그리스도께서 이방 사람들을 복종하게 하시려고 나를 시켜서 이루어 놓으신 것 밖에는, 아무것도 감히 말하지 않겠습니다. 그 일은 말과 행동으로, (로마서 15:18)
바울이 자기 사역을 이야기하면서 한 가지를 분명히 합니다. 내가 한 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 그리스도께서 나를 통해 이루신 것이라는 것입니다. 예루살렘에서 일루리곤까지 두루 다니며 복음을 전한 사람이, 그 모든 것이 자기 것이 아니라고 말합니다. 이 고백이 쉬운 것이 아닙니다. 열심히 한 사람일수록 내 것이라는 마음이 생기기 마련이니까요.
그런데 바울이 자랑할 것이 있다면 그리스도 예수 안에서만이라고 합니다. 내 노력이나 내 결과가 아니라, 그리스도께서 나를 통해 하신 일을 자랑한다는 것입니다. 이것이 사역의 건강한 자세인 것 같습니다. 내가 한 것이라고 생각하는 순간, 결과에 흔들리기 시작합니다. 잘 되면 교만해지고, 안 되면 낙담합니다. 그런데 그리스도께서 하신 것이라는 고백이 자리잡으면, 결과보다 방향에 집중하게 됩니다.
20절에 바울은 이런 고백과 함께 이미 복음이 전해진 곳이 아니라, 아직 닿지 않은 곳을 향했다는 것입니다. 남이 닦아 놓은 터 위에 집을 짓지 않으려 했다는 것입니다. 개척자의 마음입니다. 익숙하고 편한 곳이 아니라, 아직 가지 않은 곳을 향하는 마음.
샌디에고 에서 오는 길이 가는 길에 비해 빨리 온것 같습니다. 시간은 같아도 느낌이 다르게 느껴지는 건 심리적인 시간이 다르기때문이겠죠. 동네에 들어왔때, 베이지역의 신선함이 느껴졌습니다. 이제는 익숙한 곳이 제 집, 고향처럼 느껴지는 것 같습니다. 이번 수양회에서 은퇴 목사님의 한마디가 오느내내 마음을 흔들어 놓았습니다. 매일 새벽마다 서부지역의 한인교회를 위해서 기도하신다는 말씀 그리고, 혼신을 다해 목회하는 목회자를 찾기 어렵다는 이야기.
바울은 자신을 하나님의 온전한 사역도구로 스스로를 고백하고 있습니다. 이 고백을 통해 교회가 세워졌습니다. 생각 마음 단순한 열심이 아니라 치열한 고백과 헌신 그리고 하나님의 인도하심으로

"I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obedience — by word and deed." (Romans 15:18)
As Paul describes his ministry, he makes one thing unmistakably clear: he is not claiming it as his own. What happened — from Jerusalem all the way to Illyricum, the gospel spreading across that entire expanse — was not Paul's doing. Christ accomplished it through him. That is a remarkable thing to say for someone who worked as hard as Paul did. The more a person pours into something, the more natural it feels to call it theirs.
And yet Paul says: if there is anything to boast about, it is only in Christ Jesus. Not the effort, not the results — but what Christ did through him. This seems to be the posture that keeps ministry healthy. The moment we start thinking of it as ours, we become hostage to outcomes. When things go well, pride creeps in. When they don't, we sink. But when the confession holds — that Christ is the one doing this through us — attention shifts from results to direction.
In verse 20, alongside that confession, Paul adds something else. He aimed for places where the gospel had not yet gone. He did not want to build on someone else's foundation. The heart of a pioneer — not toward the familiar and comfortable, but toward what hasn't been reached yet.
The drive back from San Diego felt faster than the drive down, even though the time was the same. Psychological time is different from clock time. When I turned into the neighborhood, something about the Bay Area air felt fresh and familiar — this place has become home in a way I didn't plan for. Throughout the retreat, one thing the retired pastor said kept working its way through me on the road: that he prays every early morning for Korean churches across the West Coast — and that ministers who give everything to their calling are becoming harder to find.
Paul confesses himself as a fully yielded instrument in God's hands. And through that confession, churches were built. Not casual enthusiasm, but fierce surrender — to his calling, to God's leading, and to something beyond himself.
