드러낼 수 있는 나의 마음은 어떠한지 스스로에게 묻습니다. 오늘 내가 하는 말은 설명입니까, 아니면 삶입니까. 나의 ‘예’와 ‘아니오’는 두려움에서 나온 말입니까, 아니면 하나님을 향한 신뢰에서 비롯된 고백입니까.

묵상

말속에 설명이 필요한 이야기들 뿐인가요? 설명이 필요없이 삶으로 드러나는 것인가요?

1. 봄소식이 들려오고 있습니다. 교회마당에 꽃이 피기 시작했어요. 봄기운에 교회도 다시 새로운 생명을 피워내듯 열매로 채워지는 열린교회를 위해서 기도해주세요.

2. 열린교회에서 진행하는 모든 영성프로그램을 위해서 기도해주세요. 성경통독반과 아침묵상 그리고 곧 시작할 성경공부를 위해서 기도해주세요.

“Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.”(Matthew 5:37)

In today’s passage, Jesus teaches us to examine not first our actions, but the place of the heart where those actions begin. He moves beyond outward ethical behavior and asks about the direction of our deepest desires and the truth being formed within us.

The commandment “You shall not commit adultery” is not merely a prohibition against a physical act. Jesus asks about the gaze and the desire that already take shape in the heart, and about the direction they are taking before God. This can be understood as a question addressed to those who outwardly keep the law well and regard themselves as righteous. Jesus asks: Is the inner life truly as upright as it appears? To those who seem confident and are quick to judge others, He probes the condition of the heart beneath that appearance. Sin does not suddenly appear in a moment; it grows quietly in a heart where it has long been allowed to remain. Thus, Jesus warns against a legalistic posture that claims righteousness simply because sin has not yet become visible, while using the law to condemn others.

Likewise, the teaching not to swear oaths is not a demand to make our words stronger or more elaborate. Rather, it asks whether our lives stand so firmly on truth that our words can be trusted without any added guarantees. Jesus is less concerned with the form of our speech than with the weight of the life that supports it.

It is as if Jesus is saying, “If your heart is already honest, your words will need no explanation. If your life is true, your words will testify for themselves.” That is why He does not say, “Speak more convincingly,” but instead, “Speak plainly. Say what is.”

We often live lives that appear orderly on the outside while our hearts remain restless, and we speak with confidence while our inner selves are still wavering. That is why Jesus calls us, before correcting our actions, to redirect our gaze. Before the hand, He points to the heart; before the mouth, He calls us to examine the inner life.

This morning, I ask myself: beyond the good image I try to maintain, what is the condition of my heart that I can honestly reveal before God? Are the words I speak today explanations meant to protect myself, or are they expressions of a life being lived? Do my “yes” and my “no” come from fear, or are they confessions born out of trust in God?

Are my words filled with explanations that need to be defended,or do they reveal a life that speaks for itself without explanation?

Intercessory Prayer

1. We are beginning to hear the news of spring. Flowers are starting to bloom in the church courtyard. As creation awakens with new life, please pray that Yeolin Church may also be filled anew with life and bear abundant fruit.
