내가 내 집에 진을 둘러쳐서, 적군이 오가지 못하게 하겠다. 내가 지켜 보고 있으니, 압제자가 내 백성을 침범하지 못할 것이다.” (스가랴 9:8)

Viva La Church 세미나는 이번에 처음으로 서부지역 각 연회에서 교회개척과 부흥을 담당하는 스텝들이 모여서 연합으로 준비한 행사입니다. 처음이라 예산이 없으니 순전히 인맥으로 강사를 초대했고 강사들은 강사비를 받지 않고 참여했습니다. 서부지역, 시애틀, 오레곤, 덴버와 콜로라도 아리조나 LA, 샌디에고 하와이, 알라스카 지역의 목회자들과 평신도들이 250명 모였습니다. Viva La church를 의역하면 "교회여 일어나라"입니다. 늘 Social Justice만 부르짖던 서부지역에서 교회가 살아나지 않으면 존재의 위협을 느끼는 위기속에서 다시 원래의 복음의 능력을 회복하자는 취지로 준비한 세미나입니다.

시차로 힘들었는데, 강의가 좋았고, 저희 디너처치와 나눌 이야기들이 많아졌습니다. 더불어 고민하는 것은 비슷하고, 이를 해결하기 위한 노력도 비슷하다는 것에 지금 열린교회의 방향이 틀리지 않았다는 것 거기에 누군가에게는 우리들의 사역이 좋은 영향을 미칠수 있다는 것에 대한 기대와 확인을 할 수 있었습니다.

저에게 가장 큰 관심은 목회자가 아는 만큼 성도들도 알게 하는 것, 그리고 목회자가 고민하는 만큼 성도들도 함께 고민하는 것입니다. 교회라는 이름 자체가 "한사람, 목회자"만을 의미하는 것이 아니라, 두세사람이 모인 자리에 주님이 함께하신다는 것처럼 공동체를 의미합니다. 우리들이 요즘 누가복음을 읽으면서 기억해야할 것은 교회는 기도를 통해 성령의 임재를 경험한 자리에서 일어나는 역사의 증거입니다. 그러니 열린교회도 함께하는 모든 성도들이 기도를 통해 성령의 임재를 경험하여 모인 교회공동체라는 확신을 가져야할것 같습니다.

스가랴의 메시지는 반복적으로 하나님의 보호와 주권을 강조하고 있습니다. 그리고 인간의 힘이 아니라, 전적으로 하나님의 눈과 손길로 그분의 백성들을 보호하신다는 것을 기억하면 우리들의 힘과 에너지가 어디로 향해야 하는지를 잘 보여줍니다.

무엇을 하든, 예배든, 기도모임이든, 성경공부든, 함께 밥을 나누든, 회의로 모이든 우리들은 겸손하게 하나님이 눈동자같이 그분의 손길로 이끌어가신다는 것을 기억하며 함께해야합니다. 그래야 교회입니다.

Viva La Church

The Viva La Church Seminar was, for the first time, a joint event organized by church-planting and revitalization leaders from various annual conferences across the Western Jurisdiction. Because it was our inaugural gathering, we had no budget—so we relied entirely on personal networks to invite speakers, all of whom participated without honorarium.

About 250 pastors and lay leaders gathered from across the western regions—Seattle, Oregon, Denver and Colorado, Arizona, Los Angeles, San Diego, Hawaii, and Alaska.

The phrase "Viva La Church" can be interpreted as "Church, Rise Up!" It expresses the conviction that in a time when the Western Jurisdiction has focused primarily on social justice, the Church must now recover the original power of the Gospel in the face of an existential crisis. That is the heart of this seminar.

Reflection and Connection

Though I was physically tired from jet lag, the lectures were inspiring, and I came away with many insights to share with our Dinner Church. We discovered that many of our challenges are shared by others—and so are our efforts to overcome them. It was a moment of affirmation: Yeolin Church's direction is not mistaken, and our ministry may already be bringing positive influence to others.

For me, the greatest interest lies in this: that as much as pastors know, the congregation also comes to know, and as deeply as pastors wrestle with faith and ministry, the congregation wrestles alongside them.

The word "Church" does not simply refer to one person—a pastor—but to a community where two or three gather and the Lord is present among them.

As we read through the Gospel of Luke these days, let us remember: The Church is the testimony of history that arises where people experience the presence of the Holy Spirit through prayer.

Thus, Yeolin Church must also live with this conviction: that we are a community formed and sustained by the Holy Spirit's presence experienced through prayer.

The Message of Zechariah

Zechariah's message repeatedly emphasizes God's protection and sovereignty. It reminds us that it is not by human power, but by God's watchful eyes and guiding hands that His people are kept safe. When we remember this truth, we can clearly see where our energy and focus should go.

Whatever we do—whether worship, prayer meetings, Bible study, shared meals, or committee meetings—we must do it with humility, remembering that God leads us tenderly as the apple of His eye and by His hand. Only then can we truly be called the Church.

1. This Sunday will be a busy one. After worship, we'll have small group meetings, a church-wide cleanup, and a leadership council meeting. Please pray that in every part of these gatherings, we may experience the hand of God.
