그 삼분의 일은 내가 불 속에 집어 넣어서 은을 단련하듯이 단련하고, 금을 시험하듯이 시험하겠다. 그들은 내 이름을 부르고, 나는 그들에게 응답할 것이다. 나는 그들을 ‘내 백성’이라고 부르고, 그들은 나 주를 ‘우리 하나님’이라고 부를 것이다.” (스가랴 13:9)

순식간에 깊은 가을을 맞이하고 있습니다. 가끔 의식하는 시간의 개념보다 빠르게 시간이 흐를때 당황할때가 있습니다. "아! 벌써..." 이런 탄식이 나올때즈음이면 삶에 대한 경이로움에 다시 겸손하게 자신의 삶을 돌아보게 되는 것 같습니다.

어느덧 어리다고 데려온 강아지가 4년을 훌쩍 넘었더니 성년에서 중년을 지나는 것 같습니다. 예전같지 않은 움직임이 느껴지는 순간 남은 시간을 계산해 봤습니다. 그리 길지 않은 시간이라는 생각에 좀더 애정을 줘야겠다는 생각을 하게됩니다.

삶이 늘 이런 후회와 그랬더라면을 반복하며 사는 것 같습니다. 2025년은 이제 두달 남았고, 미리 년말계획들이 하나 하나 세워져가고 있습니다. 이런 계획들이 새해를 기대하게도 하지만, 한편으로는 지금 보내고 있는 시간이 부디 느긋하게 지나가기를 바라는 마음도 있습니다.

스가랴의 시대는 시간이 속히 지나가, 메시야의 시간이 즉 지금의 고난을 단단히 이겨내고 새로운 하나님의 역사의 창이 열리기를 바라는 고난의 시대에 기록된 성경말씀입니다. 이럴때 이스라엘은 비록 포로기 이후 연약함을 뿌리 깊이 경험했어도 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님이 함께하신다는 것을 잊지 않고 다시 정의롭고 순수한 신앙을 회복하기를 기대하는 내용으로 가득합니다.

시간이 차고 오르면 모든 것이 든든히 채워지는 것이 당연하다고 생각하겠지만, 시간이 갈수록 느껴지는 부족함은 채워지지 않는 부족함을 경험하는 것은 시간을 결코 우리를 성숙하게 하는 수단이 아니고 지금 마주하는 지금의 순간에 결심을 따라 성숙함은 이루어지는 것 같습니다.

내년이면 열린교회 40주년입니다. 교회도 중년이 되었습니다. 처음 열린교회에 출석하신 분들도 중년을 넘어 노년이 되어가고, 이 시간의 채워짐에 따라 교회도 채워져 가고 여기에 한가지 더 기대하는 것은 성숙하고 성장하는 열린교회가 되기를 바랍니다.

"나는 그들을 ‘내 백성’이라고 부르고, 그들은 나 주를 ‘우리 하나님’이라고 부를 것이다" 이 고백이 간단해 보이지만, 깊은 성숙과 은혜를 통해 가능합니다. 이 고백으로 채워지는 열린교회와 성도들이 되기를 바랍니다.

"I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are my people'; and they will say, 'The Lord is our God.'"(Zechariah 13:9)

We have suddenly entered the deep autumn season. Sometimes time passes faster than our awareness of it, and we find ourselves startled by the thought, "Ah! Already?" In such moments, we are reminded of life's fleeting nature and turn humbly to reflect once again.

The little puppy we once brought home as a small companion is now over four years old—already passing from youth into middle age. When I notice its slower movements, I find myself calculating how many years we may have left together. Realizing that the time may not be long, I feel moved to give even more affection while I can.

Life often follows a pattern of regret and "I should have…" Now, with only two months left in 2025, year-end plans are slowly taking shape. These plans make us look forward to the new year, yet part of me wishes the present time would slow down—so we can savor it with gratitude.

The time of Zechariah was also a time of waiting and hardship—when the people longed for the coming of the Messiah, hoping that their present suffering would soon pass and that a new chapter of God's story would unfold. Though Israel had experienced the deep weakness of life after exile, they still held fast to the truth that God was with them, and they longed to restore a pure and righteous faith once more.

We often think that maturity comes naturally with the passing of time. But the more time passes, the more we realize that what is lacking cannot be filled by time alone. True maturity is not the result of time but of the decisions and commitments we make in the present moment.

Next year marks the 40th anniversary of Yeolin Church. Our church, too, has reached middle age. Those who first gathered here are now entering their later years. As time fills our lives, the church also fills with experience and grace. What we now hope for is not only fullness but maturity and growth—that Yeolin Church may become a community that deepens in faith and grace.

The confession—"I will call them my people, and they will say, 'The Lord is our God'"—may sound simple, but it comes only through deep maturity and grace. May this confession fill our church and every member of our community.

Intercessory Prayer

• Pray that all the ministries of the church may move in a unified direction. May all servants of God work together with one heart, embracing change and renewal where needed.

• Pray that every recurring event will not be just another routine, but a time of true offering to God—a moment of worship and dedication.

• Pray especially for the Dinner Church this Saturday, and for the ongoing English Worship Planting Project—that every preparation would be made with zeal, wisdom, and joy.
