"You were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God." (1 Corinthians 6:11)

Today's passage quietly dismantles any idealized picture of the early church. Believers in Corinth were taking each other to court — bringing disputes before unbelievers rather than working them out within the community. Paul is plainly troubled by it. His counsel, in principle, is to resolve things inside the church.

Easier said than done. Conflict is one of the hardest things to navigate well. There are disputes where you feel pulled to take sides. There are problems that just get left alone because no one knows what to do with them. What makes sense in the mind doesn't always translate into the lived reality. That gap is just part of being human.

I'm writing this quickly this morning, in a brief window before a long day of travel. And this particular line from Paul lands heavy even in the few minutes I have: Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? It tests something in us. Isn't standing up for what's right the right thing to do? Shouldn't justice matter? And yet Paul says — take the loss. Be cheated if you have to.

Sitting with that for even a moment, I feel the weight of it. So much of how we move through life is organized around not losing out, not getting taken advantage of. And Paul is saying: that is not the organizing principle of the Christian life. I'm carrying that thought with me as I go to see my son off. I'll write more when I can.

A message came in yesterday from Jimmy — the young man who plays drums in worship. He's having hernia surgery today. He mentioned he likely won't be at church for about two weeks. He needs prayer, and I'd ask that you hold him in your hearts.

There is also someone staying in the church parking lot — a person in the middle of a move whose plans fell apart and who has been sleeping in their van for a few days. I spoke with them briefly yesterday. They said they'd be moving on in a day or two. I hesitated, and then told them it was okay to stay. If you see them coming or going, please say hello and look out for them.

Yesterday I went to Trinity Chapel to document the damaged instruments and sound equipment for the insurance claim. The exterior has been boarded up securely to protect the space. There is a lot to do before we can use it for worship again — we will do some cleaning and tidying together on Sunday, and I have someone coming Monday to handle the necessary repairs.

I will try not to let these devotionals go quiet while I'm away with the kids. Please pray for a peaceful journey.

Reflection

Living as a Christian means living differently — but what does that actually look like in practice?

Intercessory Prayer

  1. Please pray for the young adult worship service.

  2. Please pray for Jimmy and his recovery.
