"내가 너희를 권하노니 이제는 안심하라 너희 중 아무도 생명에는 아무런 손상이 없겠고 오직 배뿐이리라" (행 27:22, 새번역)

남풍이 순하게 불기 시작했습니다. 출발했습니다. 그런데 얼마 지나지 않아 유라굴로라는 광풍이 몰아칩니다. 순식간에 상황이 뒤집힙니다. 배는 통제를 잃었습니다. 짐을 바다에 던집니다. 배의 기구들도 던집니다. 며칠째 해도 별도 보이지 않습니다. 누가 봐도 끝난 것 같은 상황입니다. 본문은 이렇게 말합니다. "살아날 가망이 없어 보였다."

여기서 바울이 일어납니다. 분위기를 읽고 조용히 있을 법도 한데, 바울이 먼저 말을 꺼냅니다. 솔직하게 시작합니다. "여러분, 내 말을 들었더라면 이런 피해를 당하지 않았을 것입니다." 좀 뼈가 있는 말입니다. 그래도 맞는 말이니까. 그런데 바울은 거기서 멈추지 않습니다. "그러나 이제는 안심하십시오."

바울이 안심하라고 말할 수 있는 근거가 있습니다. 간밤에 천사가 나타나서 말했습니다. "바울아, 두려워하지 마라. 네가 반드시 가이사 앞에 서야 하겠고, 하나님이 너와 함께 항해하는 모든 사람을 네게 주셨다." 바울 혼자 살아남는 것이 아닙니다. 함께 탄 모든 사람이 살아남는다는 약속입니다. 276명이 탄 배 안에서, 죄수 한 명이 받은 약속이 모든 사람의 생명을 붙들고 있습니다.

이 장면이 오래 머물렀습니다. 바울은 지금 가장 힘없는 자리에 있습니다. 죄수입니다. 결정권이 없습니다. 광풍 앞에서 아무것도 할 수 없습니다. 그런데 바울이 가진 것이 있습니다. 하나님의 약속입니다. 그리고 그 약속을 붙들고 일어납니다. 두려움에 잠긴 사람들 앞에서 말합니다. "나는 하나님을 믿습니다. 말씀하신 그대로 될 것입니다."

믿음이 분위기를 바꿉니다. 바울이 떡을 들고 하나님께 감사 기도를 드립니다. 며칠째 굶은 사람들 앞에서, 폭풍 한가운데서, 먹으라고 권합니다. 그러자 사람들이 먹기 시작합니다. 276명이 함께 먹습니다. 폭풍이 멈춘 것이 아닙니다. 상황이 바뀐 것이 아닙니다. 그런데 뭔가가 달라졌습니다. 포기하려던 사람들이 다시 움직이기 시작합니다. 밀을 바다에 버리면서 배를 가볍게 합니다. 살아보려는 의지가 생긴 것입니다.

약속 하나가 사람을 살립니다. 그리고 그 약속을 붙든 한 사람이 276명을 살립니다. 바울이 특별한 능력이 있어서가 아닙니다. 광풍 앞에서도 하나님의 말씀이 이루어진다는 것을 믿었기 때문입니다.

요즘 광풍 같은 시절을 살고 있는 분들이 있을 것입니다. 해도 별도 보이지 않는 것 같은 날들. 그 자리에서 바울이 한 것은 대단한 것이 아니었습니다. 약속을 기억하고, 일어나서, 먹으라고 한 것입니다. 그것으로 충분했습니다.

광풍 한가운데서도 약속을 기억하는 한 사람이, 주변을 살립니다.

"I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed." (Acts 27:22)

A gentle south wind began to blow. They set sail. But before long, a violent storm called the Euroclydon comes crashing down on them. The situation flips in an instant. The ship loses control. They throw the cargo overboard. Then the ship's tackle. For days, neither sun nor stars appear. By any measure, it looks like the end. The text puts it plainly: they gave up all hope of being saved.

And then Paul stands up. He could have read the room and stayed quiet. Instead, he speaks first. He starts honestly. Men, you should have taken my advice and not sailed from Crete — then you would have been spared this damage and loss. There's an edge to it. But it's true, so. And then he doesn't stop there. But now I urge you to keep up your courage.

Paul has a reason to say that. During the night, an angel appeared and said: Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar — and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you. Not just Paul surviving. Everyone. All 276 people on board. And the promise received by one prisoner is the thing holding every life together.

I kept coming back to this scene. Paul is in the most powerless position on that ship. A prisoner. No authority, no vote. Nothing he can do about the storm. And yet Paul has something. A promise from God. He stands up holding that promise. And in front of people paralyzed by fear, he says: I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.

Faith changes the atmosphere. Paul takes bread, gives thanks to God in front of everyone, and tells them to eat. In the middle of a storm, after days without food, he says — eat. And they do. All 276 of them eat together. The storm hasn't stopped. Nothing about the situation has changed. But something is different. People who were ready to give up start moving again. They throw the wheat into the sea to lighten the ship. The will to live comes back.

One promise saves lives. And one person holding onto that promise saves 276 people. Not because Paul had special abilities. But because he believed that even in the middle of a violent storm, what God said would come to pass.

We have some good news to share this morning. Byungjun Park and Sunah Kang have received their green cards after a long and uncertain wait. Thank you for holding on through all that time without losing heart, and for letting us share in this joy with you.

There are probably people living through their own kind of storm right now. Days when neither sun nor stars are visible. What Paul did in that moment wasn't extraordinary. He remembered the promise, stood up, and said — eat. That was enough.

Reflection

Even in the middle of a violent storm, one person who holds onto the promise can bring life to everyone around them.
