"The Most High does not live in houses made by human hands." (Acts 7:48)

Stephen's declaration that God is not confined to the temple provoked fury among the legalists, priests, and Pharisees of his day. Religious conviction can and should hold firm — but when that conviction curdles into rage, something has gone wrong. That part is harder to understand.

Scripture tells us very little about Stephen's background. He appears as one of the seven deacons, chosen to handle the practical work of caring for the poor within the early church community. And yet he became the first martyr — because of what he said in today's passage.

The early church did not begin as a separate religion. It started as a movement within Judaism. When the disciples went to proclaim the Word, they went to synagogues — that is where the people were. Trace Paul's footsteps and you find him walking into synagogues in city after city. The first Christians were Jews who believed Jesus was the Messiah, worshipping in Jewish spaces.

What enraged the Jewish religious leaders was that Stephen had directly challenged the theological foundation they stood on: the temple. Temple-centered theology has its roots in Deuteronomy, and its emergence was not accidental. A community that kept collapsing into idol worship needed a fixed, authoritative location for God's presence. And the scattered local shrines — the high places — were bleeding the community's finances and diluting the purity of worship. Centralizing everything in the temple was a practical and theological response to real problems. The original intent was sound.

But by the time of Jesus and Stephen — the era of the Second Temple (the First having been destroyed during the Babylonian exile, the Second rebuilt after the return) — the temple had become the seat of religious power. The priests, the Pharisees, the scribes: this was their center of gravity, their source of authority and control. And the problems that came with that are visible in the Gospels. The temple courts had become a marketplace where the poor were effectively priced out of worship — animals for sacrifice had to be purchased with temple currency, and the exchange rates were exploitative. The temple, meant to be the place where all could approach God, had become a tiered system, with access determined by economics and status.

The question that surfaced was not subtle: is God actually contained within a system human beings built? Jesus answered it through his life — proclaiming a God who is present everywhere, accessible to everyone. Stephen was faithfully carrying that message. God is no longer confined to the temple. That declaration, delivered before the Sanhedrin, is one of the seeds from which the worldwide church grew. Every church building is a symbolic space — not a container for God, but a place where people practice approaching him. God's presence can be encountered in any of them.

The deepest danger in religion is mistaking unexamined loyalty to human-built institutions for genuine faith — and calling that loyalty conviction. Questions are not the same as rejection. Questions are the means of going deeper. And confessing that God is all-knowing and all-powerful means refusing to limit him to the weight of any institution, however old or revered.

That confession is what the church was built on. The Protestant Reformation took it a step further — returning the Scriptures to everyone, not just the clergy, and grounding that move in the priesthood of all believers. Every person called by God is a priest, a child, a servant of God. Stephen's sermon set off a chain of consequences, like a butterfly's wings, that eventually led us here.

The weight of God's calling is the same for each of us. Walk closely with the Lord today, holding that.

Reflection

If the calling carries the same weight for each of us, then the gifts God uses through us carry that same weight too.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. We must always pray for our nation and its people. Politics and government regularly use religious sentiment to build support and consolidate power. Remember that God is not contained by those uses — and pray that each of us would pursue an independent, direct relationship with him, free from those distortions.

  2. Please also pray for health and safety for those traveling and vacationing this summer.
