2 Corinthians 13:1–4, Thursday, September 17,

"He was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power." (2 Corinthians 13:4a)
The internet has been out for a few days due to maintenance, and this morning it went down again before I could even start. Not something that happens often — and yet one thing missing turns out to make everything harder than you'd expect. I rushed to the church to send the devotional, but there are things to do before leaving the house that don't wait.
One thing I haven't skipped lately is the morning walk with the dog. As much for me as for her — a bit of movement to start the day. I've been bringing her to church occasionally, but once she goes through the overgrown areas around the property, the burrs that get caught in her fur become their own problem. Not easy to get out. So I've been hesitating.
There are problems everywhere, and every time they surface they bring their particular inconvenience — but what I notice is that I don't get used to the inconvenience. And when I ask myself whether I was always this sensitive to these kinds of disruptions, the honest answer is probably that I've already gotten so accustomed to certain things running smoothly that any interruption registers as unusual. At some point I should try a day with no internet, no phone — just what's in front of me and whatever thoughts come.
Today's letter from Paul to the Corinthians is rough. The feeling is right there on the surface. When I come again, I will not spare those who sinned earlier. The Corinthians had questioned his apostleship, dismissed his authority, and apparently said he was strong in letters but weak in person. Paul is responding to that directly.
And then verse 4: He was crucified in weakness, yet he lives by God's power. Jesus looked weak. The cross looked like the end. But that weakness was exactly where God's power showed itself most completely. Paul applies the same logic to himself — and to us.
The world runs on a different assumption. Strength is what wins. Displaying capability is what earns respect. Hide the weakness before someone uses it against you. Social media, I think, is built precisely on that instinct — show your best, project strength, curate the image. And yet what Paul keeps pointing back to is a power that came through the cross, through the thing that looked most like failure.
This morning, one missing internet connection unraveled my whole routine. That itself is a kind of revelation. The things I take for granted, the things that shape my daily rhythms without my noticing — my weakness is visible in exactly those places. What disrupts me most is probably what I've been depending on most.
Paul is asking me today: what are you actually spending your strength on?
Reflection
Weakness is not failure. It is where God's power shows up. And our weaknesses tend to be found in the very places we've grown most comfortable.
