Romans 3:1–8, Tuesday, July 7, 로마서 3:1-8, 7월7일 화요일

그럴 수 없습니다. 사람은 다 거짓말쟁이이지만, 하나님은 참되십니다. 성경에 기록한 바 "주님께서는 말씀하실 때에 의로우시다 인정을 받으시고 재판을 받으실 때에 주님께서 이기시려는 것입니다" 한 것과 같습니다.(롬 3:4)

오랜만에 긴운전을 하고 안전하게 샌디에고에 도착했습니다. 다들 5번 고속도로를 운전해보셨을 테지만, 가장 지루한 운전구간은 산을 넘어가기 전 1시간정도 인것 같습니다. 베이커스 필드에 접어들어서 산을 마주하면 다 온것 같은 생각이 드는데 사실 이 구간이 가장 지루한, 곧 나올것 같은데 나오지 않는 느낌을 주는 운전구간인것 같습니다.

다 말라버려서 하얗게 변한 산들을 지나, 휴가를 마치고 또는 휴가를 떠는 많은 차량행렬을 따라 서둘러 엘에이를 지나 샌디에고 교회(이름을 예닮교회로 바꾸었어요) 6시에 도착하기 위해 분주하게 움직였습니다. 중간에 뷰에나파크에서 아들과 머리를 다듬고 (한국식 미장원이라 오랜만에 한국시스템에 당황했어요) 옆집에서 만두를 픽업해서 운전하며 허기진 배를 채우고는 저녁시간에 맞춰 도착했습니다.

이렇세 서둘러 운전해서 도착하면 목적을 이뤄낸 안도감보다도 이 시간을 마주하며 결국 지루한 시간을 지나와야 원하는 목적지에 닿을 수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 아마 이 길을 수십번 다녀도 비슷한 느낌은 바뀌지 않는 걸 보면, 결국 내가 어찌 마음 먹냐에 따라 마주한 길의 의미는 바뀔수 있을 것 같습니다.

바울은 오늘 말씀에서 유대인의 특권은 하나님의 말씀을 맡은 것이지만, 이들이 생각하는 이 특별함이 구원을 보장하지 않는다고 이야가힙니다. 그리고 하나님은 늘 신실하시고 변함이 없으시지만, 인간의 자신의 실패로 하나님도 실패한것 처럼 구는데 하나님은 이런 상황에서도 계속해서 우리를 구원하시려고 노력하신다고 이야기합니다.

우리가 마주한 어려움은 우리의 신앙을 재단하려 듭니다. 하나님이 안계시것처럼 생각하게 하기도 합니다. 반대로 하나님의 말씀을 받았다는 특별한 생각에 묶여지내면, 또는 내가 아는 것, 경험한것이 전부라고 생각하고 단정하고 그걸 세상 판단의 기준으로 삼는다면 이 특별함에 만족하고 그 이상의 하나님의 마음을 가지지 못하면 구원을 보장받는 것이 아니라 자기 의에 갖히게 됩니다.

시간을 흐로, 흘러서 그 시간을 이미 넘었는데 거기에 붙들려 있으면 하나님은 여전히 우리를 위해 열심히 역사하시려 하는데 우리는 그자리에 머물러 있기만 하는 무기력함에 빠집니다. 지루한 구간은 결국 넘어서고, 아무것도 일어날것 같지 않은 막막한 시간도 결국 지나갑니다.

이런 시간앞에서 우리와 늘 동행하시는 주님이 계시다는 것을 잊지 마시기 바랍니다.

묵상

걱정으로 눈물 흐리던 시간은 이미 지나갔습니다. 그 시간보다 앞서서 우리와 동행하시는 주님을 기억하는 것이 신앙입니다.

No, indeed! God tells the truth, even if everyone else is a liar. The Scriptures say about God, "Your words will be proven true, and in court you will win your case."

After a long drive, I made it safely to San Diego. Anyone who has driven Highway 5 knows it well — but the most draining stretch is probably that hour or so before you hit the mountains. Once you reach Bakersfield and see the range rising ahead, you feel like you're almost there. And yet that section is somehow the most tedious part of the whole trip — the feeling that you're nearly there, and yet it keeps not arriving.

Past the mountains bleached white from drought, weaving through the long lines of cars heading to vacations or coming home from them, I pushed through Los Angeles and raced to make it to San Diego — Yedam Church, as they've renamed themselves — by 6 PM. Along the way, my son and I stopped in Buena Park to get our hair cut at a Korean barbershop (it had been a while, and I'd forgotten how the system works there), picked up dumplings from next door, ate while driving, and pulled in just in time for the evening.

Arriving after a drive like that, what I feel isn't so much relief at reaching the destination as the quiet realization that you simply have to pass through the boring stretch to get anywhere worth going. Having driven this route dozens of times and still feeling the same way every time — I think it comes down to how you choose to hold the road in front of you. The meaning of the journey changes depending on what you decide to bring to it.

Paul says in today's passage that the privilege of the Jewish people was being entrusted with the Word of God — but that this sense of being special did not guarantee salvation. And while God remains perfectly faithful and unchanging, people tend to treat their own failures as evidence that God has failed too. Yet even in those moments, Paul says, God keeps working to save us.

The difficulties we face have a way of trying to pass judgment on our faith. They can make it feel as though God isn't there. But the opposite danger is just as real — getting so attached to the fact that you've received God's Word, or to what you already know and have experienced, that you treat your own understanding as the final standard for everything. When we settle into that kind of self-satisfaction, we don't receive assurance of salvation — we get trapped inside our own sense of righteousness.

Time keeps moving. If God has already moved past a certain moment and is still actively working on our behalf, but we remain stuck there — we sink into a kind of helplessness that keeps us from meeting what God is doing now. The tedious stretch does eventually end. The stretch that feels like nothing will ever happen does eventually pass.

In those moments, please don't forget — the Lord is walking with us through all of it.

Reflection

The hours we spent weeping with worry have already passed. Faith is remembering the Lord who walked ahead of us through all of it.
