[예수께서] 곧 그들에게 말씀하셨다. “안심하여라. 나다. 두려워하지 말아라.”(마 14:27)
오늘은 재의 수요일입니다. 이마에 재를 얹으며 우리는 “너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아갈 것이라”는 말씀을 기억합니다. 앞으로 40일간 우리는 사순절기로 접어듭니다. 특별함으로 기억하시는 시간이라기보다는 우리의 모든 감각을 하나님께로 향하는 거룩한 시간을 보내려고 우리들은 노력할것입니다.
오늘 본문은 거센 바람과 파도 한가운데 서 계신 예수님을 보여줍니다. 제자들은 밤 사경에 풍랑을 만나 두려움에 사로잡혔고, 예수님을 보고도 유령이라 생각하며 더욱 떨었습니다. 그때 주님은 말씀하십니다. “안심하라 나니 두려워하지 말라.” 재를 뒤집어쓴 우리의 현실 속에도, 흔들리는 배와 같은 삶의 자리에도 주님은 동일하게 다가오십니다.
베드로는 그 음성을 듣고 물 위로 발을 내딛습니다. 그러나 바람을 보고 두려워하는 순간, 그는 물에 빠져들기 시작합니다. 사순절은 바로 이 지점을 묵상하는 시간입니다. 우리는 주님을 바라보다가도 어느새 바람을 바라봅니다. 사역의 염려, 교회의 미래, 가정의 문제, 건강과 재정의 부담, 학업의 어려움이 파도처럼 밀려옵니다.
하지만 주님은 물 위를 걷는 능력보다 더 중요한 것을 보여주십니다. 그것은 빠져드는 우리를 붙잡는 손입니다. “곧 예수께서 손을 내밀어 그를 붙잡으시며.” 재의 수요일은 우리가 스스로 설 수 없음을 고백하는 날이며, 동시에 붙들어 주시는 손을 경험하는 은혜의 시작입니다.
예수님께서 배에 오르시자 바람이 그쳤습니다. 풍랑이 멈춘 자리에서 제자들은 비로소 고백합니다. “진실로 하나님의 아들이로소이다.” 고난과 두려움은 우리의 믿음을 시험하지만, 동시에 우리의 고백을 깊게 만듭니다. 사순절의 40일은 단순한 절제가 아니라, 폭풍 가운데 계신 주님을 더 선명히 알아가는 여정입니다. 재의 표식은 끝이 아니라 시작입니다. 흙과 같은 존재임을 인정할 때, 우리는 하나님 아들의 임재를 더욱 또렷이 보게 됩니다.
오늘 저녁 재의 수요일로 예배당에 모입니다. 재를 뒤짚어 쓰고 거룩한 여정의 첫걸음임입니다. 시간을 내서가 아니라, 당연히 그 자리에서 시작하는 사순절기에 우리들의 몸과 마음을 드리는 시간임을 기억하시고 함께해주세요

지금 내 삶에서 나를 가장 두렵게 만드는 ‘바람’은 무엇이며, 나는 그것을 바라보고 있습니까, 아니면 그 위를 걸어 오시는 주님의 음성 “안심하라 나니 두려워하지 말라”를 붙들고 있습니까?
중봄기도
어제 프리젠테이션을 잘 마쳤습니다. 영상을 잘 만들어서 준비했는데 시스템이 연약한 관계로 간신히 진행을 했습니다. 영상을 보고 2년안에 자립할거라고 이야기했습니다. 다들 눈이 둥그레졌고, 그랜트가 사역의 중심이 아니라, 교회와 성도들이 함께 꿈꾸는 것이 우리 사역의 중심이라고 했습니다. 7월부터 1년간 10만불을 지원하기로 했고, 1년은 우리들이 최선을 다해 새로운 사역에 힘을 써야합니다.

“Immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.’” (Matthew 14:27)
Today is Ash Wednesday. As we place ashes on our foreheads, we remember the words, “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Beginning today, we enter the forty days of Lent. Rather than simply marking it as a special season, we seek to devote this time as holy days—intentionally turning all our senses and attention toward God.
Today’s passage shows Jesus standing in the midst of strong winds and waves. In the fourth watch of the night, the disciples were battered by the storm and gripped with fear. Even when they saw Jesus, they thought He was a ghost and were terrified. In that moment, the Lord spoke: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” Into our ash-covered reality, into the fragile boats of our lives, Jesus still comes to us in the same way.
Peter hears that voice and steps out onto the water. But the moment he notices the wind and becomes afraid, he begins to sink. Lent invites us to reflect on this very moment. We start by fixing our eyes on the Lord, yet before long we find ourselves staring at the wind. Concerns about ministry, the future of the church, family struggles, health and financial burdens, and academic challenges crash over us like waves.
Yet the Lord shows us something even more important than the power to walk on water. He reveals the hand that reaches out to save those who are sinking. “Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and caught him.” Ash Wednesday is the day we confess that we cannot stand on our own. At the same time, it is the beginning of grace—the experience of the hand that holds us fast.
When Jesus climbed into the boat, the wind died down. In the stillness after the storm, the disciples finally confessed, “Truly you are the Son of God.” Trials and fear test our faith, but they also deepen our confession. The forty days of Lent are not merely about restraint; they are a journey toward seeing more clearly the Lord who stands in the midst of the storm. The mark of ashes is not the end—it is the beginning. When we acknowledge that we are dust, we see more clearly the presence of the Son of God.
Tonight we will gather in the sanctuary for our Ash Wednesday service. With ashes upon us, we take the first step of this holy journey. Not because we simply “make time,” but because this is where Lent rightfully begins—offering our bodies and hearts to God. Please remember this and join us.
Reflection
What is the “wind” in your life right now that causes you the greatest fear? Are you focusing on the wind, or are you holding onto the voice of the Lord who walks over it, saying, “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid”?
Intercessory Prayer
We completed yesterday’s presentation well. We had prepared carefully with a well-made video, though the system was weak and we managed to proceed just barely. After watching the video, we shared our vision to become self-sustaining within two years. Many were surprised. We emphasized that grants are not the center of our ministry; rather, the shared dream of the church and its members is the true center. We were approved for $100,000 in support for one year beginning in July. During this coming year, we must do our very best to strengthen and expand this new ministry.
Please pray for those who are ill and for those whose health has weakened. In particular, Rev. Deok-Soo Kim’s widow, Mrs. Tae-Jung Kim, was recently diagnosed with lymphoma that has spread aggressively. She will decide within the next day or two whether to begin chemotherapy. Mrs. Tae-Jung Kim is related by marriage to Kwon Sa Namhee Heo. Please keep her in your prayers.
