"천사가 밤에 옥문을 열어 사도들을 이끌어내어 이르되 가서 성전에 서서 이 생명의 말씀을 다 백성에게 말하라 하매" (행 5:19-20, 새번역)

사도들이 감옥에 갇혔습니다. 대제사장과 사두개인들이 시기심에 사로잡혀서 사도들을 잡아 가둔 것입니다. 두려움도 아니고, 신학적 이견도 아니고, 시기심이었습니다. 사도들이 하는 일이 잘 되고 있으니까, 사람들이 몰리니까, 그것이 불편했던 것입니다. 종교 권력자들이 시기심으로 사람을 가두는 장면이 2천 년 전 이야기인데, 낯설지 않습니다.

그런데 밤에 일이 벌어집니다. 주의 천사가 옥문을 엽니다. 조용히, 아무도 모르게. 간수들은 자고 있었고, 옥문은 잠겨 있었고, 아무런 이상이 없었습니다. 그런데 사도들은 없었습니다. 아침에 관원들이 확인하러 왔을 때, 감옥은 완벽하게 잠겨 있는데 안에는 아무도 없었습니다.

"가서 성전에 서서 이 생명의 말씀을 다 백성에게 말하라." 감옥에서 나왔으면 숨으라고 할 것 같습니다. 도망가라고 할 것 같습니다. 그런데 천사가 말하는 것은 다시 성전으로 가서 말씀을 전하라는 것입니다. 탈출이 목적이 아니라는 것입니다. 탈출은 사명을 계속하기 위한 것이었습니다.

사도들이 그대로 합니다. 새벽에 성전에 들어가서 가르치기 시작합니다. 두려움이 없었던 것이 아닐 것입니다. 어제 잡혔다가 오늘 또 성전에 들어가는 것이 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 그런데 천사의 말을 들었고, 그 말에 순종했습니다.

한편 대제사장과 공회 사람들은 아침에 회의를 엽니다. 사도들을 데려오라고 합니다. 간수들이 가보니 감옥은 잠겨 있고 안에 아무도 없습니다. 당황합니다. 어떻게 된 일인지 모릅니다. 그때 누군가가 와서 말합니다. "당신들이 가둔 사람들이 성전에서 백성을 가르치고 있습니다." 잡아 가뒀는데 성전에 있다는 것입니다.

권력이 사람을 가둘 수 있습니다. 문을 잠글 수 있습니다. 그런데 하나님이 여시는 문은 막을 수 없다는 것입니다. 사람의 권력이 하나님의 일을 막는 것처럼 보이는 순간이 있습니다. 그런데 하나님은 그 막힌 곳에서 일하십니다. 밤에, 아무도 모르게, 조용히.

살면서 막힌 것 같은 순간들이 있습니다. 이 방향은 아닌 것 같고, 이 문은 열리지 않을 것 같고, 다 잠긴 것 같은 느낌. 어제 대한민국 축구는 고구마 100개 먹은 것처럼 답답했습니다. 세상 재미없는 축구도 이런 축가 있을까? 싶은 비슷하게 삶에서도 이런걸 느낄때가 있죠. 그런데 오늘 본문이 말합니다. 밤에 일이 벌어진다. 잠긴 문이 열린다. 그리고 그 열림의 목적은 숨는 것이 아니라, 다시 성전으로 돌아가는 것이다.

묵상

하나님이 여시는 문은 사람이 막을 수 없습니다. 그리고 그 열린 문은 사명을 향해 있습니다.

중보기도

1. 하나님이 문을 여시도록 우리는 늘 기도하고 깨어있어야 할것 같습니다. 열린교회를 위해 그리고 사역을 위해, 성도들을 위해서 기도해주세요. 요즘 가장 큰 고민은 청년사역입니다. 7월부터 청년주일예배를 시작할것인가에 대해서 기도하고 있습니다. 사람은 보이지 않는다 계속해서 마음이 쓰입니다. 하나님이 문을 열도록 기도해주세요

"During the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. 'Go, stand in the temple courts,' he said, 'and tell the people all about this new life.'" (Acts 5:19-20)

The apostles are in prison. The high priest and the Sadducees had them arrested — driven not by fear, not by theological disagreement, but by jealousy. The apostles were doing well. People were gathering. And that was uncomfortable. Religious leaders throwing people in prison out of jealousy — this is a story from two thousand years ago, and yet it doesn't feel unfamiliar at all.

Then something happens in the night. An angel of the Lord opens the prison doors. Quietly, without anyone noticing. The guards are asleep. The doors are locked. Nothing seems out of place. But the apostles are gone. When the officials come to check in the morning, the prison is perfectly locked — and completely empty.

What the angel says to the apostles is the line that stayed with me longest today. Go, stand in the temple courts and tell the people all about this new life. You would expect the instruction to be: hide. Run. Get out of the city. But the angel sends them straight back to the temple to keep teaching. The escape was not the point. The escape was so the mission could continue.

And the apostles do exactly that. At dawn they go into the temple and begin teaching. It could not have been easy. They were arrested yesterday — and today they walk back into the same place. But they heard the angel's words, and they obeyed.

Meanwhile, the high priest and the council convene in the morning and send for the apostles. The guards go to the prison and find the doors locked and the cells empty. They have no idea what happened. Then someone comes in with a report: The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people. Arrested and locked up — and they're back at the temple.

That reversal is the heart of this passage. Power can lock people up. Power can shut doors. But a door that God opens cannot be blocked. There are moments when human power looks like it is stopping what God is doing. But God works in the blocked places — at night, without anyone seeing, quietly.

There are seasons in life when everything feels locked. This direction doesn't seem to be opening. That door doesn't seem like it will move. Everything feels shut. Yesterday's Korea match felt exactly like that — like eating a hundred sweet potatoes, stuck and going nowhere. The most frustrating kind of soccer. Life can feel like that too sometimes. And then today's passage says: something happens in the night. Locked doors open. And when they open, the direction is not away — it is back toward the calling.

Reflection

No one can shut a door that God opens. And the door he opens always points toward the mission.

Intercessory Prayer

1. We need to keep praying and staying awake for God to open doors. Please pray for Yeolin Church, for the ministries, and for the congregation. The thing weighing most heavily right now is the young adult ministry. We are praying about whether to launch a Sunday young adult worship service starting in July. People are hard to see right now, and yet the burden stays on my heart. Please pray for God to open that door.
