1 John 3:11-16, Thursday, September 10, 요한일서 3:11-16, 9월10일 목요일

어제 꽤 더운 날씨였습니다. 아마 1년에 한두주 정도일텐데 다른 지역에 비해 시원한 동네라 그런지 잠을 못이룰 정도로 몰아친 더위에 하루종일 허덕 거린것 같습니다.

그 더위에 청년예배장소에 현수막을 달고, 이것저것 필요한것들을 채워가며 공간을 꾸미고 있습니다. 이것 저것 신경쓰고 일을 할때 그냥 하지 않고 한동작 한동작이 기도가 됩니다.

그렇게 한다고 뭐가 잘 될까?라는 생각이 들기도 하지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 최선을 다하고 노력하는 손길은 늘 기대하지 않은 열매와 기쁨과 감사를 경험하게 한다는 확신이 있습니다.

특별하지 않지만, 아이들을 위하 준비된 자리에서 하나님이 어떤 일을 하실지 기대합니다.

밤늦게 네팔에서 문자가 왔습니다. 긴 기도제목과 현재 네팔상황을 잘 알려주는 선교사님의 메시지였습니다. 네팔인구 6%가 이번 물난리로 이재민이 되었고, 약 5000명이 죽거나 실종상태라고 합니다. 한국인도 9명이 실종상태라고 하니 상상이 안가는 피해에 선교사님이 긴급히 기도제목을 위해 그리고 후원을 위해 문자를 보내온것입니다.

더위를 식히며 하루를 정리하면서, 우리들이 멀리 가본적 없고 그냥 듣기만 또는 작년 음악회를 통해 후원한것이 전부인 네팔을 위해 기도했습니다. 작은 기도이겠지만, 하나닝은 우리들의 기도와 손길을 통해 회복을 시작하실것이고 믿습니다.

확실하게 주어지는 것을 위해서가 아니라, 우리가 중보하고 힘을 써야하는 것을 위해 노력하면 하나님은 분명히 함께하신다는 생각이 들었습니다.

오늘 읽은 요한1서 본문은 밧모섬에서 유배를 마치고 에베소로 돌아소 요한이 쓴 편지입니다. 요한계시록과는 온도차가 있는 이 본문에서 요한은 다시한번 "우리가 서로 사랑해야한다"는 기본적인 고백과 주어진 책임을 이야기합니다. 서로 사랑이라는 무게는 단순히 문장을 넘어 그 깊이와 이해를 생각해보면 기독교인들이 누려야할 최선의 삶의 방향입니다.

요한은 여기에 가인과 아벨의 문제를 지적합니다. 아벨의 의인이라는 것, 즉 하나님이 특별히 선택하신것에 가인이 질투로 인해 죄를 지은 것이라고 하는데, 이런 가인의 모습은 우리들에게 일반적으로 드러나는 속성일수 있다는 것입니다. 내가 아닌 다른 사람이 인정받는 것에 관대하지 않은 인간의 모습.

여기서 출발한게 율법에 대한 이해로 인해 사람들이 구원받는 것에 대한 차별과 내가 하지 못하면 이 들도 하지못한다는 선택적 의로움을 이야기하는 율법주의자들에 대한 예수님의 지적이었습니다.

결국 사랑이 모자란 이들이 벌려놓은 것을 예수님이 바로 잡으셨다는 것이 요한의 고백입니다.

우리가 아픈이들을 위해 중보기도하고, 도우려고 노력하는 것은 여유가 있어서가 아니라, 우리가 배운 그리고백하는 하나님은 사랑이시다!라는 확신때문입니다. 그 사랑은 결국 우리들의 삶의 모양으로 드러납니다.

묵상

서로 사랑하라!는 말씀에 우리는 어떤 사랑과 나눔을 할 수 있을까요? 아니 어디까지 가능할까요?

중보기도

1. 네팔에서 온 기도제목은 재해의 극복이 생각보다 산이 험준하고 피해가 심각해서 쉽지 않다고 합니다. 이를 돕는 교회와 선교사들 그리고 기독교 NGO단체를 위해서 기도해주고, 재정적인 후원을 위해서도 기도해달라는 요청입니다.

2. 10월에 샌프란시스코에서 한인총회가 있습니다. 올해 50주년 한인총회를 샌프란시스코에서 하는데 차량운행을 위한 봉사자들이 필요합니다. 주저하지 마시고 기도해주시고 함께해주세요.

Yesterday was genuinely hot — the kind of heat that only comes once or twice a year in this part of the Bay, which made it all the more difficult to bear. The kind that keeps you from sleeping. I spent the day struggling through it, and in the middle of it all, I was hanging a banner at the young adult worship space, arranging things, filling in what was still missing. Small details, one movement at a time — and somewhere in the middle of all of it, each motion became a kind of prayer.

Will any of this actually matter? The thought crosses my mind. But there is a settled conviction underneath the question: when you give your best to something, even without guarantees, the fruit that comes back tends to be unexpected, and the gratitude that follows is real. This space is being prepared for the young people. What God chooses to do in it — I am genuinely curious.

Late last night, a message came in from Nepal. A missionary sending a long prayer request with an update on the situation there. Six percent of Nepal's population has been displaced by flooding. Around five thousand people are dead or missing. Nine Koreans are among the missing. It is a scale of devastation that is hard to hold in the imagination. The message was an urgent call for prayer and support.

Lying there trying to cool down at the end of a hot day, I prayed for Nepal. A small prayer, from far away, from a community that has only heard about this place — and supported it once through a concert last year. But I believe God moves through our prayers and our small offerings, and that recovery begins even there.

What moves us to intercede and to help is not surplus or comfort. It is the conviction: God is love. That confession, when it is real, takes shape in the way we actually live.

Today's passage is from the first letter of John — written after John returned from exile on Patmos to Ephesus. The temperature is very different from Revelation. Here, John comes back to the simplest thing: we are to love one another. Not as a nice idea — as a weight, a responsibility, the clearest expression of what the Christian life is meant to look like.

John brings in Cain and Abel. Cain's sin was not simply anger — it was that Abel was recognized by God, and Cain couldn't bear it. The inability to be genuinely glad when someone else is honored. That is a recognizable human pattern. And John traces it forward: that same spirit, dressed in religious language, became the selective righteousness of those who used the law to exclude — the kind of thing Jesus spent his ministry correcting. What love lacked in them, Jesus came to restore.

We pray for those who are suffering, we try to help, not because we have more than enough — but because what we confess is that God is love. And that love shows itself in the shape of our lives.

Reflection

What kind of love and sharing is actually possible when we hear the command to love one another? How far does it go?

1. The missionary in Nepal reports that recovery is harder than expected — the terrain is steep and the damage is severe. Please pray for the churches, missionaries, and Christian NGOs working there, and pray about giving financially to support the relief effort.
