Romans 14:13–15:2, Tuesday, September 15,

"For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit." (Romans 14:17)
Paul is talking about food. But food is not really the subject. The subject is how people who are genuinely different from one another find a way to live together inside one community. In the Roman church there were two kinds of people: those whose faith was strong enough that they felt free to eat anything, and those whose conscience led them to avoid certain foods. Both groups were in the same congregation.
Verse 13 sets the frame. Stop passing judgment on one another. The strong looking down on the weak, the weak criticizing the strong — both are problems. And then the call to go further: make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. Even when you are right, if what you do becomes a stumbling block for someone else, you need to hold back.
Verse 15 stayed with me. If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Being right is not sufficient justification for causing someone pain. And Paul gives the reason: Christ died for them. That is how much the other person is worth. The weight of what it means to wound someone Christ died for — with your own freedom, no less.
Verse 17 is the center of it all. The kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. The kingdom's substance is not rules or food practices. It is righteousness, peace, and joy — and crucially, these are things experienced in the Holy Spirit. Not manufactured by us. Given by the Spirit.
Verse 19 is concrete. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Every effort. Peace and building one another up don't happen on their own. They require work.
Chapter 15, verse 1 sharpens the direction. We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Strength is not a credential for privilege — it is a responsibility. The strong person's task is to set aside their own freedom for the sake of the weaker one. That is how community gets built.
Verse 2 brings it home. Each of us should please our neighbors for their good, to build them up. Not what pleases me — what benefits my neighbor. Not my advantage — theirs. This is how the strong person lives inside a community.
One thing that helps sustain this kind of life, I've found, is sharing meals. Food shared around a table opens people in ways that programs rarely do. A congregation that eats together finds a particular kind of warmth that carries into worship, into conversation, into care for one another. There are practical barriers — preparation takes time and energy, not everyone has the margin. But the meals that happen here create a texture of community that makes everything else more possible.
This passage is about how to live well in a pluralistic community — people with different strengths, different backgrounds, different sensitivities. Paul's answer is not to seek uniformity. It is to orient every decision around the wellbeing of the person next to you. When that orientation takes hold, rightness and freedom stop being weapons and start becoming gifts.
Reflection
Strength is not a credential. The truest strength is the willingness to set aside your own freedom for the sake of someone weaker.
Intercessory Prayer
Please pray for Yeolin Church — for the congregation, the youth, the young adults, and the children's ministry. Pray that we would grow more deeply in genuine love for one another.
Please pray for Pastor Jayoung Eom's visa process — that the Embassy interview would be scheduled and completed smoothly, and that she would arrive and begin her ministry here without difficulty.
