오늘 아침, 커피를 내리다가 문득 이런 생각이 들었습니다. 우리는 참 많은 것을 알고 있다고 생각하며 살아갑니다. 정보는 넘치고, 검색 한 번이면 모르는 것이 없는 시대입니다. 그런데 이상하게도 아는 것이 많아질수록 마음은 더 복잡해지고, 확신은 더 흔들립니다.

어제 한 성도님과 통화를 했습니다. "목사님, 요즘 기도가 안 돼요. 머리로는 다 아는데, 마음이 따라가질 않아요." 그 말이 오래 남았습니다. 머리로는 다 아는데. 우리가 자주 하는 말입니다. 그런데 바울은 오늘 본문에서 그 "아는 것"의 자리를 정면으로 뒤집어 놓습니다.

"십자가의 도가 멸망하는 자들에게는 미련한 것이요 구원을 받는 우리에게는 하나님의 능력이라" (고전 1:18)

바울이 말하는 고린도는 지금의 우리와 참 닮아 있습니다. 헬라 철학이 꽃피던 도시, 지혜와 웅변이 곧 힘이었던 문화. 그 안에서 교회는 흔들리고 있었습니다. 누구의 말이 더 지혜로운가, 누구를 따르는 것이 더 현명한가를 두고 분열하고 있었습니다. 세상의 기준으로 교회를 세우려 했던 것입니다.

그런데 바울은 말합니다. 하나님의 미련한 것이 사람보다 지혜 있고, 하나님의 약한 것이 사람보다 강하다고. 이 말은 단순한 역설이 아닙니다. 십자가 앞에 서면 우리가 쌓아 올린 판단의 기준들이 얼마나 허약한지를 고백하게 됩니다.

돌아보면 사역 속에서 저도 자주 "지혜로운 방법"을 찾으려 했습니다. 더 효과적인 프로그램, 더 설득력 있는 전략, 더 그럴듯한 계획. 물론 그것이 나쁜 것은 아닙니다. 그러나 그것이 앞서가고 십자가가 뒤로 밀려날 때, 교회는 바빠지지만 깊어지지는 않습니다. 성도들의 발걸음은 늘어나지만 영혼의 무게는 가벼워집니다.

바울이 고린도 교회를 향해 "너희 부르심을 보라"고 말한 것이 마음에 걸립니다. 지혜로운 자가 많지 않고, 능한 자가 많지 않고, 문벌 좋은 자가 많지 않다고. 그런데 그것이 부끄러움이 아니라 오히려 하나님의 선택이라고 말합니다. 하나님은 세상의 미련한 것들을 택하사 지혜 있는 자들을 부끄럽게 하셨습니다.

이 말씀 앞에서 우리 교회를 봅니다. 작습니다. 부족합니다. 세상의 기준으로 보면 내세울 것이 많지 않습니다. 그런데 바울의 눈으로 보면, 바로 그 자리가 하나님이 일하시기에 가장 좋은 자리입니다. 우리의 부족함이 하나님의 능력을 가리지 않는 자리, 우리의 약함이 오히려 그분의 강함을 드러내는 자리.

그래서 결국 바울은 이렇게 마무리합니다. "자랑하는 자는 주 안에서 자랑하라." 우리의 지혜가 아니라, 우리의 능력이 아니라, 오직 그리스도 예수 안에서. 그분이 우리에게 지혜와 의로움과 거룩함과 구원이 되셨기 때문입니다.

오늘도 부족한 손으로 하루를 시작합니다. 그러나 그 부족함을 아시는 분이 함께하신다는 것, 그것이 오늘 하루를 견디게 하는 힘이 아닌가 싶습니다.

묵상

나는 어떤 지혜에 기대어 오늘을 살아가고 있나요? 십자가의 도가 내 삶의 중심에 서 있는지, 아니면 세상의 기준이 그 자리를 차지하고 있지는 않은지 돌아봅니다.

중보기도

1. 우리 교회 성도들이 세상의 기준이 아닌 십자가의 지혜로 각자의 자리에서 빛을 발하도록 기도해주세요.

2. 부족함 가운데서도 하나님의 능력을 경험하며 낙심하지 않고 사역의 자리를 지키는 모든 동역자들을 위해 기도해주세요.

This morning, as I was brewing coffee, a thought suddenly came to me. We live thinking that we know so much. Information is overflowing, and with a single search, we live in an age where there is almost nothing we do not know. Yet strangely, the more we know, the more complicated our hearts become, and the more our certainty begins to shake.

Yesterday, I had a phone call with a church member. “Pastor, I can’t seem to pray these days. I understand everything in my head, but my heart won’t follow.” That sentence stayed with me for a long time. I understand everything in my head. It is something we say often. But in today’s passage, Paul completely overturns the place of that “knowing.”

“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Cor 1:18)

The Corinth Paul speaks about is very similar to us today. It was a city where Greek philosophy flourished, where wisdom and eloquence were power. Within that, the church was being shaken. They were divided over whose words were wiser, and whom it was more reasonable to follow. They were trying to build the church according to the standards of the world.

But Paul says that the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. This is not just a simple paradox. When we stand before the cross, we are led to confess how fragile the standards we have built really are.

Looking back, even in ministry I often tried to find the “wise way.” More effective programs, more persuasive strategies, more convincing plans. Of course, these are not wrong. But when those go ahead and the cross is pushed behind, the church becomes busy but not deep. The footsteps of people increase, but the weight of the soul becomes lighter.

Paul’s words to the Corinthian church, “Consider your calling,” stay on my heart. Not many were wise, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. Yet that is not shame, but rather God’s choice. God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise.

Before this word, I look at our church. It is small. It is lacking. By the standards of the world, there is not much to boast about. But through Paul’s eyes, that very place is the best place for God to work. It is a place where our lack does not hide God’s power, and where our weakness reveals His strength.

So in the end, Paul concludes like this: “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” Not our wisdom, not our strength, but only in Christ Jesus. Because He has become for us wisdom, righteousness, holiness, and redemption.

Today again, I begin the day with insufficient hands. Yet the One who knows that insufficiency is with me. Perhaps that is the strength that enables me to endure this day.

Reflection

What kind of wisdom am I relying on today?Is the message of the cross at the center of my life,or have the standards of the world taken that place?

Intercessory Prayer

1. Please pray that the members of our church may shine in their places, not by the standards of the world, but by the wisdom of the cross.

2. Please pray for all co-workers in ministry, that even in their weakness they may experience God’s power, not lose heart, and remain faithful in their calling.
