22“주 하나님이 말한다. 내가 백향목 끝에 돋은 가지를 꺾어다가 심겠다. 내가 그 나무의 맨 꼭대기에 돋은어린 가지들 가운데서 연한 가지를 하나 꺾어다가, 내가 직접 높이 우뚝 솟은 산 위에 심겠다. 23 이스라엘의 높은 산 위에 내가 그 가지를 심어 놓으면, 거기에서 가지가 뻗어 나오고, 열매를 맺으며, 아름다운 백향목이 될 것이다. 그 때에는 온갖 새들이 그 나무에 깃들이고, 온갖 날짐승들이 그 가지 끝에서 보금자리를 만들 것이다. (에스겔 17:22-23)

지난주 교회 예배실의 영상문제를 테스트하다, 교회를 이전 하기 전부터 오린다 교회본당에 달려있던 TV들이 모두 고장난것을 확인하였습니다. 예전부터 교회를 지키던 물건들이라 오래된 먼지를 닦아내고 설치해서 사용했었는데 아무래도 세월의 무게 그리고 빈번한 사용에 탈이 난것 같습니다. 고장난 TV를 확인하다 유아실에 걸린 TV가 영상연결에 하자가 있다는 것도 발견했고, 나름 교회에 설치된 영상기기들에 대한 대대적인 점검을 하게되었습니다.

급하게 대체할 TV를 사서 설치하는데 두개중 하나가 박스를 개봉해보니 모니터에 금이 가 있습니다. 반품과 교환을 하고는 오늘 드디어 몇일만에 정상적인 작동을 확인하려고 합니다.

문제가 발생하면 왜 이런 일이..라는 생각도 들고, 왜 하필 이때 이런 마음도 들때가 있을 것입니다. 그런데 이런 문제를 해결하다보면 알지못했던 지식이 쌓이고, 몰랐던것을 알게됩니다. 굳이 이런걸 알아야 하나라는 생각도 들테지만 이제 이런 비슷한 문제를 해결할 능력이 생기는 것입니다.

에스겔은 시드기야가 바벨론왕과 맺은 언약을 깨고 애굽의 도움을 요청한것에 대해 배신이라고 규정합니다. 그결과 바벨론에 의해 이스라엘이 완전히 멸망 했기 때문입니다. 정치적인 선택에 대한 비난일수도 있지만 실제로 시드기야는 포로로 끌려간 이후에도 애굽에 뭔가 적극적인 개입을 통해 자신의 왕권을 지켜내려는 계획을 세웠지만, 오히려 이스라엘이 완전히 멸망하는데 독촉한 샘이 된것입니다.

에스겔의 지적은 시드기야의 배신으로 나라가 망했지만, 하나님은 스스로 백향목 가지 하나를 꺽어서 심어놓으면 많은 새들이 깃들 큰 나무로 성장할것이는 예언으로 이스라엘의 회복을 선언합니다. 현실적으로 말이 안되는 상황에서 나오 회복의 메시지는 그들이 겪는 고난과 어려움의 원인을 분석하고 회개를 통해 새로운 기대와 희망을 선언하고 그것을 꿈꾸는 것이 포로기에 끌려온 남은자들이 지녀야할 마음임을 에스겔이 강조합니다.

고난은 가장된 축복이라는 말이 있습니다. 어려움은 우리를 좀더 진보하게 하고, 이것을 극복하는 순간 다음에는 그런 어려움쯤은 가볍게 넘어설 수 있습니다. 성경은 계속해서 고난을 통해 새롭게 회복시키시는 하나님에 기록을 전합니다. 에스겔의 예언은 여전히 우리들의 삶에서도 비슷하게 경험되어집니다. 어려움은 우리를 해결할 방법을 찾게하고, 생각지 못한것들을 배우게 하며 그 배움은 비슷한 어려움을 가볍게 극복할 힘으로 만들어집니다.

“This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it; it will produce branches and bear fruit and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches.” (Ezekiel 17:22–23)

Last week, while testing the video system in our church sanctuary, we discovered that the TVs, which had been in the Orinda church building since before we relocated there, had all stopped working. These were pieces of equipment that had served the church for many years; we had cleaned off the accumulated dust and put them to use, but over time—due to both age and frequent use—they had finally worn out.

While checking the broken TVs, we also found that the TV in the nursery had issues with its video connection. This led us to carry out a full inspection of all the video equipment installed in the church.

In a rush, we purchased replacement TVs. When we opened the box for one of them, however, we found a crack across the monitor. After returning and exchanging it, today we are finally able to check that everything is working properly after several days of waiting.

When problems arise, we sometimes find ourselves thinking, Why now? Why at this moment? But as we work through such issues, we gain knowledge we didn’t have before and learn things we didn’t know. We might think, Do I really need to know this?—but in the end, we gain the ability to solve similar problems in the future.

In Ezekiel’s time, God declared that King Zedekiah’s breaking of his covenant with the king of Babylon and seeking help from Egypt was an act of betrayal. The result was total destruction of Israel by Babylon. While it could be viewed as a critique of a political choice, in reality, even after being taken into captivity, Zedekiah still devised plans to preserve his kingship through active Egyptian intervention. This, however, only hastened Israel’s complete downfall.

Ezekiel’s message points out that, despite the nation’s collapse due to Zedekiah’s betrayal, God Himself would take a cedar shoot, plant it, and make it grow into a great tree where many birds could nest. This prophecy declares Israel’s restoration. In a situation that seemed impossible, Ezekiel delivers a message of hope—analyzing the cause of their suffering, calling for repentance, and urging the remnant in exile to dream and hold on to a new hope.

There’s a saying that hardship can be a disguised blessing. Difficulties can move us forward, and once we overcome them, we can face similar challenges more lightly in the future. The Bible consistently testifies to a God who restores us through trials. Ezekiel’s prophecy still resonates with our lives today: hardships push us to seek solutions, teach us unexpected lessons, and that learning becomes the strength to overcome similar trials in the future.

She had asked not to make this public, but since her prayer request was posted in our church group chat yesterday, we are sharing it here. In two weeks, she will continue her rehabilitation at her child’s home.

• Please pray for Yeolin Church—that all the issues surrounding the sale of the Oakland building will be resolved and that the sale will be completed smoothly.
