"참새 두 마리가 한 앗사리온에 팔리지 않느냐 그러나 너희 아버지께서 허락하지 아니하시면 그 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라" (마 10:29, 새번역)

예수님이 제자들을 파송하시면서 하시는 말씀입니다. 앞으로 겪게 될 일들을 미리 말씀하십니다. 가족 안에서도 분쟁이 생길 것이고, 미움을 받을 것이고, 쉽지 않을 것이라고 하십니다. 위로의 말씀 같지 않습니다. 오히려 현실을 그대로 말씀하십니다. 그런데 그 사이사이에 "두려워하지 마라"는 말씀이 세 번 나옵니다. 두려워하지 마라, 두려워하지 마라, 두려워하지 마라.

같은 말을 세 번 하신다는 것이 의미심장합니다. 한 번으로 충분했을 텐데. 예수님이 제자들이 두려워할 것을 알고 계셨다는 것입니다. 두려움이 없는 사람에게 두려워하지 말라고 할 필요가 없습니다. 두려울 것이 분명히 있다는 것입니다. 그런데 그럼에도 불구하고 두려워하지 말라고 하십니다.

첫 번째 두려워하지 말라는 이유가 특이합니다. "감추인 것이 드러나지 않을 것이 없고, 숨긴 것이 알려지지 않을 것이 없다." 진실은 결국 드러난다는 것입니다. 지금 당장은 억울하고, 오해받고, 잘못 알려진 것 같아도, 결국 드러날 것이라는 것입니다. 시간이 하나님 편이라는 것입니다.

두 번째는, "참새 두 마리가 한 앗사리온에 팔리지 않느냐." 앗사리온은 당시 가장 작은 동전입니다. 참새 두 마리가 그 작은 동전 하나에 팔린다는 것입니다. 가치로 따지면 별것 아닌 존재입니다. 그런데 예수님이 말씀하십니다. "너희 아버지께서 허락하지 아니하시면 그 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 아니하리라." 가장 작고 보잘것없는 참새 하나도 하나님의 허락 없이는 땅에 떨어지지 않는다는 것입니다.

그리고 바로 이어서 말씀하십니다. "너희에게는 머리털까지 다 세신 바 되었나니 두려워하지 마라 너희는 많은 참새보다 귀하니라." 머리털까지 세신다는 것입니다. 지금 내 머리털이 몇 개인지 나는 모릅니다. 그런데 하나님은 아신다는 것입니다. 그만큼 세밀하게 알고 계신다는 것입니다. 그 하나님이 우리를 참새보다 귀하게 여기신다는 것입니다.

작게 느껴지는 순간들이 있죠. 뭔가를 열심히 하는데 아무도 알아주지 않는 것 같은 순간, 내가 여기서 하는 일이 의미가 있는 것인지 모르겠는 순간, 그냥 지나쳐지는 것 같은 느낌. 그런데 예수님이 말씀하십니다. 하나님이 세고 계신다고. 머리털까지. 그냥 지나치시는 것이 없다는 것입니다.

세 번째 두려워하지 말라는 말씀 다음에 예수님이 이렇게 말씀하십니다. "누구든지 사람 앞에서 나를 시인하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 시인할 것이요." 사람 앞에서 예수님을 시인하는 것. 요즘 이것이 점점 어색해지는 시대입니다. 종교 이야기를 꺼내면 불편해하는 분위기 속에서, 예수 믿는다고 말하는 것이 용기가 필요한 일이 되어가고 있습니다. 그런데 예수님은 말씀하십니다. 네가 나를 시인하면, 나도 너를 시인하겠다고. 이것이 두려워하지 않아도 되는 가장 큰 이유입니다.

오늘 월드컵 예선 3차전이 있습니다. 다들 이길걸로 예상하는데 축구공이 둥글다는 걸 생각해보면, 늘 만만한 경기는 없습니다. 왜 함께 모여서 응원을 하자고 보채냐면, 그래도 이럴때 함께 마주하는 시간이 우리를 더욱 단단하게 만들것이라는 생각때문입니다.

먼 미국에서 살아가면서 "두려워하지 않는 이유"는 교회공동체에서 함께 마음을 나눌 수 있는 형제와 자매가 있기때문입니다. 오늘 저녁6시, 남선교회, 여선교회방에 나눈 준비물들을 챙겨서 모이시죠

묵상

하나님은 참새 하나도 세시고, 내 머리털도 세십니다. 그분 앞에서 아무것도 지나쳐지지 않습니다.

중보기도

1. 교회학교, 유스, 청년, 장년에 이르는 모든 사역이 하나님의 인도하심으로 든든히 이루어지도록 기도해주세요.

2. 오클랜드 빌딩 매각을 위해서 기도해주세요! 하나님의 은혜로 모든 과정이 순조롭게 진행되도록 기도해주세요. 무엇보다 지치지 않도록 기도해주세요.

"Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care." (Matthew 10:29)

Jesus is sending out his disciples. He tells them what is coming — conflict even within families, hatred, difficulty. It doesn't sound like a pep talk. It sounds like an honest description of what lies ahead. And woven into all of it, three times, comes the same phrase: Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid.

Saying the same thing three times means something. Once would have been enough if the point were simply informational. But Jesus knows his disciples will be afraid. You don't tell someone not to be afraid unless there is something genuinely frightening ahead. And yet — do not be afraid.

The first reason not to fear is an unusual one. There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. Truth eventually comes to light. Whatever feels unfair right now, whatever has been misunderstood or misrepresented — it will come out. Time is on God's side.

The second reason is the sparrows. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? A penny — the smallest coin of the day. Two sparrows for one coin. By any measure of value, barely worth counting. And yet Jesus says: not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care. Not a single one of the least significant creatures falls without God's knowledge and permission.

And then immediately: Even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows. The hairs of your head are numbered. I don't know how many I have. But God does. That is the level of detail at which he knows us. And the God who counts that carefully considers us worth more than many sparrows.

There are moments when life feels small. Working hard and feeling like no one notices. Wondering whether what you are doing here actually matters. The sense of being passed over. And Jesus says: God is counting. Down to the last hair. Nothing slips past him.

The third do not be afraid comes just before this: Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. Acknowledging Jesus in front of people is becoming increasingly awkward in this age. Bringing up faith in a room where it creates discomfort, saying out loud that you believe in Jesus — it takes a certain courage now. And Jesus says: acknowledge me, and I will acknowledge you. That is the deepest reason not to fear.

Tonight is Korea's third World Cup qualifier match. Everyone seems to expect a win — but the ball is round, and there are no easy games. The reason I keep pushing for us to gather and watch together is this: moments like these, when we sit side by side and share the same experience, make us more solid as a community. Living far from home in America, one of the reasons not to be afraid is that we have brothers and sisters in this church with whom we can share our hearts. Tonight at 6 PM — bring what was assigned in the men's and women's ministry group chats, and let's gather.

Reflection

God counts every sparrow and every hair on our heads. Nothing passes before him unnoticed.

Intercessory Prayer

1. Please pray that every level of ministry — children, youth, young adults, and the congregation — would be firmly established under God's guidance.

2. Please pray for the sale of the Oakland building. Pray that the entire process moves forward smoothly by God's grace. And above all, pray that those involved do not grow weary.
