우리는 그 말을 듣고 간담이 서늘했고, 당신들 때문에 정신을 잃고 말았습니다. 위로는 하늘에서 아래로는 땅 위에서, 과연 주 당신들의 하나님만이 참 하나님이십니다.(여호수아 2:1)

눈으로 봐도 잘 모르는 걸, "그말을 듣고" 하나님만이 참 하나님이십니다! 라는 기생라합의 고백은 어제 말씀드린것처럼 놀랍습니다. 출애굽한 이스라엘의 40년 여정은 불신과 후회 거기에 불순종까지 가득한 히브리백성들을 훈련시키는 시간이었습니다. 이런 히브리사람들과 달리 여리고성에 연약한 여인은 "듣고" 하나님이 참 하나님이다라는 고백으로 정탐꾼들을 숨겨줍니다.

은혜와 고백은 의외의 장소, 의외의 사람을 통해 이어집니다. 누가복음에서도 이방여인들이 예수를 대하는 태도가 남달랐던 것처럼,(제자들은 늘 깨닫지 못하는데 이 여인들은 늘 척척, 예수님의 의도를 알아채는) 기생라합의 고백은 우리들이 기억해야할 특별함이 있습니다.

신앙생활은 드러나는 것을 따라 가는 여정이 아니라 드러나지 않고 때로는 막막함에서도 예수를 따라 가는 여정입니다. 가끔 막막한 삶에 할말을 일을때가 있습니다. 비교와 상대적 저울질에 자신의 처지에 대해서 비관하는 분들도 있습니다. 세상은 똑같이 기회를 주는 것 같지만, 생각보다 공평하지 않다는 것을 잘 압니다. 공평하지 않은 것을 지나칠 수 없는 이유는 스스로 최선을 다한 열심을 가볍게 다루는 것에 그리고 내 자식이라면 또는 자신이라면 지나치지 않을 것을 너무 무관심하게 무시하는 것에 그 막막함은 깊이를 더해갑니다.

들려오는 이야기는 내가 들은 이야기와 다를때도 있습니다. 그러면 당황하지만, 삶이 늘 이렇다는 것에 마음을 열어놓았더니 크게 문제가 되지 않습니다.

우리들의 삶은 이처럼 작은것에 흔들리고, 무너지고 때로는 이로 인해 낙심하지만, 하나님의 역사는 예상치 못한 상황에서 역사하신다는 사실을 기억하고, 주님과 동행이라는 특별한 은혜에 마음을 쓸 수 있는 신앙적 여유가 있기를 바라는 마음입니다.

오늘 우리들은 "듣고", "하나님만이 참 하나님이십니다"라고 고백한 기생라합의 고백 그리고 정탐꿈들을 숨겨진 용기를 기억하고 하루를 보내시기를 부탁드립니다. 큰 역사는 작은 고백과 용기를 통해 일어납니다.

"When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone's courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below." (Joshua 2:11)

When Rahab declared, "We heard of it and our hearts melted… for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below," her confession was truly astonishing. As mentioned yesterday, Israel's forty-year wilderness journey was marked by disbelief, regret, and disobedience—a prolonged training ground for faith. Yet unlike those Israelites, a vulnerable woman in Jericho simply heard and believed. Without witnessing any miracle herself, Rahab proclaimed that "the LORD is the only true God" and risked her life to hide the spies.

Grace and confession often emerge from unexpected places and unexpected people. In the Gospel of Luke, we see how Gentile women frequently understood Jesus better than His own disciples. While the disciples struggled to grasp His heart, these women discerned His intentions and responded with faith. Rahab's confession stands as one of these extraordinary moments that the people of God must remember.

Faith is not a journey that follows what is already visible or certain. It is the journey of following Jesus even through what is unseen, uncertain, and sometimes overwhelming. There are times when life feels so heavy that words fail us. Some feel discouraged by comparison or weighed down by the injustices of the world. We know well that life is not always fair—and the pain deepens when our sincere efforts go unrecognized or when others show indifference where we would have offered care.

Sometimes what we hear doesn't align with what we believe or have experienced. It can unsettle us—but when we accept that life often unfolds this way, peace begins to take root. Our lives may tremble over small things, and we may lose heart. Yet God's work is often revealed in unexpected moments. May we hold fast to the grace of walking with the Lord and live with hearts that trust His hidden work even in the silence.

Let us remember Rahab's confession—"We heard... and we know the LORD alone is God"—and her courage to hide the spies. Great miracles begin with small confessions of faith and courageous acts of trust.
