After cleaning Trinity Chapel! The photo was taken by Byung Joon Park, one of our church leaders.,

"For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen." (Romans 11:36)

There are moments when we do things we can't quite explain. Normally composed, and then something gets under your skin and you make a move that even surprises yourself.

On Sunday, on the way to Trinity Chapel for the cleanup, I ran into unusually heavy traffic. Ten minutes sitting there, not moving. The congregation was probably already there waiting. Something in me snapped — I pulled into the bus lane and drove. And a police officer pulled me over.

I explained the situation, mentioned Trinity Chapel, and the officer told me it's one of the top sources of complaints in Berkeley — and that they're hoping the building sells soon so the problems will stop. That landed heavier than I expected. More is riding on that building than I sometimes let myself think about.

Sitting with the embarrassment of that moment — one of the more mortifying things I've done in a while — and carrying all the complexity alongside it, I found myself feeling genuinely small. That feeling hasn't completely left.

This morning, in a quiet and empty house, I sat down with the Word. And Paul's wrestling came into focus. Has anyone worked harder for the gospel than Paul? He took the hardest questions head-on — God's election, Israel's refusal, the salvation of the Gentiles, the ultimate restoration of Israel. He carried all of it, argued it out, held the weight of it. And then, at the end of it all, the argument turns into a song.

His life couldn't have been so different from ours in the essentials. Disappointments when things didn't go as planned. The difficulty of relationships. Moments of not knowing what to do next. What sets his story apart is not that he was exempt from any of that — but that all of it eventually resolved into worship.

Verse 36: From him and through him and for him are all things. Three prepositions. From him — the origin. Through him — the process. For him — the purpose. It all begins with God, moves through God, and exists for God. Our lives follow the same pattern, whether we feel it or not. What seems like my beginning was from him. What seems like my doing is through him. What seems like my life is for him.

Start today with those three prepositions in mind.

Reflection

In the end, we are not so different from one another. Children of God, Christians, and the people of Yeolin Church.

Intercessory Prayer

  1. Please pray for the young adults returning for the new semester.

  2. The Oakland building sale is moving forward — one complicated piece remains. I spoke with the district superintendent yesterday, and in the end, the person who gets things done has to go do them. I'll be going in person to get the necessary signatures — three people need to sign a key document. Please pray that this final step comes together.
