주이며 선생인 내가 너희의 발을 씻겨 주었으니, 너희도 서로 남의 발을 씻겨 주어야 한다. (요한복음 13:14)

우리들이 세족식으로 기억하는 이 장면은 단순한 겸손의 상징이 아니라 예수님의 자기 이해와 사명의 방식이 드러나는 결정적인 순간입니다. 예수님은 자신이 누구인지, 곧 주와 선생이라는 정체성을 분명히 알고 계셨습니다. 그런데 바로 그 자리에서 가장 낮은 자의 역할을 선택하십니다.

우리는 보통 낮아지면 영향력이 줄어든다고 생각하고, 섬기면 손해 본다고 여기며, 리더는 위에 있어야 한다고 믿습니다. 그러나 예수님은 그 모든 통념을 뒤집으십니다. 정체성이 분명할수록 오히려 더 낮아질 수 있다는 것을 몸으로 보여주십니다.

예수님은 자신의 권위를 포기하신 것이 아니라, 그 권위를 섬김의 방식으로 사용하셨습니다. 그래서 이 행동은 단순한 미담이 아니라 제자도의 기준이 됩니다. “본을 보였다”는 말씀은 선택 가능한 옵션이 아니라 따라야 할 길이라는 의미입니다. 신앙은 생각이나 고백에 머무르지 않고 반드시 삶의 방식으로 드러나야 합니다.

지난 화요일에 서킷미팅에 이 지역 목회자들이 모여서 이야기를 나누고 함께 점심을 먹었습니다. 다들 목회이야기(섬기는 교회가 일본교회, 백인교회, 흑인교회)를 듣다보면 거의 비슷한 이야기와 고민이 있다는 것을 알게됩니다. 한가지 공통점은 역시나 목회자들이 잘 섬기려고 노력한다는데 있는것 같습니다. 피부 색깔이 다르고, 관심이 달라보이는 차이는 목회자의 태도와 관심은 비슷하다는 것에 우리들이 경험하는 세상이 생각보다 단순하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 21세기의 최고의 첡학자라고 불리는 자크 데리다가 정독해서 다 읽은 책인 4권밖에 되지 않는다는 이야기는 책을 다 읽지 않아도 무엇을 이야기하는지를 알수 있다는 인간의 비슷한 통념과 방향에 대한 통찰을 줍니다.

예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻긴 행위는 기존의 질서와 생각을 안전히 뒤짚었습니다. 이 말은 우리들도 늘 노력해야할 리더쉽, 힘 또는 이런 저런 방식의 사용해야할 에너지는 기존의 질서, 내 안에 뿌리 내린 깊은 생각을 버려보는 훈련을 해야한다는 의미입니다. 사순절은 바로 내가 하지 않았던 것을 해보는 용기를 갖는 시간일지도 모릅니다.

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14)

The scene we remember as the washing of the feet is not merely a symbol of humility, but a decisive moment that reveals how Jesus understood Himself and His mission. Jesus clearly knew who He was—Lord and Teacher. Yet in that very position, He chose to take the place of the lowest servant.

We tend to think that lowering ourselves diminishes our influence, that serving others is a loss, and that a leader must remain above. But Jesus overturns all of these assumptions. The clearer one’s identity is, the freer one becomes to go lower. He demonstrates this not through words, but through action.

Jesus did not abandon His authority; rather, He expressed it through service. This act is not simply a beautiful story but a standard for discipleship. When He says He has set an example, it is not optional—it is the way we are called to live. Faith cannot remain as thought or confession; it must take shape in the way we live.

Last Tuesday, I gathered with local pastors for a circuit meeting. As we shared ministry stories—whether serving Japanese, White, or Black congregations—it became clear that our struggles and concerns are remarkably similar. Despite differences in culture or context, there was a shared desire among pastors to serve well. It reminded me that the world we experience may be simpler than we think.

There is a story about Jacques Derrida, often considered one of the most influential thinkers of the 21st century, who is said to have carefully read only a handful of books in full. The point is not about the number of books, but about an insight: even without reading everything, one can discern the common direction of human thought. People, in many ways, are not so different from one another.

What Jesus did in washing His disciples’ feet completely overturned the existing order and expectations. This suggests that the leadership, power, and energy we seek to exercise must be shaped by a willingness to let go of familiar patterns and deeply rooted assumptions within us. Lent may be precisely the season to practice doing what we have not done before—to step into what feels unfamiliar, even uncomfortable.
