Romans 2:12–16, Thursday, July 9, 로마서 2:12-16, 7월9일 목요일

"하나님 앞에서는 율법을 듣는 사람이 의로운 사람이 아닙니다. 오직 율법을 실천하는 사람이라야 의롭게 될 것이기 때문입니다." (롬 2:13, 새번역)

율법에 대한 바울의 이야기는 본인이 그토록 신봉했던 율법에 대한 철저한 반성과 분석이 녹아져있는 것 같습니다. 아는 것이 아니라 실천하는 것이 의롭게 된다는 뜻은 결국 율법이 단순히 아는 것에 머물게 하는 한계에 있다는 것을 알려줍니다.

듣는 것과 행하는 것. 이 두 가지가 같아 보이지만 전혀 다르다는 것을 바울이 말하고 있습니다. 신앙생활을 오래 하다 보면 아는 것이 많아집니다. 말씀도 많이 듣고, 설교도 많이 듣고, 신학적인 언어도 익숙해집니다. 그런데 아는 것이 많아졌다고 행하는 것이 자동으로 따라오지는 않는다는 것입니다. 오히려 아는 것이 많아질수록 행하지 않는 것에 대한 변명도 정교해지는 경우가 있습니다.

14절에보면. "율법을 가지지 않은 이방 사람이, 사람의 본성을 따라 율법이 명하는 바를 행하면, 그들은 율법을 가지고 있지 않아도, 자기 자신이 자기에게 율법입니다." 이방인이 율법 없이도 율법이 요구하는 것을 행할 수 있다는 것입니다. 이것이 바울이 말하는 자연법의 개념입니다. 하나님이 모든 사람의 마음에 새겨놓으신 것이 있다는 것입니다.

15절이 더 구체적입니다. "율법이 요구하는 일이 자기의 마음에 적혀 있음을 드러내 보입니다. 그들의 양심도 이 사실을 증언합니다." 양심이라는 단어가 나옵니다. 양심은 하나님이 모든 사람에게 주신 내면의 증인입니다. 율법을 들어본 적이 없어도, 옳고 그름을 어느 정도 감지하는 것. 그것이 양심입니다.

그런데 양심이 완벽한 것이 아니라는 것도 알고 있습니다. 바울이 말합니다. "그들의 생각들이 서로 고발하기도 하고, 변호하기도 합니다." 양심은 때로는 고발하고, 때로는 변호합니다. 같은 사람 안에서 옳다고 말하기도 하고, 괜찮다고 말하기도 합니다. 양심이 흔들릴 수 있다는 것입니다.

여기서 우리들이 경험하는 수많은 정당화에 대한 생각이 들었습니다. 적당한것, 그래도 괜찮은것 이런 마음들이 우리를 안일하게 하는 것은 아닐까? 하는 생각이 들었습니다.

어제 저녁 마지막 시간에 은퇴하신 목사님의 이야기를 들으면서 이분이 가진 교회를 향한 사랑과 안타까움을 느낄 수 있었습니다. 누구나 존경하는 이분의 삶에는 하나님의 놀라온 은혜와 사랑은 결국 교회를 통해 드러나고 이를 위해 절박한 마음을 가지는 것이 목사의 마음이라는 것입니다.

오늘 읽은 바울의 말씀에도 절박함과 간절함이 녹아있습니다. 최선을 다해 복음을 전하려는 마음, 그리고 최선을 다해 은퇴했음에도 후배 목사들에게 교회를 사랑하는 마음을 전하는 모습, 매일 새벽마다 한인교회를 위해서 기도하신다는 목사님의 마음은 우리의 사역이 결코 그냥 이루어지는 것이 아님을 보여주는것 같습니다.

이제 서둘러 올라갑니다. 힘을 받고 마음을 담아 최선을 다해 절박함을 가지고 사역을 시작해야할것 같습니다.

묵상

하나님이 세우신 교회가 세상에 빛으로 드러나려면 교회안에 있는 분들이 절박하게 사역해야합니다.

"For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous." (Romans 2:13)

Paul's words about the law carry the weight of someone who once staked everything on it. This reads like a thorough reckoning with something he had deeply believed in. The point — that it is not knowing but doing that makes a person righteous — exposes the fundamental limit of the law: it can stop at knowledge and go no further.

Hearing and doing. They look like the same thing, but Paul is saying they are entirely different. The longer you live in faith, the more you accumulate. More sermons, more Scripture, more theological vocabulary. But knowledge accumulating does not automatically produce action. If anything, the more we know, the more sophisticated our excuses for not acting can become.

Verse 14 opens something up. When Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. People who never received the law can still live out what the law requires. This is what Paul calls natural law — something God has written into every human heart.

Verse 15 makes it more specific. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness. Conscience — an inner witness given by God to every person. Even without ever hearing the law, people sense what is right and what is wrong. That is conscience.

But conscience is not infallible. Paul adds: their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them. The same conscience that convicts can also excuse. Within the same person, at different moments, it speaks in opposite directions. And that is where the thought came to me — how much of our lives gets quietly shaped by the logic of good enough, close enough, it'll be fine. That kind of reasoning has a way of making us comfortable with things we shouldn't be comfortable with.

Last night, at the closing session, I listened to a retired pastor speak. What came through was the depth of his love for the church and the ache he carries for it. His life has been marked by remarkable grace, and through it all, one conviction has held steady: the grace and love of God are meant to be made visible through the church, and holding that with urgency is what it means to be a pastor. He told us he still prays for Korean churches every early morning. Ministry, he was saying without quite saying it, does not happen on its own.

That same urgency runs through Paul's words. A man giving everything to proclaim the gospel. And a retired pastor giving everything to pass on a love for the church to those who come after him. Neither one treating it casually.

Time to head back now. I want to carry what I received here — and begin ministry again with that kind of urgency and full heart.

Reflection

For the church God has established to shine as light in the world, those within it must serve with urgency.
