나는 그들 가운데서 한 사람이라도 이 땅을 지키려고 성벽을 쌓고, 무너진 성벽의 틈에 서서, 내가 이 땅을 멸망시키지 못하게 막는 사람이 있는가 찾아 보았으나, 나는 찾지 못하였다(에스겔 22:30)

몇번의 반복적인 미팅으로 제 핸드폰에서 브로커와의 문자를 추출하려다가 실패서 결국 다른 방법을 찾기로 했습니다. 온라인으로 시카고와 샌프란시스코에서 작업을 함께했는데 결국 여의치 않아서 보내오는 키트에 제 폰을 설치해서 다시 문자를 추출하기로 했습니다.

8월30일까지 의견서를 주고받아야(상대측도 제출해야하는)하는 합의를해서 일단 지금까지 브로커에게 보낸 문자를 화면캡쳐해서 보냈습니다. 찾아보니까 브로커와 저와 둘이 나눈 문자, 그리고 저와 브로커 그리고 브로커 동업자와 나눈 문자, 마지막으로 지금 이 상황을 만든 상대측과 저와 나눈 문자가 있었습니다.

아무리 문자내용을 봐도 건물을 팔겠다고 합의한 내용을 찾을 수 없는데, 이 억지스러움을 계속 진행하고 있는 상대측에 대한 이해가 불가하다는 확신을 더 갖게되었습니다. "이해가 불가한것을 확신"을 갖는 다는 표현은 서로에게 아무 이득이 되지 않는 일을 벌였고, 여기서 우리들은 그래도 큰 도움으로 Pro-Bonon를 물질적인 희생이 없다는 것을 생각해보면 상대방은 참 바보스럽다는 것에 결론에 이르렀다는 것입니다.

누가봐도 자신이 손해인것을 포기하지 않고 고집스럽게 진행하는 것에 이해가 안되는데 꼭 세상은 우리가 이해가 되는대로만 움직이지 않는다는 것을 생각해보면, 이런 경험을 하는 이유가 무엇일까?를 깊이 생각해봐야겠습니다.

이와 비슷한 상황이 에스겔의 예언에서도 읽혀집니다. 에스겔의 예언을 보면 선지자들은 거짓 환상과 거짓 계시로 백성을 속였고, 제사장들은 율법을 왜곡하고 거룩과 속됨, 정결과 부정을 구별하지 않았으며. 방백들(지도자들)은 사나운 이리처럼 피를 흘리고 탐욕을 채우며 사람을 멸망시켰습니다. 백성들은 서로를 억압하고, 약자를 학대하며, 뇌물을 받고 정의를 무너뜨렸다고 하는데, 어떻게 어느 하나 하나님 앞에 바로 서있는 자들이 없다는 것이 신기합니다.

오랫동안 하나님과 함께했던 이스라엘은 여전히 하나님이 누구신지도 모르고 자기들 마음대로 살아가는데 힘을 쓰며 살아온것 같습니다.

이해가 불가한 이들의 행위에 대해 에스겔은 그럼에도 불구하고 하나님이 중보자를 여전히 찾으신다고 말씀하고 있습니다.

포기와 실패라는 단어는 어떤 외부적 원인이나 준비를 잘하지 못한 것의 결과로 파악할 수 있지만, 그 가운데서 여전히 다시 회복할 수 있다는 기대가 있다는 것을 잊지 말아야합니다. 은을 제련할때 불순물을 제거해야 순수한 은을 만들어내듯 하나님의 심판은 징계와 정화가 동시에 일어나는 마침내 순수한 은을 추출하듯 이스라엘을 단련하고 있다는 것이 오늘 예언의 내용입니다.

어쩌면 우리들도 불순물은 제거되어지고 순수하고 좋은 모양을 빚어내시는 하나님의 은혜가운데 있다고 볼 수 있습니다.

삶의 시련이 곧 나를 다련시켰다는 것에 대해서 어떻게 생각하세요?

“I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found no one.” (Ezekiel 22:30)

After several repeated attempts to extract the broker text messages from my phone, we failed and finally decided to try another method. We worked together online from Chicago and San Francisco, but it still didn’t work out. So, I decided to use the kit they are sending me and install my phone into it to re-extract the text messages.

Since we agreed that both sides must exchange briefs by August 30, I went ahead and captured screenshots of the messages I had sent to the broker and submitted them. Looking back, I realized that there are three sets of messages: between the broker and me, between the broker, his partner, and me, and lastly between the opposing side (who caused this whole situation) and me.

No matter how I review the content, there is nothing that indicates an agreement to sell the building. This only reinforces my conviction that what the opposing side is pursuing is unreasonable. To say “I am convinced of the incomprehensible” is to recognize that this whole effort benefits no one. When I consider that, for us, this case is being handled Pro Bono and therefore without financial sacrifice, the conclusion is that the other side is acting foolishly.

It makes no sense to stubbornly pursue something when it is clearly a loss for themselves. But reflecting on this, I realize that the world does not always move according to what seems reasonable to us. Perhaps the deeper question is: Why am I experiencing this situation?

A similar reality is reflected in Ezekiel’s prophecy. The prophets deceived the people with false visions and revelations; the priests twisted the law and failed to distinguish between what is holy and unholy, clean and unclean. The rulers were like ravenous wolves, shedding blood and destroying lives to satisfy their greed. The people oppressed one another, mistreated the weak, accepted bribes, and perverted justice. How astonishing that not one stood rightly before God!

Though Israel had been with God for so long, they still did not know who God truly was, and they lived by their own strength and will.

Yet in the midst of these incomprehensible deeds, Ezekiel declares that God still searches for an intercessor.

Words like failure and giving up may describe outcomes caused by external factors or by our own lack of preparation. But we must not forget that even within those moments, there remains hope for restoration. Just as silver must be refined in the fire so that the impurities may be removed, God’s judgment is both discipline and purification. Through it, Israel would ultimately be refined like pure silver.

In the same way, we too may understand our lives as being within the grace of God, who removes our impurities and shapes us into something pure and beautiful.
