Romans 7:1–6, Thursday, July 2, 로마서 7:1-6, 7월2일 목요일

"지금은, 우리를 옭아맸던 것에 대하여 죽어서, 율법에서 풀려났습니다. 그래서 우리는 문자에 얽매인 낡은 정신으로 하나님을 섬기지 않고, 성령이 주시는 새 정신으로 하나님을 섬깁니다." (롬 7:6, 새번역)

바울이 결혼을 예로 듭니다. "결혼한 여자는, 그 남편이 살아 있는 동안에는 법으로 남편에게 매여 있으나, 남편이 죽으면 남편의 법에서 풀려납니다." 처음 읽으면 왜 갑자기 결혼 이야기인가 싶습니다. 그런데 바울이 이 비유를 통해 하려는 말이 있습니다. 율법과 우리의 관계가 달라졌다는 것입니다.

4절에서 바울이 중요한 말씀을 전합니다. "여러분도 그리스도의 몸으로 말미암아, 율법에 대해서는 죽임을 당했습니다. 그래서 여러분은 다른 분, 곧 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아나신 그분에게 속하게 되었습니다." 우리가 죽은 것이 아닙니다. 율법에 대하여 죽임을 당한것이고 이제는 율법이 아닌 그리스도안에 있다는 의미로 다시 생명가운데 있게 되었다는 것입니다.

5절을 보면. "이전에 우리가 육신을 따라 살 때에는, 율법으로 말미암아 일어나는 죄의 욕정이 우리 몸의 지체 안에서 작용해서, 죽음에 이르는 열매를 맺었습니다." 율법이 죄를 일으킨다는 것처럼 들립니다. 그런데 바울이 말하려는 것은 율법이 나쁘다는 것이 아닙니다. 율법 안에서 살아가는 것이 오히려 죄의 욕정을 자극한다는 것입니다. 하지 말라고 하면 더 하고 싶어지는 것. 규정이 많을수록 규정을 넘으려는 마음이 생기는 것. 이것이 인간의 본성이라는 것입니다.

경험적으로 압니다. 금식을 선언한 날 유독 먹고 싶은 것이 많아지는 것. 기도하려고 앉으면 딴생각이 더 많이 나는 것. 하지 말아야 한다는 의식이 오히려 그것에 더 집중하게 만드는 것. 이것이 율법의 한계라는 것입니다. 율법이 잘못된 것이 아니라, 율법만으로는 우리가 변화될 수 없다는 것입니다.

그래서 6절이 더 선명하게 들립니다. "지금은, 우리를 옭아맸던 것에 대하여 죽어서, 율법에서 풀려났습니다." 율법이 우리를 옭아 맸었는데 이제 그 묶임에서 놓여났다는 것입니다. "문자에 얽매인 낡은 정신으로 하나님을 섬기지 않고, 성령이 주시는 새 정신으로 하나님을 섬깁니다." 섬기는 방식이 달라지면서 성령이 주신 새로운 방식으로 살아가게되었다는 것이죠.

이것이 구체적으로 어떤 것인지 생각해봤습니다. 문자에 얽매인 율법에 얽메인다는 것은 섬기는 것은 안 하면 벌 받을까봐 하는 것입니다. 해야 하니까 하는 것입니다. 그런데 성령이 주시는 새 정신으로 섬기는 것은 사랑하기 때문에 하는 것입니다. 변화가 외부에서 오는 것이 아니라, 안에서 나오는 것입니다. 예배가 의무가 아니라 기쁨이 되는 것. 기도가 숙제가 아니라 대화가 되는 것. 섬김이 부담이 아니라 자연스러운 것이 되는 것.

아직 그 자리에 완전히 이르지 못했다는 것을 압니다. 여전히 해야 하니까 하는 것들이 있습니다. 그런데 오늘 본문이 말하는 것은 그 방향이 있다는 것입니다. 문자에 얽매인 낡은 정신이 아니라 성령이 주시는 새 정신으로 살아가는 것. 그것이 우리가 향해 가는 곳입니다.

묵상

섬김의 동력이 규정이 아니라 성령이 될 때, 신앙은 의무에서 기쁨으로 바뀝니다.

"But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code." (Romans 7:6)

Paul uses marriage as an illustration. A married woman is bound by law to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law that binds her to him. Reading it for the first time, you might wonder why he suddenly brings up marriage. But there is a point he is building toward. The relationship between us and the law has changed.

Verse 4 carries the weight of it. You also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another — to him who was raised from the dead. We didn't die. We died to the law — through Christ's body. And because of that, we now belong to someone different. To the one who was raised from the dead. We have moved from law into life.

Verse 5 is a little uncomfortable. For when we were in the realm of the flesh, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in us, so that we bore fruit for death. It sounds like the law produces sin. But that's not what Paul is saying — the law itself is not the problem. The problem is that living under the law actually stirs the passions of sin. Tell someone not to do something and the desire grows stronger. The more rules, the more the impulse to cross them. This is human nature.

We know this from experience. The day you declare a fast, suddenly everything looks delicious. The moment you sit down to pray, the distracting thoughts multiply. The awareness of what you must not do ends up focusing your attention on exactly that thing. This is the limit of the law — not that the law is wrong, but that the law alone cannot change us.

That is why verse 6 lands so clearly. But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law. Bound — that word carries real weight. We were bound. And now that binding has been broken. How? We serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code. The way we serve has changed. Not by keeping rules, but by the new way the Spirit gives.

What does that actually look like? Serving under the written code means doing things out of fear of punishment. Doing them because you have to. But serving in the new way of the Spirit means doing things because of love. The change comes from the inside, not imposed from the outside. Worship becoming joy instead of obligation. Prayer becoming conversation instead of homework. Service becoming natural instead of a burden.

I haven't arrived there fully yet. There are still things I do simply because I'm supposed to. But what today's passage holds out is a direction. Not the old written code, but the new way of the Spirit. That is where we are headed.

Reflection

When the motivation for serving shifts from rules to the Spirit, faith moves from obligation to joy.
