"나는 당신이 누구인지 압니다. 하나님께서 보내신 거룩한 분입니다." (눅 4:34b)

가버나움 회당은 갈릴리 호수 북서쪽에 위치하고 있습니다. 지금도 보존이 잘 되어 있고, 회당의 자리도 그대로 남아있습니다. 생각보다 번성했던 마을이고 그곳의 회당은 유대종교에 있어서 중요한 자리였다는 의미입니다.

이곳에 예수님이 사람들을 가르쳤고, 귀신들린 사람을 만납니다. 귀신들린자가 예수님을 보고는 "왜 우리를 간섭하십니까?"라는 고백은 이미 드러나 예수님의 존재에 대한 고백이기도 합니다.

성경은 예상치 못한 인물을 통해 예수가 누구인가를 드러냅니다. 다른 사람들은 침묵하는 가운데 귀신들린 자의 고백으로 예수님이 하나님이 보내신 거룩한 분이라는 것이 드러나고 있습니다.

귀신들린자의 고백이지만, 마가복음은 담담하게 이 기록을 통해 예수님은 이런분이시다는 것을 이야기하고 있습니다.

몇일전에 문찬호 성도의 아버지, 강경숙 성도의 시아버지가 뇌출혈로 병원에 입원했습니다. 차도가 좋아 이런 저런 시술을 하고 계시다고 연락을 받았습니다. 기도하며 그 시간을 보내는 가정을 위해서 기도하면서, 아픔과 어려움을 나누는 것에 우리는 마음을 열고 이런 삶에 동행하는 것에 마음을 쓰고 있다는 것에 감사했습니다. 차도가 좋다는 것도 다행이고 이를 위해 기도제목을 나눠주신것도 감사했습니다.

슬아집사는 현재 허리가 안좋아져서 다리의 신경이 말라버리는 상황이라고 합니다. 잘못하면 다를 못쓸수 있을 정도로 치료가 더뎌서 수술을 결정했다고 합니다.

이 두 가정의 상황에서 예수님의 능력, 오늘 본문에 등장하는 권위에 대해서 생각해봅니다. 병든자를 고치신다는 의미는 삶속에 예수님의 간섭이 시작될때 일어나는 사건입니다. 그리고 이때 일어나는 놀라운 일들은 예수가 누구인지를 고백하는 사건으로 이어집니다.

다르게 표현하면 우리들의 삶은 예수가 누구인지를 드러내는 삶이라는 것을 기억해야합니다.

"I know who you are — the Holy One of God." (Luke 4:34b)

The synagogue at Capernaum sits on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee. It is remarkably well preserved even today — the foundation and layout still visible, still standing. Capernaum was a more prosperous town than we might imagine, and its synagogue held real significance within Jewish religious life.

It was here that Jesus taught the people — and encountered a man with an unclean spirit. The man's cry, why are you interfering with us?, is itself already a confession. It acknowledges that Jesus has arrived, that his presence changes things, that something has been disrupted just by his being there.

Scripture has a pattern of revealing who Jesus is through unexpected voices. While others remain silent or merely marvel, it is the man with the unclean spirit who speaks the clearest truth: I know who you are — the Holy One of God. Luke records this without drama, almost matter-of-factly. And through it, the Gospel quietly says: this is who Jesus is.

There is something worth sitting with here. The confession is accurate. The one who speaks it is not a disciple, not a religious leader, not someone seeking to honor Jesus. And yet the words are right. Knowing who Jesus is, and following him, are two different things.

A few days ago, we received word that the father of Chanho Moon and the father-in-law of Gyeongsuk Kang was hospitalized after a cerebral hemorrhage. We heard that he has been showing improvement and that procedures are underway. Praying for that family through this time, I found myself grateful — grateful that they shared the need, grateful that we have a community where difficult things can be brought into the open and held together. The fact that there is progress is a relief. The fact that they let us carry it with them is a gift.

We also heard that Deaconess Seula is dealing with serious back problems — the nerves in her leg are being affected, and recovery has been slow enough that surgery has been decided. The situation is serious.

With both of these families on my heart, I find myself coming back to today's passage — to the authority of Jesus, and what it means that he heals. Healing, in the Gospels, happens when Jesus steps into a life and begins to move. And what follows those moments of healing is always the same: people are left asking who is this? The works of Jesus become the occasion for the confession of Jesus.

Which means our lives can do the same thing. The way we live — how we carry one another's pain, how we show up in hard moments, how we pray — can become the occasion for the same question. Who is this Jesus? Our lives are meant to be places where that answer becomes visible.
