Galatians 5:2–6, Thursday, June 25, 갈라디아서 5:2-6, 6월25일 목요일

"그리스도 예수 안에서는, 할례를 받거나 안 받는 것이 문제가 되는 것이 아닙니다. 가장 중요한 것은, 믿음이 사랑을 통하여 일하는 것입니다." (갈 5:6, 새번역)

바울이 갈라디아 교회에 강하게 말합니다. "나 바울이 여러분에게 말합니다. 여러분이 할례를 받으면, 그리스도는 여러분에게 아무런 유익이 없습니다." 꽤 직접적입니다. 바울답습니다. 갈라디아 교회에 들어온 사람들이 이방인 그리스도인들에게 할례를 받아야 한다고 가르치고 있었습니다. 유대교의 전통을 지켜야 진짜 믿음이라는 것이었습니다. 그것에 대한 바울의 대답이 오늘 본문입니다.

할례 자체가 문제가 아닙니다. 바울이 말하는 것은 할례를 받음으로써 의롭게 되려는 마음이 문제라는 것입니다. 3절에서 이렇게 말합니다. "내가 할례를 받는 모든 사람에게 다시 증언합니다. 그런 사람은 율법 전체를 이행해야 할 의무를 지닙니다." 할례를 통해 의로움을 얻으려면, 율법 전체를 지켜야 한다는 것입니다. 하나를 선택하면 전부를 선택해야 한다는 것입니다. 그런데 율법 전체를 지킬 수 있는 사람은 없습니다.

4절에. "율법으로 의롭게 되려고 하는 사람은 그리스도에게서 끊어지고, 은혜에서 떨어져 나간 사람입니다." 율법으로 의롭게 되려는 시도가 오히려 은혜에서 떨어지게 한다는 것입니다. 은혜에서 떨어진다는 표현이 무겁게 들립니다. 열심히 하려다가, 잘하려다가, 오히려 은혜에서 멀어질 수 있다는 것입니다.

신앙생활을 오래 하다 보면 이런 유혹이 생깁니다. 뭔가를 더 해야 할 것 같은 느낌. 이것을 지키면 더 믿음이 좋아질 것 같고, 저것을 더 하면 하나님이 더 기뻐하실 것 같은 마음. 그런데 바울이 말하는 것은 그 마음 자체가 이미 은혜에서 벗어나기 시작한 것일 수 있다는 것입니다. 내가 무언가를 더 함으로써 하나님 앞에 서려는 것, 그것이 할례의 논리와 다르지 않다는 것입니다.

5절에서 바울은 내가 노력해서 얻으려는 것보다, 주님이 이끄시는 것에 무게를 두고 이야기합니다.. "그러나 우리는 성령을 힘입어서, 믿음으로 의롭다고 하심을 받을 소망을 간절히 기다리고 있습니다." 내 노력이 아니라 성령을 힘입어서라는 것입니다. 내가 이루는 것이 아니라 기다리는 것이라는 것입니다. 신앙의 방향이 위에서 아래로 내려오는 것이지, 아래에서 위로 올라가는 것이 아니라는 것입니다.

6절이 오늘 아침에 나누는 성경본문의 핵심입니다. "그리스도 예수 안에서는, 할례를 받거나 안 받는 것이 문제가 되는 것이 아닙니다. 가장 중요한 것은, 믿음이 사랑을 통하여 일하는 것입니다." 형식이 문제가 아니라는 것입니다. 가장 중요한 것은 믿음이 사랑을 통하여 일하는 것이라고 합니다. 믿음이 규율로 나타나는 것이 아니라, 사랑으로 나타난다는 것입니다. 내가 열심히 지키는 것이 아니라, 사랑하게 되는 것. 그것이 믿음이 살아있다는 증거라는 것입니다.

겉모양과 형식이 중요할때도 있습니다. 그런데 그안에 어떤 의미로 만들어진 형식과 겉모양인지를 모르면 결국 겉치레만 남게되는 것입니다. 어제 한국축구를 보고 집에 오면서 "축구보러간게 아니라 밥먹으러 다녀온것 같다"는 아들에 말에 승리의 기쁨을 추구하던 것이 사라지면 다른 것은 의미가 없게 느껴질수 있다는 생각이 들었습니다. 어제는 축구보다 함께 모여 교제하고 이럴때 모일 수 있다는 마음을 확인했으면 충분합니다. 할말은 많지만, 더 중요한것을 나누고 이야기한 것에 만족합니다.

묵상

믿음의 증거는 형식을 얼마나 잘 지키느냐가 아니라, 그 믿음이 사랑을 통하여 일하느냐입니다.

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." (Galatians 5:6)

Paul speaks bluntly to the Galatian church. I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. Direct, and very Paul. There were people who had come into the Galatian church teaching that Gentile believers needed to be circumcised — that keeping the Jewish tradition was what real faith looked like. Today's passage is Paul's response to that.

The issue is not circumcision itself. What Paul is challenging is the impulse to become righteous through circumcision. Verse 3: I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. If you are going to pursue righteousness through one part of the law, you have taken on the whole thing. Choose one piece and you have chosen all of it. And no one can keep all of it.

Verse 4 is the line that landed heaviest. You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. The very attempt to become righteous through the law pushes a person away from grace. That phrase — fallen away from grace — carries real weight. Trying hard, doing more, performing better — and it turns out that effort itself can be the thing that moves us away from grace.

The longer you live in faith, the more familiar this temptation becomes. The feeling that you should be doing more. If I keep this one more thing, my faith will be stronger. If I add this practice, God will be more pleased. But Paul is saying that this impulse — trying to stand before God by doing more — is not different in kind from the circumcision logic. It is the same thing with different packaging.

In verse 5, Paul shifts the weight. But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. Not my effort — but through the Spirit. Not something I achieve — something I wait for. The direction of faith is downward, from above. Not upward, from below.

Verse 6 is the heart of it all. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Not the form. Not the practice. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. Not faith showing up as rule-keeping — faith showing up as love. Not how diligently I maintain the form, but whether love is actually moving through the faith. That is the sign that faith is alive.

Form and appearance matter sometimes. But when you lose sight of what the form was meant to hold, you end up with the shell and nothing inside it. After watching the Korea game yesterday and driving home, my son said: felt more like we went out for dinner than to watch soccer. When the joy of winning disappears, everything else starts to feel pointless. But yesterday was enough — gathering together, sharing a meal, being reminded that we can come together when the moment calls for it. There is more I could say about the game, but I am more satisfied with the things that actually mattered.

Reflection

The evidence of faith is not how well we keep the forms — it is whether that faith is expressing itself through love.
