"주님, 나는 주님을 내 집으로 모셔들일 만한 자격이 없습니다. 그저 한 마디 말씀만 해주십시오. 그러면 내 종이 나을 것입니다." (마 8:8, 새번역)
오늘 본문에 두 사람이 등장합니다. 나병 환자와 백부장. 전혀 다른 사람들입니다. 나병 환자는 유대인이었을 것입니다. 백부장은 로마 군인입니다. 사회적 지위도 다르고, 민족도 다르고, 처한 상황도 다릅니다. 그런데 이 두 사람에게 공통점이 하나 있습니다. 예수님께 나아왔다는 것입니다.
나병 환자가 말합니다. "주님, 하고자 하시면, 나를 깨끗하게 해주실 수 있습니다." 고쳐달라는 말이 아닙니다. 하고자 하시면이라는 조건을 붙였습니다. 예수님의 뜻에 자신을 맡긴 것입니다.
백부장의 장면이 더 놀랍습니다. 로마 군인이 유대인 선생에게 무릎을 꿇는 것 자체가 이례적입니다. 그리고 하는 말이 8절입니다. "주님, 나는 주님을 내 집으로 모셔들일 만한 자격이 없습니다. 그저 한 마디 말씀만 해주십시오." 자격이 없다는 고백. 그런데 이 자격 없음이 믿음을 막지 않았습니다. 오히려 이 고백이 가장 큰 믿음으로 드러납니다.
예수님이 놀라셨다는 표현이 나옵니다. "나는 지금까지 이스라엘 사람 가운데서 아무에게서도 이런 믿음을 본 일이 없다." 예수님을 놀라게 한 사람이 이스라엘 사람이 아니었습니다. 로마 군인이었습니다.
놀라움은 가끔 예상치 못한곳에서 나옵니다.
트리니티 채플에 대한 문제를 나누었더니, 사무적으로만 이야기합니다. 안타까운 마음을 볼 수 없는 이들의 속내는 귀찮음이 묻어나 있습니다. 한가지씩 따지고 들려고 하다가, 우리에게 주신 하나님의 마음이 더 크다는 생각에 기분을 이야기하지 않고 정중한 태도를 유지하며 대화를 마무리했습니다. 이럴때 사람들은 착각합니다. 오히려 배려한것인데, 자기의 권위가 섣다고 생각하는 것이죠. 이런 관계는 희망이 없다고 볼수있지만 태도를 잘 지키면 언젠간 변화를 기대할 수 있다는 확신이 전한테 있습니다. 우리는 기분으로 세상을 대하는 사람들이 아니라, 그리스도인이라는 태도로 세상을 살아가는 존재이기때문입니다.
오늘 본문에 등장하는 두사람은 믿음의 방향을 드러내 보입니다. 내원하는 것이 아니라, 그리고 말씀 하시면 이루어진다는 확신. 우리는 이런 믿음을 드러내는 자들이라는 것을 기억해야합니다.
묵상
세상 똑똑하고 냉정한것은 정확한 선을 긋는대는 필요합니다. 하지만 우리들은 이런 선들을 넘어서는 자들이라는 것을 기억해야합니다.
중보기도
트리니티 채플을 이번주 주일(23일) 예배후 모여서 작업을 해야할것 같습니다. 그러면 월요일에 하울링과 관리업체가 와서 청소를 할것 같아요. 관리업체에서 깨진 유리는 나무로 막아놓았고, 더 안전하게 작업을 했다고 연락이 왔습니다. 연회에서는 저희교회 보험으로 파손처리를 할 수 있다고 하는데 확인해봐야겠습니다. 기도해주세요. 우리들의 목적은 여기서 예배하는 것입니다.
부목사님을 파송받아 한국에서 오시는 비자를 기다리고 있습니다. 모든 서류가 변호사에게 전달되었으니 곧 접수에 들어갈것 같습니다. 두주안에 결정이 되고, 한국에서 미국 대사관 인터뷰일정을 잡으면 비자가 나옵니다. 예상으로는 9월말쯤이 가능하지 않을까 생각이 듭니다. 기도해주세요.
"Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed." (Matthew 8:8)
Two people appear in today's passage. A man with leprosy and a Roman centurion. Completely different. One likely a Jew, one a Roman soldier. Different status, different ethnicity, different circumstances. But one thing in common — they both came to Jesus.
The man with leprosy says: Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean. Not a demand. Not even a direct request for healing. He placed a condition — if you are willing — and handed himself over to whatever Jesus chose. That is faith. Not insisting on a particular outcome, but entrusting yourself to the will of the one you are approaching.
The centurion's scene is even more striking. A Roman soldier kneeling before a Jewish teacher is already unusual. And then what he says — Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. Just say the word. A confession of unworthiness. And yet that very confession becomes the greatest expression of faith in the entire passage.
Jesus is amazed. I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. The person who amazed him was not one of his own people. It was a Roman soldier. Amazement tends to come from unexpected places.
That thought stayed with me, because something unexpected happened this week too — though in a less inspiring direction. When I raised the issues at Trinity Chapel, the response on the other end was purely procedural. No warmth, no genuine concern — just a tone of mild annoyance at being bothered. I started to push back on the specifics, and then something shifted in me. The sense that what God has given us is larger than this conversation. So I kept the tone measured, finished the exchange with courtesy, and let it go. People sometimes mistake that kind of restraint for weakness — as if your composure means their authority has prevailed. But I have a quiet confidence that holding the right posture, over time, produces change. Because we are not people who meet the world with our feelings first. We are people who meet the world with a posture shaped by being Christian.
The two people in today's passage point in the same direction. Not demanding. Not negotiating. Simply trusting that a word from Jesus is enough. That is the kind of faith we are meant to carry and show.
Reflection
Being shrewd and clear-eyed has its place — it is useful for drawing accurate lines. But we are called to be people who live beyond those lines.
Intercessory Prayer
It looks like we will need to gather at Trinity Chapel after worship this Sunday the 23rd to do some cleanup work ourselves. Then on Monday, the management company should come in for a proper cleaning. They've already boarded up the broken glass and made things more secure — they contacted us to confirm. The Annual Conference mentioned that the damage may be coverable under our church insurance, but that needs to be confirmed. Please pray. Our purpose there is to worship.
We are waiting on the visa for our incoming associate pastor from Korea. All documents have been delivered to the attorney, and the official filing should begin soon. A decision is expected within two weeks, and once the US Embassy in Korea schedules an interview, the visa should follow. We are hoping for something around late September. Please keep this in prayer.
