내가 진정으로 진정으로 너희에게 말한다. 밀알 하나가 땅에 떨어져서 죽지 않으면 한 알 그대로 있고, 죽으면 열매를 많이 맺는다. (요한복음 12:24)

예수님은 제자들에게 매우 역설적인 생명의 원리를 말씀하십니다. 우리는 보통 살아남기 위해 자신을 지키고, 잃지 않으려고 애쓰며, 가능한 한 손해 보지 않는 삶을 선택하려 합니다. 세상은 우리에게 끊임없이 “지켜라, 잃지 마라, 더 많이 가져라”라고 말합니다. 그러나 예수님은 전혀 다른 길을 보여 주십니다.

예수님은 한 알의 밀이 땅에 떨어져 죽지 않으면 그대로 남아 있지만, 죽으면 많은 열매를 맺는다고 말씀하십니다. 겉으로 보면 씨앗이 땅에 묻히는 것은 끝처럼 보입니다. 어둠 속에 묻히고, 형태가 무너지고, 더 이상 씨앗의 모습이 남지 않기 때문입니다. 그러나 바로 그 순간부터 새로운 생명이 시작됩니다.

신앙도 이와 같습니다. 우리가 붙잡고 있는 것, 포기하지 못하는 것, 지키려고 하는 자존심과 계획들이 내려놓아질 때 하나님께서 새로운 생명을 그 자리에서 자라게 하십니다. 예수님은 이 말씀을 단순한 교훈으로만 하지 않으셨습니다. 예수님 자신이 바로 한 알의 밀알이 되셨습니다.

십자가라는 땅에 떨어져 죽으심으로 수많은 생명의 열매가 시작되었습니다. 그래서 예수님은 이어서 말씀하십니다. “나를 섬기는 사람은 나를 따라야 한다.” 예수님을 따른다는 것은 단순히 예수님을 존경하거나 믿는 것을 넘어, 예수님이 걸어가신 길을 함께 걷는 것을 의미합니다. 그것은 밀알의 길이며, 내려놓음의 길이며, 결국 생명을 낳는 길입니다.

오늘 하루를 시작하며 우리 자신에게 질문해 봅니다. 나는 지금 무엇을 붙잡고 있는가, 그리고 하나님은 무엇을 내려놓으라고 부르고 계신가. 밀알은 자신이 어떤 열매를 맺게 될지 알지 못한 채 땅에 떨어집니다. 그러나 하나님은 그 씨앗을 통해 반드시 생명을 자라게 하십니다.

오늘 우리가 작은 사랑 하나를 심고, 작은 희생 하나를 심고, 작은 순종 하나를 심을 때 하나님은 그 씨앗을 통해 우리가 미처 상상하지 못한 열매를 맺게 하실 것입니다.

“Very truly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.”(John 12:24)

Jesus speaks to His disciples about a deeply paradoxical principle of life. Normally, we try to protect ourselves in order to survive. We try not to lose what we have and choose a way of life that avoids sacrifice whenever possible. The world constantly tells us, “Protect what you have. Don’t lose anything. Gain more.” But Jesus shows a completely different way.

Jesus says that unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains only a single grain; but if it dies, it produces much fruit. On the surface, when a seed is buried in the ground, it seems like the end. It is hidden in darkness, its form breaks down, and the seed as it was can no longer be seen. Yet it is precisely at that moment that new life begins.

Faith is much the same. When the things we cling to—our pride, our plans, and the things we refuse to let go of—are surrendered, God begins to grow new life in that very place. Jesus did not speak these words merely as a teaching. Jesus Himself became the grain of wheat.

By falling into the ground of the cross and dying, the beginning of countless fruits of life was made possible. That is why Jesus continues by saying, “Whoever serves me must follow me.” To follow Jesus means more than simply admiring Him or believing in Him. It means walking the path that He walked. It is the path of the grain of wheat, the path of surrender, and ultimately the path that gives birth to life.

As we begin this day, we ask ourselves a question: What am I holding onto right now? And what might God be calling me to let go of? A grain of wheat falls into the ground without knowing what kind of fruit it will produce. Yet God surely brings life from that seed.

When we plant even a small act of love, a small sacrifice, or a small act of obedience today, God can bring forth fruit beyond anything we could have imagined.
