“Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good.” (3 John 1:11)

Third John is one of the shortest letters in the Bible. And yet compressed into its few lines is a remarkably complete picture of what can happen inside a church. Three people appear: Diotrephes, Demetrius, and Gaius — the one receiving the letter. Today’s passage is their story.

Diotrephes is introduced in verse 9 with a phrase that captures everything about him: he loves to be first. One clause, and the whole person is visible. He wants to be at the top, to hold the position. And verse 10 shows what that looks like when it takes root in a community. He spreads malicious gossip. He refuses to welcome other believers. He actively prevents those who want to show hospitality from doing so — and then expels them from the church.

This is what happens when someone uses the influence they have been given not to build people up but to keep them down. It happened in the early church. It still happens.

But John does not linger there. He names Diotrephes and then, in verse 11, pivots entirely: Do not imitate what is evil but what is good. He does not spend more energy condemning Diotrephes. He redirects — away from the negative example and toward a choice. What will you imitate? Where will your eyes go?

Verse 12 gives us the answer: Demetrius. Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone — and even by the truth itself. What earned Demetrius his reputation was not words or position. It was the quality of his actual life. The truth of how he lived preceded him.

The contrast between these two men is the whole point. Diotrephes wanted to be first; Demetrius simply tried to live faithfully. Diotrephes grasped for a seat; Demetrius was recognized because of who he was. The direction of your gaze shapes the direction of your life. What we look toward, we tend to become.

The church is not a place where people compete to be first. It is a place where people choose to live honestly together — and where, by doing so, they build one another up. That is what John means by imitating what is good.

Reflection

Be someone whose life speaks for itself. Not someone who holds a position — someone who lives truthfully. That is the direction.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. This Sunday, Sacramento Joheun Church is holding a dedication service for their new campus. Please pray for their ministry as they move into this new space.

  2. Today Pastor Jayoung Eom arrives in the country. Please pray for the beginning of this new chapter in ministry. She will be working alongside me across the full range of church life — education ministry as the primary focus, along with administration and various other areas of service. Above all, please pray that her arrival brings new energy and life to Yeolin Church.
