"항해가 이미 위험하여 금식하는 절기도 이미 지났으므로 바울이 그들을 권하여" (행 27:9, 새번역)

바울이 배를 탑니다. 죄수 신분으로. 로마로 압송되는 길입니다. 목적지는 정해져 있는데, 상황은 전혀 녹록지 않습니다. 계절이 좋지 않습니다. 항해하기엔 이미 늦은 시기입니다. 바울이 말합니다. "이 항해가 위험합니다. 짐과 배뿐 아니라 우리 생명에도 피해가 있을 것입니다." 경고입니다.

그런데 아무도 듣지 않습니다. 백부장은 바울의 말보다 선장과 선주의 말을 더 신뢰합니다. 전문가의 말을 들은 것입니다. 항해 전문가들이 괜찮다고 하니까요. 게다가 지금 정박해 있는 항구가 겨울을 나기에 좋지 않은 곳이었습니다. 조금만 더 가면 더 좋은 항구가 있다고 합니다. 뵈닉스라는 곳입니다. 합리적인 판단처럼 보입니다. 전문가들도 동의합니다. 더 나은 곳이 눈앞에 보입니다. 남풍도 순하게 불기 시작합니다. 출발하기에 완벽한 조건처럼 보였습니다.

여기서 잠깐 멈추게 됩니다. 이런 장면이 낯설지 않습니다. 상황이 좋아 보이고, 전문가들이 동의하고, 조건이 갖춰진 것처럼 보일 때. 그런데 어딘가에서 "기다리라"는 작은 목소리가 들릴 때. 우리는 보통 어느 쪽을 선택합니까. 대부분은 눈에 보이는 것을 따라갑니다. 저도 그렇습니다.

바울은 죄수입니다. 아무 권한도 없습니다. 결정권이 없습니다. 항해 전문가도 아닙니다. 그런데 바울의 말이 옳았습니다. 이 이야기가 어떻게 끝나는지 우리는 압니다. 광풍이 몰아칩니다. 배가 위기에 처합니다. 바울이 경고했던 그대로 됩니다.

그런데 오늘 본문에서 제가 오래 머문 장면은 따로 있습니다. 바울이 경고를 한 후에 어떻게 했는지입니다. 아무도 듣지 않았습니다. 결정은 다른 사람들이 했습니다. 바울은 그 배에 그냥 탔습니다. 불평하거나 떠나거나 하지 않았습니다. 그냥 함께 탔습니다. 할 말을 했고, 받아들여지지 않았고, 그래도 함께 갔습니다.

말했는데 받아들여지지 않는 순간. 이 방향은 아닌 것 같다고 했는데 다수가 다른 선택을 하는 순간. 바울은 그럼에도 그 배에 함께 탔습니다. 그리고 광풍이 몰아쳤을 때, 가장 먼저 일어나서 사람들에게 용기를 준 것도 바울이었습니다.

할 말을 하는 것과 함께 가는 것, 이 두 가지가 동시에 가능하다는 것을 바울이 보여줍니다. 그리고 결국 그 배 안에서 바울이 필요했습니다.

할 말을 다 했어도, 함께 배에 타는 것이 공동체입니다.

"Since much time had passed, and the voyage was now dangerous because even the Fast was already over, Paul advised them." (Acts 27:9)

Paul boards a ship. As a prisoner. He is being taken to Rome under guard. The destination is fixed, but the conditions are anything but favorable. The season is wrong. It is already too late in the year to be sailing. Paul speaks up: This voyage is going to be disastrous. We will lose not only the cargo and the ship, but our own lives as well. A clear warning.

Nobody listens. The centurion trusts the captain and the ship's owner over Paul. The experts say it's fine — and they are, after all, the experts. On top of that, the harbor where they are docked is not a good place to spend the winter. There is a better harbor just a little further up the coast, a place called Phoenix. It sounds reasonable. The professionals agree. A better option is right there within reach. A gentle south wind begins to blow. Everything looks like the perfect moment to set sail.

I found myself pausing here. This scene is not unfamiliar. When conditions look favorable, when the experts are in agreement, when everything seems to be lining up — and yet somewhere, quietly, a small voice says wait. Which way do we usually go? Most of us follow what we can see. I do too.

Paul is a prisoner. He has no authority, no vote, no say. He is not a sailor. And yet Paul was right. We know how this story ends. A violent storm hits. The ship is in crisis. Everything Paul warned about comes true.

But the moment I kept coming back to in today's passage is not the warning itself — it's what Paul did after. Nobody listened. The decision was made by others. And Paul got on the boat anyway. He didn't complain. He didn't walk away. He just went with them. He said what needed to be said, it wasn't received, and he got on board anyway.

When you speak and no one listens. When you say I don't think this is the right direction and the majority chooses otherwise. Paul still got on that ship. And when the storm came, he was the first one on his feet — the one who stood up and gave everyone courage.

Paul shows us that speaking honestly and staying with the community are not opposites. Both are possible at the same time. And in the end, that ship needed Paul.

Reflection

Even after you've said everything that needed to be said, getting on the boat together — that is what community looks like.
