어제 본문에서 바울은 고난 앞에서도 부끄러워하지 않는다고 했습니다. 오늘은 그 이유가 더 선명해집니다. "나는 내가 믿어 온 분을 알고 있다." 믿음의 대상을 안다는 것입니다. 하나님의 존재를 머리로 아는 것이 아니라, 함께 살아온 시간 속에서 알게 된 분이라는 것입니다. 바울이 쓴 "알고 있다"는 말에는 긴 시간이 담겨 있습니다. 다메섹 도상에서 만난 그 순간부터, 감옥과 매질과 파선과 돌에 맞는 시간을 지나오면서 쌓인 앎입니다.

"그분은 내가 그에게 맡긴 것을 그 날까지 지켜 주실 능력이 있다." 맡겼다는 것입니다. 바울이 하나님께 무언가를 맡겼습니다. 자기 생명인지, 자기 사역인지, 자기가 이루지 못한 것들인지 정확히는 모르지만, 바울은 그것을 하나님께 내어놓았습니다. 그리고 지켜 주실 것을 확신한다고 합니다. 처형을 앞두고, 손에 잡히는 것이 없는 자리에서, 맡긴 것이 지켜진다는 확신. 이것이 바울의 담대함의 뿌리입니다.

13절에서 바울이 디모데에게 당부합니다. "내게서 들은 건전한 말씀을 본보기로 삼고, 그리스도 예수 안에 있는 믿음과 사랑으로 그것을 지키십시오." 건전한 말씀을 본보기로 삼으라는 것입니다. 새로운 것을 찾으라는 것이 아닙니다. 이미 들은 것, 이미 받은 것을 지키라는 것입니다. 신앙의 성숙이 늘 새로운 것을 더하는 것이 아니라, 이미 받은 것을 더 깊이 붙드는 것일 수 있습니다.

그런데 그 지키는 방식이 의지력만으로 되는 것이 아니라고 합니다. "믿음과 사랑으로." 말씀을 지키는 것이 규율이 아니라 관계 안에서 이루어진다는 것입니다. 예수님을 믿는 것, 예수님을 사랑하는 것이 말씀을 지키는 힘이 된다는 것입니다.

14절, "그대에게 맡겨진 선한 것을 지키십시오. 우리 안에 사시는 성령으로 그것을 지키십시오." 맡겨진 선한 것. 디모데에게 맡겨진 것이 있다는 것입니다. 복음입니다. 바울에게서 받은 것입니다. 그것을 지키되, 성령으로 지키라고 합니다. 내 힘으로 붙드는 것이 아니라, 우리 안에 사시는 성령이 지키신다는 것입니다.

맡겼다는 단어가 12절과 14절에 모두 나옵니다. 바울은 하나님께 맡기고, 디모데는 맡겨진 것을 지킵니다. 맡기는 것과 지키는 것이 신앙의 두 축인 것 같습니다. 내가 통제할 수 없는 것은 하나님께 맡기고, 내게 주어진 것은 성령의 힘으로 지키는 것. 이 두 가지가 동시에 가능한 사람이 바울이었습니다.

요즘 손에 잡히지 않는 것들이 많은 시절입니다. 내가 어떻게 할 수 없는 것들, 결과가 내 손에 없는 것들. 그 자리에서 바울의 고백이 들립니다. 나는 내가 믿어 온 분을 압니다. 맡긴 것은 지켜집니다. 그러니 내게 맡겨진 것에 집중하면 됩니다.

묵상

하나님께 맡기는 것과 내게 맡겨진 것을 지키는 것, 이 두 가지가 신앙의 자리입니다.

중보기도

1. 교회는 중보기도로 세워집니다. 어제 해겸집사가 연락이 왔는데 수술이후에 경과를 봐야 항암치료를 한다고 하더군요. 잘하면 항암까지 가지 않아도 된다는 뜻입니다. 기도로 든든히 동행해주세요

Yesterday Paul said he was not ashamed even in the face of suffering. Today the reason becomes clearer. I know whom I have believed. He knows the one he has placed his faith in. Not a head-knowledge of God's existence — but a knowing built through years of lived experience together. The word know in Paul's writing carries a long history inside it. It begins on the road to Damascus, and accumulates through prisons, beatings, shipwrecks, and stonings. That kind of knowing takes time.

He is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day. Entrusted. Paul has handed something over to God. Whether it was his life, his ministry, or the things he never got to finish — we don't know exactly. But he placed it in God's hands. And facing execution, with nothing left to hold onto, he is convinced that what he has entrusted will be kept. That conviction is the root of Paul's courage.

In verse 13, Paul urges Timothy: Keep as the pattern of sound teaching what you heard from me, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. Hold to the sound teaching as your pattern. Not — go find something new. Hold onto what you have already heard, what you have already received. Spiritual maturity may not always be about adding new things. It may be about holding more deeply to what has already been given.

And the way to hold it is not willpower alone. With faith and love. Keeping the Word is not a matter of discipline — it happens inside a relationship. Believing in Jesus, loving Jesus — that is what makes it possible to keep what he has said.

Verse 14 is where today's passage comes to its point. Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you — guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us. The good deposit entrusted to Timothy. There is something placed in his hands — the gospel, received from Paul. Guard it, Paul says. But not by your own strength. The Holy Spirit who lives in us is the one who keeps it.

The word entrust appears in both verse 12 and verse 14. Paul entrusts to God, and Timothy guards what has been entrusted to him. These seem to be the two axes of faith — entrusting to God what we cannot control, and guarding with the Spirit's help what has been placed in our hands. Paul was someone who could do both at the same time.

These days there is a lot that feels out of reach. Things we cannot change, outcomes not in our hands. Into that place, Paul's confession comes quietly. I know whom I have believed. What I have entrusted is being kept. So we can give our attention to what has been entrusted to us.

Reflection

Entrusting to God what we cannot hold, and guarding what has been given to us — these two together are the place of faith.

Intercessory Prayer

1. The church is built through intercessory prayer. Haegyeom reached out yesterday with an update — after the surgery, they will need to monitor the results before deciding on chemotherapy. There is a real possibility that chemo may not be necessary at all. Please keep walking alongside them in prayer.
