백부장이 대답하였다. “주님, 나는 주님을 내 집으로 모셔들일 만한 자격이 없습니다. 그저 한 마디 말씀만 해주십시오. 그러면 내 종이 나을 것입니다 (마 8:8)

마태복음 8장은 예수님께서 산상수훈을 마치신 직후의 이야기입니다. 말씀으로 하나님 나라를 선포하신 예수님은 이제 삶의 자리로 내려오셔서, 실제 사람들의 고통과 경계를 마주하십니다.

먼저 나병 환자가 예수님 앞에 나아옵니다. 그는 사회적으로, 종교적으로 완전히 배제된 사람이었습니다. “주님, 원하시면 저를 깨끗하게 하실 수 있습니다.” 이 고백에는 절박함과 함께, 예수님의 권위에 대한 온전한 신뢰가 담겨 있습니다. 예수님은 그를 피하지 않으시고, 손을 대어 말씀하십니다. “내가 원한다. 깨끗하게 되어라.” 예수님의 치유는 능력 이전에 관계의 회복에서 시작됩니다.

이어서 등장하는 사람은 로마 백부장입니다. 그는 이방인이며, 점령군의 장교라는 점에서 유대 사회의 ‘밖’에 있는 인물입니다. 그러나 그는 예수님께 나아와 자신의 종을 위해 간청합니다. 더 놀라운 것은 그의 믿음입니다. “말씀만 하셔도 나을 것입니다.” 그는 예수님의 권위를 군대의 명령 체계에 비유하며, 예수님의 말씀 한마디면 충분하다고 고백합니다.

예수님은 이 믿음을 보시고 놀라십니다. 그리고 선언하십니다. 하나님 나라에서는 혈통이나 자격이 아니라, 믿음이 중심이 된다고. 안에 있다고 여겼던 사람들이 밖에 머무를 수 있고, 밖에 있다고 여겼던 사람들이 잔치 자리에 앉게 될 수 있다고 말씀하십니다.

훌륭한 믿음은 예상치 못한 사람 또는 장소에서 발견할때 우리를 겸손하게 합니다.

2026년 속회는 작년과 같이, 변동없이 구성하려다 작년 새로오신 분들을 추가하다보니까 몇개 새로운 속회를 만들어 야하는 상황이 되었습니다. 감사한일입니다. 그러다보니 작년과 같이 구성하는 것이 쉽지 않겠되었습니다. 대충 머리속으로 생각한것과 실제 한 사람 한 사람을 생각을 하다보니 변화를 줄수 밖에 없게되었습니다. 2월 연합속회로 모이니, 신중하고 지혜롭게 잘 구성해보려고 합니다.

어제 청년개강예배를 드렸습니다.최근에 노숙자들이 자리를 차지 하지 못하도록 시에서 철조망을 높게 세워나서 안전하고 깨끗하게 관리된 트리니티 채플을 보면서, 청년들이 공부도 하고 신앙도 나누는 좋은 장소라는 생각이 들었습니다. 저도 오랫만에 청년들과 예배하면서 이런 저런 생각으로 하루를 마무리했습니다.

어쩌면 우리들이 예상하지 못한 나병환자 또는 백부장같을지 모른다는 생각이 들었습니다. 하나님은 여전히 열심히 일하시고 계십니다.

벌써 2026년 한달이 지났는데 어떤 마음으로 한달을 보내고 어떤 마음으로 나머지 시간을 준비하시나요?

The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”(Matthew 8:8)

Matthew chapter 8 takes place immediately after Jesus finishes the Sermon on the Mount. Having proclaimed the kingdom of God through his teaching, Jesus now comes down into the ordinary places of life, where he encounters real human suffering and real boundaries.

First, a man with leprosy comes before Jesus. He is someone completely excluded—socially and religiously. He says, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” In this confession, we hear both deep desperation and complete trust in Jesus’ authority. Jesus does not avoid him. Instead, he reaches out, touches him, and says, “I am willing. Be clean.” Jesus’ healing begins not simply with power, but with the restoration of relationship.

Next, a Roman centurion appears. As a Gentile and an officer of the occupying army, he stands clearly outside the Jewish community. Yet he approaches Jesus on behalf of his servant and pleads for him. What is even more striking is his faith. “Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.” He compares Jesus’ authority to a military chain of command and confesses that a single word from Jesus is more than enough.

Jesus is amazed by this faith. Then he declares that in the kingdom of God, it is not lineage or status that matters, but faith. Those who assume they are inside may find themselves outside, while those thought to be outsiders may take their seats at the banquet.

Discovering great faith in unexpected people or places humbles us.

As we prepare for our 2026 cell groups, we initially planned to keep the same structure as last year. However, as we welcomed new members who joined last year, we found ourselves needing to form several new groups. This is truly something to be grateful for. At the same time, it has made it difficult to keep things exactly the same. What seemed simple in theory became more complex as we thoughtfully considered each individual person. As we gather for our joint cell group meeting in February, we hope to organize everything carefully and wisely.

Yesterday, we held the opening worship service for our young adult ministry. Seeing Trinity Chapel—now clean and well-maintained, with taller fences installed by the city to prevent encampments—I was reminded what a good space it is for young people to study, worship, and share their faith. Worshiping together with the young adults for the first time in a while, I ended the day with many reflections on my heart.

Perhaps we ourselves are more like the leper or the centurion than we expect. God is still actively at work among us.
